Chapter 38: Chapter 38
Days rolled into weeks and the day for the court case finally came.
All the while, Amy had been sitting in the courtroom, her shaky hands showing obvious signs of nervousness.
This was her first time being in a courtroom. She'd managed to stay out of trouble all her life, and it was sort of an achievement that she hadn't had any reason to be questioned and interrogated by a judge for something she did wrong.
The letter that was delivered to her days ago was from Cole's lawyers. They asked that they see in court today.
She could vividly remember how furious Kayla was she read the letter.
"I can't believe this! I can't believe this!! That son of a goon actually meant when he said this drama was not over!! He really wants to escalate this matter, right?!!" She yelled to no one in particular as she pranced from one end of the room to another.
She was really looking forward to following Amy to court today so she could give "that annoying prick" a piece of her mind. Unfortunately for her, her mother was sick, and she needed to go see her. So she sent a close friend of hers to represent her and follow Amy to court - Sheila, if Amy could remember.
Sheila was an upcoming TikToker - well, more like a struggling TikToker. According to Kayla she'd been doing TikToks for the past two years, and she just had a little over 200 followers. Kayla had severally advised her to grow up and look for another job, but she was adamant, saying this was her destiny.
Amy came across her videos once in a while. She just did random things and followed trends. No niche whatsoever.
Anyway, Sheila was the last person she wanted to worry about. If anything, she was a tad grateful that Kayla was not able to make it. Amy knew that if Kayla was present in this courtroom, she would've made a big scene by trying to attack Cole again.
"Court case number 023A!!" Their case number was announced, and they came forward.
"All rise!" The court clerk ordered as the elderly judge with old-fashioned glasses strolled into the room and sat at the elevated podium as everyone stood in reverence.
"This case is for the custody of Tris, son to Miss. Amy and Mr. Tris," the case was explained to the judge, and the lawyers came forward.
There wasn't enough money to get a standard lawyer, so Kayla managed to persuade her friend Rousey - who had just been called to bar, days ago - to stand in as Amy's lawyer for a small token. It was safe to say this was Rousey's first court gig.
"My Lord, if I may?" One of the lawyers from Cole's corner raised his hand, and the judge approved him.
He stood up and went forward.
"Good day, my Lord. It is with a great sadness in my heart that I bring this case before you. My Lord, my client here has been living a very peaceful and fulfilling life, until recently. About some months ago, my client just realized that he had a son in this world. He was quite surprised and almost didn't believe it, until he investigate and found out that woman had been given birth to and hid child for seven years! Seven years, your honor!!"
The judge looked to Amy's side.
"Is that true?"
Amy's judge stood up and adjusted her wig.
"That... That may be true my Lord, but that is not the point. I'm sorry to say, my Lord, but this case is baffling to say the least. In fact, it should not be held in the first place-"
"Objection, my Lord!" One of Cole's lawyers sprang up to his feet with with so much intensity, he shoved everyone in the courtroom.
"My learned colleague here is mocking and speaking ill both this court, and my client's right to seek justice in court!" He pointed out.
"Objection sustained. Please go straight to the point, lawyer Rousey," the judged replied, and Cole's lawyer sat back down in his seat with triumph written all over his face.
Amy shifted uncomfortably in her seat. Did she make the right decision taking an inexperienced lawyer to defend her?
But what choice did she have?
"My Lord, my client here has been emotionally devastated for the past week, due to the drama that my colleague's client had dragged into her life. This brave young woman got impregnated by Mr. Cole, seven years ago. Scared for what might happen to her, she searched for him, but was nowhere to be found. It looked like he'd disappeared from the face of the earth.
My client decided to ignore the shame of being ridiculed by the people for getting pregnant out of wedlock at such a young age of eighteen, and she decided to keep this baby. Way before she gave birth to the young child, she'd made up get mind to be a single mum. For seven years, she'd managed to nurture Tristan with no help whatsoever from the father. With the help of her friend, Kayla - who was not chanced to be here with us today, she groomed this boy into a fine, young child
My Lord, I begin to question myself at this point - will the court even consider to give permanent custody to Mr. Tris here, who's been absent from this boy's life all his life? Will the court give Mr. Cole the go-ahead to snatch this child away from Miss. Amy after nurturing him for seven years? My Lord, I rest my case," Rousey said and sat back down.
Cole's lawyer was about to get up to refute Rousey's notion when the judge stopped him. For reasons best known to him, he adjourned the case to three days time.
The court stood up as he left their presence in a hurry.
Just as she was about to leave, Amy's eyes locked in with Cole's dark eyes.
Amy hated the evil smirk on his face, but she was even more scared of it. What was he up to? What plan did he have to avert this case to his favor?
