Chapter 60: Chapter 60

“Two days,” Amèlie supplied.

“Two days?!” she exclaimed and darted a worried glance at Angel who for some reason refused to meet her eyes. “Guys, you need to listen to me and get Angel away from here! He is too close and when they find him…”

“Calm down, Nadia,” Angel spoke, interrupting her. “Nobody is coming to find me, I am safe,” Angel enunciated.

“But my uncle and Mathew! Once they find out what you did, they will come looking! Trust me! They will never stop until they find you! You need to leave me behind, and forget your vengeance against me and run. I already told you that I am sorry. It was an accident! Please!” Nadia said almost hysterically. The room grew very quiet.

“What she did to you?” Xavier repeated, turning to Angel. Angel looked everywhere but at him. Nadia’s eyes darted from Xavier to Angel, wondering what was happening.

“Maybe we should let them talk alone, Xavier,” Isabelle said, standing up from the bed to turn to the two men.

“No! He deliberately omitted to tell me this interesting part. And I want to hear it!” Xavier snapped through gritted teeth.

“Xavier—” Amèlie tried to intervene but Xavier threw her a cold glare she swallowed. Nadia began to wonder who the big guy was. He bore a resemblance to Angel that could make one think of them as brothers. But she recalled Angel did mention his family was killed and did not say anything about a brother. But she knew they must be related.

Angel raised his right hand and rubbed the back of his neck. He seemed different amongst these people and despite the anger emitting from Xavier, she could sense the affection amongst them all.

“I…” Nadia started to say but was cut short by Angel.

“She got me in trouble once or twice that’s all…” Angel said, looking directly into Nadia’s eyes. She lowered her gaze.

“I see…” Xavier said but Angel could detect he knew he was being evasive. “We will leave you two to talk then. I will be back to ask my questions in exactly one hour,” Xavier said and left. Isabelle went to hug Angel and followed him.

“Please eat, you need the strength, and take these pills afterwards. They are painkillers. It will help you feel much better,” Amèlie said, picking the tray up to place it over Nadia’s outstretched legs. Nadia nodded her thanks and watched the woman leave. Angel shut the door.

“How are you feeling?” he asked. His voice was gruff and hesitant.

“Like I was run down by a truck…”

“He is dead. He can’t hurt you or anyone else ever again…” Angel said.

“What happened back there?” Nadia asked.

“Eat, then we talk,” Angel said and went to sit on a couch placed in the corner of the room, facing the bed. When she saw the determined set of his jaw, she sighed and picked up the cutleries.

“Have you eaten?”

“Yes, they have taken care of me … thanks.”

“These are your people, your family.”

“What is left of them… Xavier and Isabelle are my cousins, first cousins,” he supplied.

“It is quite easy to see… you have the same eye colour. Isabelle and Amèlie are beautiful,” she said and sliced out of the steak. Angel merely grunted a reply. When she put the sliced beef in her mouth, the delicious taste seeped through her taste buds and almost made her moan aloud with pleasure. It tasted really good, almost as if she had never tasted anything like it. She could almost tell every spice used to cook it, it was an amazing feeling. She ate it greedily. Angel watched her studying her reactions.

When she was done, Angel said, “Take your medication.” and she did. Angel got up then to help her remove the tray and place it back on the bench then walked to the side window. Pondering on where to start.

“Why didn’t you want to tell them what I did to you?” Nadia suddenly asked, taking Angel by surprise.

“That’s private…” he said.

“If you intend to punish me by kidnapping me for it, don’t you think they ought to know so they could stop being nice and get on board with your plan?” Nadia said, sounding bitter.

“I don’t need to kidnap you to make you come with me, Nadia—”

“You choked me!”

“To stop you from screaming—”

“You caused me to faint! You hurt me!”

“Again to stop you from screaming. I needed to subdue you…”

“Io subdue me?! Listen to yourself!”

“Another alternative was to drag you along and make you watch me kill all your fucking family. Trust me that was mercy…” he blurted. Nadia gasped.

“W - what?”

“You heard me…” Angel said through gritted teeth,

“They are all dead?” her voice shook. Her eyes mirrored her horror and then guilt. “You lied to me! You told me you only wanted to escape!”

“Come on, Nadie!”

“Don’t call me that!” she yelled.

“Okay then, Nadia, do you really think they were just going to let us escape?”

“I thought…”

“You thought?! Whatever was going through your head was on you! Your family was responsible for a lot of deaths of my people. They were never going to stop! The police were never going to stop them. I had to put a stop to it – permanently!”

“So then are you going to have my father killed as well?” she asked, crying now. Her head held up in challenge.

“Is your father kidnapping and enslaving my people?” Angel asked in the chilliest voice she had ever heard.

“He is not like that!” Nadia snapped. Her lips trembled.

“Then I have no reason to want him dead as long as it stays that way.”

“You used me to kill and got your vengeance and now you stand there acting dignified!”

“Dignified! Let me walk you through what I discovered. Your little cousin, the one nobody was supposed to see, I saw him, we all did, guess what he was?” Nadia shook with fear, wondering at the outrageous crime her uncle would be accused of this time "A deformed half-wolf half-human.”

“W - what?”

“Your family is from wolfless clan lineage.”

“What is a wolfless clan?” she asked with fear.
