Chapter 372: Chapter 372
Ava, whose back had been to the bed, stilled for a moment. The bright room reflected all her emotions on her face.
’What the hell did he say? Wasn’t he unconscious? How am I to explain this?’ thoughts ran through her head as she was unsure of how to act. It took a brief moment for her to compose her features and then turned to Rocky, lips curled up and smiling genuinely wide. Only she knew how shocked and worried she had been with Rocky’s wellbeing. She decided to go with the emotions that she was most confident in.
"OMG! Rocky! You’re finally awake! You scared me!"
Ava exclaimed emotionally with unconscious tears that even surprised her. This small action re-emphasized how much she cared for him. On the other hand, one could see that she was nervous as hell. She brushed her short hair back.
"You have no idea how worried I was! How are you?"
She sat by him on the bed and placed her cool hands on his forehead, feeling him still slightly warm. Rocky was drenched in his own sweat.
"Come on, let’s get you out of these clothes and into the bath before you get a cold." Ava was adept with taking care of people so these instructions came easily to her.
"Ava?" Rocky stopped her but that only got her frustrated,
"Rocky! How can you have no self-awareness like that? How could you let yourself be drugged? Tonight, of all nights? What if it had been poison and not – not that? I-"
The tears that had pooled in her eyes overflowed, shocking Rocky briefly.
Rocky struggled to sit up, looking at Ava rumbling through those emotions. He reached out and helped her clean the tears. A few moments after the tears had subsided, Ava was still rumbling on, and Rocky’s mind was torn between her distress and what he thought that he had seen.
He knew Ava enough that he was nervous and upset at the same time. Rocky was still slightly groggy, and his body felt unusually warm. However, what he was not sure of was what he had seen. After Ava had calmed down, his mind revisited that topic. His were telling him one thing and his logical mind was telling him another.
’How is that possible?’
Groggy but firm, he held Ava’s arms,
"I s-aw it. Do-n’t pret-end that I didn’t, Ava. What... what was that?"
He looked freshly awake, hair messy but still slightly alert. He locked eyes with Ava, trying to search for answers. Ava sighed, wondering how stubborn his mind was to revisit the topic that she had thought that she had successfully circumvented.
"Rocky, what are you talking about? You’ve been out, cold for a whil-"
"I saw Murray just disappear from this room, Ava. You were facing him and there was no way that you had not seen that."
Ava frowned and then touched to feel Rocky’s head again. Her touch was gentle, so much so that Rocky briefly closed his eyes, savouring the slight coolness of her touch. By doing this, he missed the startled expression that briefly crossed Ava’s face. She quickly composed herself,
’Couldn’t Murray have walked out on his two legs? Why did he have to leave me with this mess?’ Ava mused, nothing showing on her face. Instead, she asked, worriedly,
"It looked like you were hit harder than I thought. Maybe a concussion could cause hallucinations. Do we need to go to the hospital?" she murmured, as if to herself but just loud enough for Rocky to hear. Then she pressed his temple lightly as If feeling for bumps,
"Does it hurt? Maybe I should call someon-"
"Ava?" Rocky pressed her hands from his forehead and the action took more of his strength than he had thought.
"I know what I saw, Ava-"
"Are you sure you’re not dreaming, Rocky? Maybe you’ve been watching too many late-night movies-"
"You’re deflecting, Ava. Why won’t you admit to it?" He said, as his voice took on a weak edge,
Ava steeled her face; It looked like the perfect calm mask for a girl who had just shed tears. She tried to compose her features as much as possible. She took Rocky’s hands in hers. With a voice as steady and pleasant as could be, yet beneath the surface, an invisible storm rages. A complicated argument raged on inside her, threatening to break through the calm mask. Her thoughts were that desperate.
’Don’t let him see. Stay still and think of something! How do I even explain this? I can’t do that... I- No one would ever understand and the last thing we need now is this....’
"What did you see, Rocky?"
"I- I saw.... It was out worldly... I mean... it sounds impossible, but it was real.... I saw it with my own eyes, I-"
The more he talked, the more his voice dropped. With each passing second, he felt unsure of himself.
