Chapter 259: Chapter 259

Rocky, who had been about to chunk down another mouthful of beer paused and then turned his slightly glazed eyes to Nicholas. Rocky said nothing but Nicholas understood the look.

Rocky was hurting inside, and those seemingly harmless words of advice seemed to have given him some hope and something to cling to.

Sighing, and with a very serious look, Nicholas repeated, "Trust me on this, Rocky. We have seen your devotion to sister Ava..."

’Devotion is an understatement though. Rocky would die for her in a heartbeat if the situation ever presented itself!’ Matt thought, knowing perfectly well that his thoughts should remain as they were. That wasn’t the time for him to inject that into the conversation.

"...It will push through with time. You cannot start being all downtrodden about that now. Show her that you are the reliable person that we know you are." Nicholas continued and then suddenly, "But sister Ava is something, yh? Even with the presence of all this money, she never budged?"

"That is what puzzles me." Matt whispered.

Rocky’s sudden wealth was no longer a secret and had somehow become known to many people. This had put him on an even higher pedestal than he was with the ladies, but Rocky was steadfast in his love, as was Ava steadfast in rejecting him.

"She looks to be the real deal. If sister Ava had done a turn-around after the money, then I would have lost my respect for her." Matt added. At this point, neither Rocky nor Nicholas said anything, but Rocky knew in his guts that Ava would never have done that. From the start to the end, he had never had any qualms about it. He was just frustrated that he was younger than Ava. This was because, from Rocky’s point of view, his future wife was very dependable.

"Why wasn’t I born earlier? Then there wouldn’t have been a problem!" Rocky mumbled out in more frustration.

"No one controls when they are born, Rocky...." Nicholas said and patted his shoulders.

"Now, let’s drink to Rocky and his future wife, sister Ava!"

Matt and Nicholas poured glasses of vodka, clinked them, and downed their contents. They wisely kept Rocky out of this and just got him another bottle of beer. The beers were already too much for Rocky, and they did not want him to overdo it.

Rocky slowed down the drinking as his eyes started to droop. However, even in a state like that, he was seriously thinking of Nicholas’s words.

His phone was still in his hand, and he played with it, still convincing himself that it was not a wise idea to call Ava in his state.

Rocky pressed the call button.

"Hey, Rocky! You can’t call her in that state-"

Nicholas and Matt got startled out of their wits when they thought that Rocky was calling Ava, but then,

They both let out an exaggerated sigh of relief. ’He didn’t call her!’

"How did things go today? How is mum’s state?"

With the weight of the home on his shoulders, Rocky found himself visiting home often to make sure that all was going as he wanted. Rocky had wanted to let Shelby do this, but Shelby declined.

She had said that Rocky should try his hands at such management skills because she was married to a new home. This did not mean that Shelby never cared for the family. She just wanted to make Rocky take the lead while she took the backseat because she had never really felt that she was part of the Wendover family.

Shelby saw no need to assume that role after James Wendover had passed. She oversaw any finances and others when needed, but she let Rocky do whatever he wanted to do on that front, too, when it came to matters of their old home.

When Rocky could not go back home, he placed calls to especially Angela, Clara’s maid for a status update of all things.

"Errrmmmm.... Madam Clara did.... Then she called ...."

Without leaving anything out, Angela explained things in detail. From experience, Angela had seen the changes that had taken place in Rocky after his father’s demise and the changes in the family. Angela preferred not to cross Rocky in any way. She understood the ranks very well.

Rocky clenched his hands. His alcohol-induced state cleared a bit.

’What is wrong with mum? Why does she keep doing this? I am trying with all of my strength to ensure she gets the best of the best. Even sis is doing the same, but it’s like she is another person in the shell of our mother. How can she say those words? Really? How can a mother say these?’

Even the other two in the room sensed his anger soaring by each second.

’What exactly could have happened?’ Matt and Nicholas shared a look. They could barely make out Angela’s voice and could not hear the specifics. However, as Rocky’s close friends, they could deduce that Clara Wendover was at it again.

They shrugged at each other and sighed. With a mother like that, would there be any calm day? Ever?

Rocky clenched his chest as his anger soared to unbearable levels.

’Mum is a lost cause! What can we possibly do now? Why does sis always take on such BS?’

"From this point on, all allowances and monies that I have been sending weekly to her will cease! Brother Ian already wanted her to work, but I turned a blind eye to it even after all those elaborate talks that day. Let her know that from tomorrow onwards, she has to report to the shop starting tomorrow.

She does not seem like someone who is grieving and should be given time off. The only funds that you, Clara, will receive will be just enough for household expenses, and that will be coming to you, Angela. If anyone dares go against this and gives Mum anything other than the bare minimum meals, YOU WILL BE FIRED! Do I make myself clear?!"

There was a moment of silence before Rocky added,

Rocky hung up and nearly threw the phone away, except that it rang just right then.

"WHAT?!" He screamed into the phone without checking the caller ID.

Rocky blanched after hearing the voice.

This name made Matt and Nicholas sit up.

"Ava?" They said in unison, face-palming themselves.

Rocky jumped from the seat in joy, staggering and holding onto the nearest wall to stabilize himself. ’Ava called me! Yay! Finally!’

Just as soon as he did this, he froze as if he just remembered what he had done, ’Oh no! I shouted at her....’

"I’m sorry Ava dear, It was not directed at you. It’s just mum that is- I- I mea-n.... I’m sorry. I would ne-ve-"

He nervously stuttered.

"Rocky!" She snapped to get his attention.

Rocky stopped talking immediately. He twisted his hands nervously, waiting for the worst but then, the words that Ava said to him made Rocky’s heart drop like a dead log. He even forgot what he had said to Ava and his whole body went cold.

He asked quietly, "W-here?"

That was all Matt and Nicholas heard before Rocky dashed out of the room at the speed of light.

They shouted at his actions, but Rocky was long gone.

Flagging down the first taxi he got, which was instantaneous given the part of town he was in, Rocky took almost an hour to get to the hospital, where his sister had been admitted for the second time. The time it had taken him to get there did nothing for his state of mind at all. He was still as angry as he had been when he left that club that night, if not even more.

Rocky dashed through the OPD and then up the elevators to the VVIP wards. His eyes glinted with fury overflowing so much that any healthy person who tried to approach him rescinded their decision.

"Where is she?!" He boomed as soon as he saw familiar faces around one particular door, even though he was a little distance away.

"Master Rockwell, Welcom-"

"WHERE IS SHE?!" Rocky demanded again. The question was directed at all but at no one simultaneously. Before anyone could answer, Rocky stormed past them and pushed the door open. They had not expected him to do that.

The sight that greeted Rocky was enough for his whole world to fall apart. First, it was the sombre faces of those outside, but the one from inside made something tick inside him. Rocky stopped in his tracks, and tears ran down his face. His heart clenched and broke into pieces.

He turned to see a helpless and miserable-looking Ian in the room and that was his final straw. That was the first time that Roky had seen his brother-in-law that way, but it did nothing to appease him .... Not one bit.

"You couldn’t even protect her! What was all that talk about?" Rocky gritted out angrily.

He grabbed a fistful of Ian’s top and shoved the tall giant, making him stumble. It was as if all the strength in Ian had been drained off.

"Why is my sister getting in so much of a mortal danger after meeting you? You promised to talk care of her! WHY COULDN’T YOU KEEP THAT PROMISE!"

Thank you so much to all for your votes and comments! I hope we can keep it up ^_^
