Chapter 74: Chapter 74

Matt sighed as he buried his head in his palms.

God! When will this end?

He had accompanied Katya to the northern border along with a dozen of his warriors. She wanted to cast a spell there to determine how Charlotte ended up here. It was going perfectly for a few minutes. She seemed at ease and normal. They didn’t see any danger. Everything was going fine until…

Until she started gasping for air and clutching her neck wildly.

Matt had no idea what was happening. He tried to help her but the circle around her prevented him from entering and breaking the spell. It would burn him to ashes if he tried to break the protective shield cast by the circle. He had no idea what to do, so he just mindlinked his Alpha about the situation and he ordered him to wash away the circle with water. Matt did as he was told and it worked!

As soon as Matt poured water on the circle, it washed away and he was able to help Katya but by then she had lost consciousness. His warriors helped him carry her to the medical wing where she was lying in a bed and matt was sitting outside her room on a chair. She was fine but extremely weak.

Matt and Katya have a weird love-hate relationship. Years ago, when Ayleen needed help, Alpha Azraiel contacted Katya and she agreed to help out of her mother’s loyalty to their pack. During that time, Matt and Katya grew close, so much so that he thought he was falling in love. Actually, he was already in love with her. She was smart, beautiful, calm, and extremely kind. He was afraid that he would be so deep in love with her that he would almost die when he would find his mate. Afraid that he would hurt both Katya and his future mate by being close to Katya, he distanced himself. He knew it hurt her. Hell, it hurt him too. But, it was necessary. He kept his distance from her, even when she suggested that they stay friends, probably guessing the reasons herself. But he knew, he knew that he could never be just friends with her. Over the years, the yearning to be with her diminished. He focused on his Beta duties so as to not let his mind wander to the sweet memories he shared with her. It didn’t help that he hasn’t found his mate yet. Once he refused to be friends, Katya resigned. She kept her distance from not only him but the entire pack. He would talk to her only in the capacity of Beta and never as Matta and she would treat him the same.

But today, when he saw her gasping for air, he felt she’d die and that he’d never be able to live if that happened.

All the memories and feelings he had buried years ago just came back flooding in. He knew she did that to help Charlotte but honestly, he didn’t see the point of risking her life in danger for someone she has just met.

To be honest, he hasn’t been able to trust Charlotte completely ever since he knew that she lied to the Alpha about the whole ordeal. He knows she did that out of fear but the fact that she was able to lie so calmly while surrounded by so many werewolves just scares the shit of him. Just what the hell is she capable of?

He didn’t want to trust her, nor help her but his wolf couldn’t stand it. He wanted Matt to submit before his Luna. It has now come to the point where his wolf was almost threatening him to submit or else he would stop showing up and it was fucking with his mind.

They were taught to cooperate and coordinate with the wolf but never how to handle the disagreements. His wolf trusted her blindly and he on the other hand was very cautious of her, especially considering the recent events that took place. If she was able to hurt Katya, a strong witch then what’s to say that she wouldn’t hurt others? They have elders and children in this place, who wouldn’t be able to defend themselves if they have no idea what they are saving themselves from. Hell, no one has any idea what they are dealing with right now!

He stood up immediately as he heard the footsteps. Alpha is here.

“How is she?” He asked as soon as he spotted him.

“She’ll be fine. Her energy levels are low and her body is a bit weak. Dr. Humphrey says she’ll be fine by tomorrow.” He replies.

Alpha Azraiel nods at him, his face was grim and worried.

“This is the reason why I didn’t want her to use magic in the first place!” He says with a clenched jaw.

Matt nods, his Alpha is right. He has never supported the use of magic, only using it to secure borders and territory and never diving into dangerous spells. He didn’t want to agree to it but somehow, Katya and Theo convinced him, most probably by playing with his feelings for his mate, which was understandable honestly. Matt would have put anyone’s life on line for his mate. He knew it was hypocritical of him to think so while being unwilling to endanger other lives for Charlotte, but he also knew that Charlotte wasn’t just normal.

“Stay right here Matt. Let me know when she wakes up. I’m going to secure the borders more in case the magic did any damage. We don’t know what caused this to happen but it surely is fucking dangerous.” His Alpha instructs and Matt nods his head.

As he watches his Alpha leaving, one thought enters his mind and his wolf berates him for thinking like that.

Does Alpha Azraiel really believe that his mate is not dangerous? He mustn’t, right? Or else, he would have mated with her and declared her the Luna by now!

Maybe he is not as blindsided by the mate bond as everyone thinks!

***************

Charlotte sits on her bed, or rather their bed in Azraiel’s room, and flips through the journal. Ayleen just told her what happened with Katya and she couldn’t help but feel responsible for causing this. God! She is a terrible person. First, she caused a nosebleed and now, Katya passed out because she was trying to help her.

What the hell do you want? She screams in her head as if the beings that are supposedly in her would reply.

Azraiel too called her to let her know that Katya is safe right now and would be fine by tomorrow. He also suggested that she review everything she has told them till now to see if she missed out on something. Katya fainted in the middle of performing a spell to determine what happened on the day they found her. So here she is flipping through the pages of her journal in which she has written about that day, the nightmares that followed, and everything that she felt during the past month.

She hates that she is hurting people who are trying to help her.

Maybe, it’d be better if I just don’t complete the shift.

Don’t say that. Her wolf immediately scolds her.

She ignores the pang in her chest and starts reading her journal from the start. As she slowly goes through the pages in which she has described the events of that day, the memories rush back. That day would forever be engrained in her mind. The way she ran away from Richard, how those wolves came in to protect her when she thought they were going to hurt her, and…

And how Richard turned into a wolf.

A horrified expression covered her face as soon as a detail clicked in her mind. Something that she ignored or rather forgot!

Oh, God!

No!

Richard turned into a wolf!

But not just any wolf.

Richard turned into a WHITE WOLF!!

Theo’s words echo in her mind as a piece of bad news.

“Only Truebloods have white wolfs….”
