Chapter 42: Chapter 42
Lily was feeling awkward as she was sitting beside Emelda in front of the dining table and couldn't seem to have an appetite.
She looked at Liam, who was feeding Steve, and was clueless as to why the old lady didn't mind it.
It was not because Lily was losing her appetite because of what happened; it was because they were surrounded by many maids that were there looking at them while eating.
"Ahem!"
Emelda coughed as she was asking for attention when she noticed that Lily eventually lowered her untensils.
"Is the food not up to your liking?" Emelda asked.
"No, your grace."
Lily said, and lowered her gaze, embarrassed by what she did.
She didn't know where she was going, but she had nowhere to go, so she had no choice but to tell him this.
In a lower voice, Lily approached the lady's ear and said, "Do we have to eat with these people around us?"
"Should they come sit and eat with us?"
With that question that Lily asked, Emelda burst into laughter, and Lily did the same, but in a much more awkward way.
The lady clapped her hands twice, and all the servants bowed and even left the floor in a row.
Lily looked at Liam and thought that he wasn't really bothered about it.
Then she remembered how that scene also happened when she was at Liam's house.
"Is the temperature not right? Or did my servants really make you uncomfortable?" Emelda asked as she was looking at Lily.
"I'm sorry for the delay and for the trouble." Lily said
And Liam flinched as he was about to give Steve a spoonful of food, because he knew that Lily was referring to him as a troublemaker.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Emelda asked again, and Lily just smiled at her.
"Your face is red."
Emelda was trying to reach out to her servers to increase the house air conditioner's temperature to a colder one and that made Lily blush more and said
"I'm really sorry about the trouble, my lady."
Emelda chuckled and said, "You know, I wouldn't mind since this was the first time that I was accompanied by people other than myself and my servants."
"Thank you for accepting my offer." Emelda said and gestured for Lily to carry on with her meal.
Liam had finished accomodating Steve and decided to eat as well.
The lady didn't mind, and Lily was really embarrassed after that day that Emelda saw them in that position.
But as Lily looked at her, she saw her wringkled skin, but there was no denying her beauty, her elegance, and even her poise, even when she was older.
Lily thought that she was really lonely and that's why she was pursuing her so much.
"Oh.. and thank you as well for accepting us."
Dinner was done, and Steve was outside playing with Emelda.
Lily was looking at them, and then suddenly, the lady gestured for her to go fort and sat beside her.
Liam left for some business matters and went home, so she decided to look at them as they played in the playroom inside Lily's room.
Lily silently sat and then, without hesitation, Emelda asked, "Did something happen?"
Lily was taken aback and Emelda was restless as she was, for the first time after that long while, finally consulting something or someone as if they were her own.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry.."
"It's just your voice was a little low. That was why I was worried."
"If I overstepped my post, I apologize."
Lily looked at her and said, "No, it's not like that."
"It was just a bit too much for me to open up, since I didn't expect what had happened."
Lily scrunched her nape and looked at Emelda, who was looking at her.
"Can I ask you something, my lady?"
Lily asked as her heart throbbed so hard as soon as Emelda nodded her head.
Lily gasped a lot of air and ended up saying
"Did you keep me and my son to take responsibility for something you have never done to your own child?"
Emelda looked at her shocked, which made Lily's face red.
"Way to go, nucklehead." Lily said to herself, and she decided to take it back.
"No, I'm not..."
"I was just.. hmmm."
"How do I put this?" Emelda said
"She was so mature, but just like the others, everyone can take a difficult question to answer."
Lily thought to herself as she was looking at Emelda.
"I wanted to help someone like you because I feel like I'm helping my child."
Lily was taken aback but didn't interrupt and listen.
"I was wondering, if there was something like me by the time I cast her away, would that be great?"
"Or if someone helped them, would they forgive me for what I have done?"
Emelda took a deep breath and looked at the woman beside her.
"I didn't take you both just to burry my guilt over those years."
"I took you in because I've had enough of running away."
"What happened to her was a mystery to me that until now had no answer, but I never stopped fighting to know the truth."
"If she was trying to get home to me, if she didn't know where to go?"
"A-and if she resents me? Both of them." Emelda said, looking at Steve.
Lily found herself emotional these days, but seeing that the lady doesn't show a tear or two there, she realized that she's been through so much that she can hardly seal emotions.
Lily hugged Emelda unknowingly, and Emelda was happy.
It was like the hug of her late daughter, and Steve joined in too.
"I think I need to visit her soon. I felt her presence coming from you." Emelda said with a smile.
"I don't know what happened to you and your parents, but I'm sure they were guilty of what they have done and please don't resent him too much."
Lily smiled, but something in her mouth tasted bitterly in the most unexpected way, but she brushed it off as she did with her tears.
"One more miss?"
"Is it okay with you that the man I'm always with is always here?" Lily asked.
Emelda stood up as she was being held by her servant and she smiled.
"Why wouldn't be? He's my grandson."
"Oh okay. Thank you, Miss Me-"
Lily's eyes widened from the realization, and she said, "Grandson?!"
Lily was taken aback, and Emelda simply smiled at her and said,
"Good night, my child."
