Chapter 145: Chapter 145
Charlotte woke up to an empty bed. Immediately, she mindlinked Azraiel to confirm if he was at the packhouse and yes he was.
She felt like she needed a coffee so she brewed one cup for herself and slowly sipped on it while looking at the woods from the balcony in her room. There were warriors stationed all around her house and she knew it was Azraiel’s doing. She was fine with it.
The moment she woke up from her sleep, she has been thinking hard about only one thing. The whole ordeal with Theo left her confused and conflicted. She doesn’t want to hurt Azraiel but she also has no control over Theo’s decision.
Theo is Azraiel’s best friend and Gamma, so how can he be her Beta? Why did she feel that connection with Theo when all along she felt like Nicholas was her Beta? She has a lot of questions but no answers. Worst of all, she doesn’t feel bad about Theo being her Beta. She has always felt at ease around him, almost as if he was her brother. He cheered her up when she felt down, he was always there for her when she needed someone other than her mate. She always felt the closest to him among the others. Yet, she never expected this to happen. This would change a lot of things. The whole hierarchy of ranks in The Blue Orchid pack would be disrupted.
She is pretty sure that Azraiel is already working on how to cope with this mess.
As far as her shift is concerned, she doesn’t remember it at all. Yup, not one bit. The last thing she remembers is being in extreme pain as Azraiel carried her out of the packhouse. After that, it is a blur of various shapeless faces and voices that didn’t sound human.
She feels powerful though. Her vision has cleared and she can now see farther than before. Her hearing has definitely improved, though she would need to learn how to block all the noises. There are also subtle changes in her physical appearance. All in all, this shifted definitely changed her.
Along with the changes in her physical attributes, there is a strong sense of duty and motherhood flowing through her veins that was absent before. It could be both due to being the Alpha of the supernaturals as well as the Luna of the Blue Orchid pack. Ever since she became aware of being the Luna, she always wondered if she could be a good Luna to the pack. Today, she KNOWS she will be a good Luna and an Alpha.
Her wolf agrees with her.
Of course, then there’s her wolf. She has left no stone unturned in making her presence known. From, commenting on her every thought to pushing her to be near Azraiel, from always looking out for danger to planning what to do next, she has been hyperactive after the shift. However, her wolf isn’t the only being residing inside her.
She is completely aware of it now. She doesn’t know what happened during the shift or if it actually is a being inside her or just a feeling. But she can definitely feel something heavy weighing on her chest and mind, waiting to be unleashed.
Good thing, she has no idea how to unleash it.
Bad thing, she has no idea how to control it either.
She doesn’t know what she is capable of and that’s the single most fact she is most afraid of. She could be overestimating her powers but for some reason the darkness inside her scares her to no end.
Blinking away the fear, she finishes her coffee and goes inside.
“Charlotte?” Azraiel mindlinks her.
“Yeah?” She smiles involuntarily.
“How do you feel?”
“Good.” She breathes.
“Great. Can you come to the packhouse?” The seriousness in his voice troubles her.
“Yes, I’m coming.”
“Thank you.” He sends her the feeling of relief to soothe her worries.
She does the same.
She quickly changes her clothes leaves for the packhouse. When she enters Azraiel’s office, Theo and Katya are already there.
Katya bows her head and Theo does the same, except he mutters ‘Alpha’ under his breath.
She acknowledges them with a nod and turn to Azraiel. His face reveals nothing of the turmoil inside his head.
He asks her to sit and then picks up the bag in front of him and hands it over to her.
Along with a brown bag there is an envelope too.
“Arthur dropped these outside the woods.” Charlotte’s mouth drops open.
“Wh-when?” She stutters.
“About an hour ago.” He says without any indication as to why.
“It not just that.” He stands up and comes around the desk to sit beside her. “After Arthur dropped them, Austin Jones came in looking after the same things in the exact same spot.”
Charlotte’s brows furrow in confusion.
“What’s in it?” She asks, looking at Katya and Theo.
“We haven’t checked it yet, but there’s nothing dangerous in it right now. I’ve checked.” Katya says.
“Right now?” Charlotte asks.
“Yeah…it could be dangerous in the meantime, but whatever it is, it’s not activated.”
She nods in understanding.
“I think they belong to you, so I wanted you to be the first one to open them.” Azraiel says looking at her tenderly.
She nods and says a Thank you and love you through the mindlink.
Taking a deep breath, she opens the envelope first.
It’s a letter from her uncle, Arthur. Her face becomes expressionless as she reads the letter.
After reading the letter again and again for a minutes, she keeps it aside and opens the bag.
The first thing that she takes out is a lilac satin fabric. When she holds it up, it looks torn and burnt from all sides. It’s soaked in red. Her nose twitches as she smells the blood. She keeps it on the table in front of her and takes out the next thing.
A book.
A huge thick book with more than 800 pages. It has a dark brown hardcover with golden edges. She opens the book only to look at letters and symbols that doesn’t make any sense to her. Pursing her lips, she keeps it aside too.
The next thing to come out from the bag is a small wooden rectangle box. The wood is a rich mahogany color with golden flowers embedded on the lid. In the center in a rectangle, there is a name. With shaking hands, she opens the box. She pulls out two things from that box.
An oval moonstone pendant encased in a metal that suspiciously looks like silver, hanging from a golden chain.
The next thing is a red silk pouch with drawstrings. Charlotte opens the pouch while she can feel three set of eyes on her.
The moment she opens that pouch, everyone in the room freezes. Theo stands up to get away from her while Azraiel screams “Charlotte” and snatches that pouch away from her and throws it on the floor. The contents of the pouch scatter on the floor. It all happens quickly in a few seconds. Charlotte is too stunned to react to what just happened.
Katya immediately kneels to check the content. A worried expression takes over her face.
Charlotte gulps and looks at Theo’s terrified face and Azraiel’s scared one.
“What is it?” Charlotte asks Katya as she stands up, grat
eful for Azraiel’s arms around her.
Katya looks at Azraiel and then at Charlotte.
“It-It’s Wolfsbane.”
