Chapter 262: Chapter 262

One moment, Ian felt some shame. Shame that everything pointed out was true. Then, even though he was feeling weak to the point of being sick, he felt himself weaken more. Strength poured out of his body, and he let go and sank into oblivion ... and then, there was nothingness.

’Where am I?’ Ian asked himself as he walked through a dark space. He could not see where he was and even the outline of anything. Ian walked until he felt like his legs would drop off his person.

There was no end in sight, and he had no sense of direction as he could not even make out anything in that darkness. Each step he took weighed on him. It was as if he was taking a strenuous exercise. He could not even feel his body. It was like he was floating, yet he was not.

The weight increased until Ian could barely take another step. His legs shook visibly and sweat poured off his person. His heart raced with the effort, and for once, Ian felt he had no control over anything. This was like his dreams when he had locked himself up. It was mainly the one he could not remember.

This felt like something he had experienced before yet could not remember. Suddenly, soft whispers surrounded him, but Ian could not distinguish what they were saying or if it was one or multiple persons, adding to the mounting frustration. Nothing made sense one bit.

Half of the medical personnel in the hospital room were fully engaged on Shelby at that same time. They knew that they could absolutely not lose her.

Another bed had been pushed into the room at a point, and Ian was on that one, fully unconscious. While one team tried to revive Shelby, the others tried to stabilize Ian, whose heart rate was beating in an overdrive. They were scared that his heart would stop. nothing

"Give her 50cc’s of ...."

Orders were barked across the room. Just when they thought that all hope was lost, the deafening signal of ’beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!’ from Shelby turned to ’beep, beep, beep, beep!!!!’

Without wasting time, they went through other processes to try and stabilize her. It was at this same time that Ian’s erratic heartbeat started slowing down and back to normal.

A few minutes later, one of the doctors took off his gloves and stepped out of the room, wiping his forehead with his hands.

"They are both out of the critical state. The missus will be monitored for the next forty-eight hours because...."

Alex almost sagged in relief and did not listen to the doctor’s words afterwards. All Alex cared about was that they were okay!

"We must monitor Chairman Ian too.... We think that it might have been stress and fatigue that...."

Alex and the rest felt their hearts calm down. Even they found it strange that Ian went into that state because of what the doctor had said. They were in no mood to ask the whys and hows.

"We’ll move the chairman to another room so that-"

"There’s no need for that. We are sure that he will prefer to stay with his wife so leave him as is."

The head nurse stepped in then and added, "It’ll be done as you wish, Chairman and Mrs. Thornston,"

She tugged on the doctor, and they stepped away.

"Learn to read the room! You are working in the VIP ward! Not just some random place! The interests and desires of patients are and will always be strictly adhered to!" The head nurse snapped and then walked briskly away.

She was emotionally spent, and her muscles were tensed. For a moment, she had thought that they would lose them. The head nurse had no luxury of time. As she oversaw the whole VIP unit, she knew she had work on her hands. She had to deal with the two medical staff who had been thrown out of the room earlier.

Pinching the bridge of her nose, she frowned, "I don’t know why I keep getting these imbeciles on my staff!"

At the nurses’ station, she bumped into two cops, unsurprisingly.

"Hello, we are detectives and here to ...." She did not let them land as she knew they had a criminal case on hand. She had no idea who

"Oh, yes, welcome detectives."

"I’ll take it from here...." She dismissed the initial receptionist who had greeted them.

"You can’t get much out of the patient as she is still unconscious."

"It’s okay. Can we look at the medical chart to understand the state that she was in when she arrived?"

"We already have the necessary paperwork," They interjected when they noticed her hesitation.

"You over there, please see to these detectives."

The receptionist, who had been dismissed, came back and then led the detectives off. The head nurse entered a room, knowing perfectly well that she had dismissed the two medical personnel in her mind even before meeting them.

Back at the doorway, the remaining nurses and the two doctors came out one after the other. Geneva could not contain her elation at the thought that the two most important people in her life were alive.

"How could he work himself to this point?" She lamented as she was finally granted access to the room. Geneva went straight to her son’s side, but she just turned her head and used the path between the beds to see Ian and Shelby.

They had positioned Ian’s bed beside Shelby’s and left enough space for one chair.

Geneva took Ian’s hands in hers, gently pulled Shelby’s, and added them. Holding both their hands, Geneva’s heart clenched really hard.

"We nearly lost them both in one day. How cruel can the heavens be?"

She turned her tired eyes to look at Shelby’s pale lips and face, "Thank you for hanging on, little one."

Alex stood at the foot of Ian’s bed and studied his son quietly. No one knew what was happening in his head as he stared for a while and then released a long sigh.

Rocky was not in any good shape. Almost all the fight went away from him. He did not rush into the room like he had done earlier. His phone also kept buzzing, but Rocky ignored it.

He leaned against Ava, not taking the chance to let her go from him. Ava knew precisely what he was doing, but just let him be. From time to time, Ava would cast glances at Currey. With Murray not around, she was unsure that Currey would keep his end of the bargain.

The last thing that Ava wanted was to be stabbed in the back or have her neck twisted when no one was around. For some strange reason, she had felt better with Murray around than otherwise.

Ava cast a wary glance at Currey and then led Rocky back into the hospital room. They both went over to Shelby’s side and stood silently over her. She was still connected to the oxygen tank and a few more tubes. Rocky studied the numbers of the machines hooked to Shelby, and a breath of relief left him.

’She is going to be okay!’

Rocky cast his eyes over at Ian, and he started feeling a little guilty about his rashness. He knew that he could have handled it a lot better than he did, but given the chance, Rocky was not sure that he would react differently. His sister was his life, and Rocky would never tolerate such actions towards her!

A light knock sounded.

"The patients will need to rest...." A new nurse informed them, and they all reluctantly filed out. This time, they all went into the VVIP lounge.

Brad had not stepped foot into the room. He remained by Currey’s side as if trying to be the first to get the news on what had happened.

The lounge was quiet, and the only sounds were from Currey’s laptop keys.

"Let me go!" A shrill female voice disturbed the calmness in there, making Rocky as well as Ava snap their heads in that direction. This was because they recognized the voice.

It had taken Murray just about half an hour to get Clara and return!. This was impossible unless he was driving over 250 miles per hour, but he somehow did it. Alex and Geneva were not about to question how he achieved that feat because they were as pissed off as they could be.

"Let go of me! Do you know who I am?!"

Murray threw Clara into the room, and the older woman slumped down hard.

"What is the meaning of this?!" She snapped.

"It’s nice of you to join us. Care for some tea?" Geneva asked politely.

"Gen-eva... I mean, Mrs... Th-ornston... I...."

"What happened to us knowing who you are?" Geneva asked calmly and took another sip of her tea.

"So, dear Clara Wendover, I hear Shelby called you this evening...."

"You mean that ungrateful bitch? I-"

"Now, we don’t want to use such foul language here." Geneva chided while the rest of the room shook their head in disappointment.

"Your daughter has been hospitalized at the moment, and that is why we are all here..." For a moment, Clara frowned, remembering that Shelby had asked for help on their call. It was so short that most did not catch it. If anyone, Geneva was a mother as well and she did not understand Clara’s logic because she said,

"Oh, leave her be! It’s probably a ploy for attention. You should not let Shelby lead you by the nose...."

"It’s so annoying that I cannot get someone to do this for me." Geneva set her teacup down and stood up, effectively cutting Clara off. No one saw it coming as Geneva adjusted her ring so that the jewels were facing her palm. With no hesitation, Geneva gave a resounding slap to Clara .... PAAA!!!
