Chapter 74: Chapter 74
Bryan could not believe this woman he had married. What was the problem with her? She did not run off before marriage and she did not stand firm against the marriage but now after marriage, she ran off and she was now his responsibility. He felt like shaking some sense into her.
He was very disturbed by what she had revealed to him on the night of their wedding before he went off in anger considering all the previous time they had lost and all the suffering they both had gone through just because of a mere misunderstanding.
The few days he had come to see and stay with Sharon's daughter was somewhat painful as well as exhilarating. There was this connection he felt with her. She tugged at his heart. She did not have the auburn hair of her mother and neither did she inherit her green eyes. Her hair and eyes were both black like his. He had compared her to the people he knew Sharon had been close to but she did not look like any of them either.
David had both fair hair and eyes just like Gerhard and from what he had gathered, there had been no other person after Gerhard. So it could only have been him. And the timing was also just perfect for when they had spent that night in Rome.
But if she was his, why had she kept her away from him? He thought. If course to punish him. Just like she would have kept her present pregnancy from him as well if Gabriel had not thought that he should know about it.
So, if he actually wanted to know, the person to ask was Gabriel. It would seem that she does not hide anything from her cousin brother.
Before going to see Gabriel, he instructed the guards and maids that if his wife and child should come back, they should not be allowed out till he got back.
He had been very angry with the maid that helped her get away from the house.
'I'm sorry sir but she is your wife and my mistress, there was no way I could have disobeyed her'.
Bryan knew that it was not the maid's fault and after displaying his anger, he had forgiven her. He knew that the maid had thought that she was going to be relieved if her job but he was not the monster that some people thought him to be.
He arrived at the flat Sharon shared with Gabriel.
'Gabriel, do you know where Sharon is ?'
'Good day to you too, Bryan'. Gabriel said smiling, then his question sank in. 'What do you mean where Sharon is? I left Sharon in your care after the wedding and you are asking me where she is? I should be asking you how they are doing'.
Bryan knew that Gabriel who had taken it upon himself to come tell him about the pregnancy could not have known of Sharon's plans. He would not support such a move.
'My servants called me at the office to tell me that their mistress, my wife packed a box and left the house without telling anyone if them where she was going and she left with her daughter'.
'Did you have a row with her? I mean I cannot understand how she could do that after just a day after her wedding's, Gabriel said looking at Bryan accusingly.
'We just had a short discussion to clear the air and I thought that was it. This morning, I had barely got to the office when the call came and I had to rush back home'.
'Have you called her?'
'I have but she refused to come back though I threatened to turn the city upside down till I found them'.
Gabriel nodded. Sharon would do that. He picked his phone and dialled her number but it was switched off.
'Gabriel, something has been bothering me'.
'What is that?'
'There is this connection I feel towards Deborah. Tell me truthfully, whose is she? Is she mine?'
The question took Gabriel unawares and he did not know what to tell him. He did not want to lie to Bryan and neither did he want to betray his cousin's confidence. Bryan had a right to know but it was Sharon's prerogative to tell him.
'You are silent. Why? Is my intuition right then?' Bryan asked hopefully.
'Bryan, I can't tell you who Deborah's father is. Only a woman knows who the father of her baby is. Ask Sharon when you find her.She is in a right position to tell you that'.
'You mean that she never told you and it never occured to you to ask who the father of such a child is?' Bryan asked angrily.
'Bryan, please don't ask me. Ask her. She is now your wife. She can't hide anything from you anymore as a result'.
Bryan nodded because an idea had just occured to him. If there was any other person who should know it was David. Gerhard would have known as well but he was more so the person to ask was David.
He went back home considering the response he got from David. Deborah's father was only known and could be told him only by Sharon. Did that mean that he was not her father or that he was?
Being with Deborah, pulse at his heart strings and now that she was not around him, he felt bereft. Why would he feel this way except there was something more between them. He felt restless. He felt that the girl needed him.
He lay on his bed contemplating these things. He wanted David to get back from the office before he visited him because what he had to discuss with him was not something to be talked about in the office.
David had known Sharon right from the start of the pregnancy and so was in. better position to tell him what he wanted to know and he was not going anywhere until he got the answers to his questions.