Ava sighed, seeing some hope.
"You really need to rest, Rocky. What supernatural things could you see in here? There is no TV here. You’re as stubborn as Shelby is. She reached out and started unbuttoning his shirt but did not meet his eyes,"
"You’re hiding something-"
Ava stilled and sighed,
"Whatever you think you saw is beside the point, Rocky. You were drugged bad and-"
At the thought of that, Rocky’s mind finally went back to the evening’s proceedings.
He blanched and Ava sagged in relief,
’I’m sorry I have to lie, Rocky... I swear that this will be the only time I ever do this with you.’ She thought to herself as Rocky quickly looked down, relief washing over him at the fact that he was fully clothed.
"- Murray literality saved you. He knocked you out and the-"
She stopped her actions,
"You have no idea what ... It has been a draining evening, Rocky, so please..."
"Ava, what happened in the garden? What did I do? Did sissy come there? I thought that I heard her voice!"
Ava nodded, partly glad that he had dropped the issue and also with a complicated look. She helped Rocky lean back against the headboard as she could see a light sheen of sweat start to form on his forehead. She helped him take off his shirt. She started wiping his upper body with a dry small hand towel.
Ava nodded and then recounted all that had happened to Rocky. He gasped. His strength was all but zapped, so he allowed Ava to continue wiping him.
Ava nodded again, then stopped, looking him again in the eyes,
"I don’t think that she is happy with me... I mean us being together...."
Ava whispered while avoiding looking at Rocky directly. Looking at her, Rocky knew that he was being silly with the questions he had been asking. It was possible that he had seen wrongly, besides, there were more pressing issues that his girlfriend was dealing with and he had been a fool to talk about unnecessary things.
"Ava, my dear, look at me..."
Ava finally raised her head to look at him,
"You know sissy more than that. Something else might be going on...."
It broke his heart to see his confident Ava reduced to that, but that told Rocky of how much Shelby’s acceptance meant to Ava.
Rocky pulled Ava closer to his chest, "I know sissy more than anything. She might be sad and upset at being blindsided, but never angry at us,"
He rubbed Ava’s back fondly and she relaxed against him, "Bu-"
"Don’t worry, Ava. From what you said about even Brother Ian’s reaction, there is definitely more to this than meets the eye. You wait and see. Besides, even if this was the case, we would convince her together. What better sister-in-law can she want than her best friend?"
Ava lightly tapped his chest,
"I never said that I will marry you!"
"It’s only a matter of when, Ava, not ’if’!"
Ava shook her head and let the subject go.
"I know deep down that something else is up with sissy, but brother Ian around, there is nothing that we have to do at this time,"
Ava nodded and then stretched up. She left his side and came back with another bowl of warm water.
"Is this your room, here?"
She nodded and continued wiping him, as he complimented the place. Then he suddenly asked,
"What of that girl? I never knew that she would stoop that low... I am terribly disappointed. Girls of nowadays are brave!"
Ava chuckled, "More than you?"
She asked as she helped Rocky turn over and wipe his back as well.
"With this level of treatment, I should get drugged more oft- Ouch! Ava!"
Ava stopped and hit him hard on the back,
"You want to get drugged? I’ll do that for you then!"
Ava shook her head, sighing. With his reactions, it seemed like he was okay. The medicine that Murray had given him sure was strong.
"She was handled by Suzie. I don’t think that you have to worry about her or her father again-"
"You mean, the principal was in on this too?"
"Unfortunately, yes!"
"What the hell! Brother Ian is decisive!"
Ian was indeed decisive and if not for him, Ava was unsure of what she would have done to that stupid girl, who had tried to stab her. She was lucky that Suzie had intervened. Suzie had saved her life and Ava was immensely appreciative.
Ava snuggled close to him after the wipe and then waited for his smooth breathing. Murray had told her that Rocky needed to sleep off the rest of the drug’s effects.
She sat up and looked at him, eyes, softening. Ava placed a kiss on his forehead and then walked out of the room.
"Time for cleanup." She muttered to herself, eyes hardening as she hurried along the hallway to one place where she knew she would find Suzie and she was there indeed.
