What had bewildered the poor hearts of these maids that day was Brianna’s reaction after that they had exited the room.
Peeking back into the room, they saw Brianna pick up her phone and smile at the screen. It was an eerie smile. This heightened their urge and need for survival instincts. It told them more than one thing, but they concluded that Brianna was probably a psychopath.
At that time, the two knew one thing: Whatever had happened to that colleague maid was something ordered by their mistress, or even worse, it brought Brianna delight.
It was as sadist as it got, but they subconsciously decided not to cross their mistress if they could. That was the day they understood that the smiles they had seen and were just masks.
In that kitchen, the maids decided not to speak to each other unless required. They all busied themselves, finishing their tasks as quickly as possible, and rushed back to their quarters.
Even Abi saw their change, but she was quite satisfied.
Her workers seemed more professional and swift, and she loved that. She could see the tiny flinches when she called on them, but Abi Mush was used to those in her line of work and in exuding authority. She, therefore, did not mind much if it did not affect their work.
In her room, Brianna was wide awake, flipping through her phone. Those pictures of the maid were priceless to her, and she loved to go back to them and flip through them.
"Serves you right! Who told you to cross me!?" Brianna said in that empty room as her smile got impossibly bigger. She got immense satisfaction just from looking through them. She scanned her room after this, and could not help as thoughts manifested.
Her room had all the glamour that one could think of, from the frills, jewellery, bling and whatnot, but it was cold, bare of any welcoming warmth. This may have been what had pissed her off when Brianna had visited Shelby’s room.
Shelby’s room may have been small, but it had that warmth and sunshine that hers was missing.
This was not to say that there weren’t sun rays hitting Brianna’s room. On the contrary it did. But it was more like something was missing.
One was more like a home filled with love, while the other was like a high-luxury hotel room; technical, everything was in place yet cold, and none was like home.
Shelby’s place had a lot of thought put into it, and it could be seen from the details: It was simple, classic, and friendly, and what had irked Brianna the most was the fact that the small room screamed millions.
Even though nothing had looked over the top, she was well-versed in money to recognize that even her parents could not afford that much for a single room while hers had ....
Well, did it matter what hers had? These just fuelled Brianna’s fury and dissatisfaction against her friend, Shelby.
Brianna pulled herself out of those thoughts and flipped through the video that had been sent to her. Even as a woman herself, she did not flinch from seeing another being treated so badly and mutilated on camera. Brianna’s mouth pulled up in another upward arch at this.
This was the video they had sent her after she had asked why the maid was still alive.
"We want to keep her as our entertainment!" The reply had come in, but then they had added,
"If young mistress would allow it!"
Brianna did not idea but thinking that the maid would suffer a fate worse than death, she gave the go-ahead, and they sent the video as evidence.
The faint cries of the girl from the video were heart-wrenching but Brianna did not butt an eyelid and smiled in satisfaction.
"Anyone who comes between me and my happiness must suffer a similar fate!"
Brianna nodded to herself and sent another text to them as if suddenly remembering something,
"What of the other task?" This was more important to Brianna as she could not get over Ava’s audacity to slap her. ’Ava will pay ten-fold for this! As for Geneva, she will be my mother-in-law, so I have to wait for the right time to deal with her. I am just bidding my time for this!’
Brianna waited for a while, impatiently tapping her fingers on the back of her phone. Her annoyance rose as no response returned.
Just then, her door was pushed slowly open, successfully taking her attention from the text.
Abi strode in and sat on the bed.
"Brianna dear, is everything okay?" Abi’s worried voice did nothing to lift up Brianna’s mood. What it did was remind Brianna that she had not gotten her revenge on anything!
On the other hand, Abi’s eyes narrowed menacingly as her gaze zeroed in on her daughter’s screen save.
"Why do you have that on your phone?" Abi rubbed her temple in frustration. The last thing they needed was for anything to be traced back to them but this spoilt daughter of hers readily had such a screen saver. This would compound things if she, Abi, had to do extra clean-up because of this.
"This?" Brianna asked nonchalantly,
Abi looked Brianna square in the face, "Even if you love it, this is dangerous. There will be extra variables that we cannot control. Keep it in a locked folder or something but not your screensaver!"
"No, Buts, Brianna! I mean it!"
Brianna did a few seconds of staring contest with her mother before she reluctantly changed her screensaver to a picture of Ian, making her mother sigh out loud. Abi was genuinely concerned about other things but not the fact that her only green daughter was watching such gory and grave media of someone who had once served close to her.
Abi did not care much about the people around her like that. They served and got paid. It was as simple as that. There was no need to form any complex and entangling relationships, and she ensured that her daughter understood this fact.
You’ve been cooped up in here for too long, dear; you should go out more."
Brianna rolled her eyes and turned from her mother.
Brianna, frankly, did not have much faith in her mother’s methods anymore.
’I really have to take things in my own hand.’
As if Abi could read her daughter’s thoughts, she said,
"Do not do anything silly. It shou-"
"Am I interrupting something, ladies?" A male voice sounded from the doorway. Abi and Brianna turned to the door to see the only man of their household peeking in.
"My princess!" Abram walked in holding a sweating glass. He quickened his pace and placed a wet kiss on his daughter’s forehead.
Brianna smiled, "Daddy is the best!"
"Anything for my princess!"
Brianna took a sip of the fuzzy soda drink. She closed her eyes tightly and let the cool liquid seep along her through as it teased her taste buds.
’Nothing beats a cold soda when you are down!’ She thought.
"Are you feeling better now?" Abram asked as he also sat down and pulled his daughter closer so that he could caress her shoulders.
"I am, now that you are here!"
Abram also smiled. He loved his daughter to bits and did not like to see her down like that. Nonetheless, girl-boy issues were expected in girls her age. In fact, for Brianna, it had only been one person throughout her life, and this, in Abram’s opinion, had not caused many issues for them.
He also knew that the issue they were facing with Ian was only because he was Ian Thornston. A man with a mind of his own. A man who made all others pale in comparison. A man who made the old and powerful bow to him. He was simply untouchable.
At the back of Abram’s mind, he would have wished that Brianna supported her friend, but unfortunately, she did not. Despite this and its moral implications, Abram would always support his daughter.
’It’s all so difficult because he is Ian Thornston! However, every man had a price. We just have to find the cost for Ian and make sure to get it for our baby. My baby should never want for anything in this life!’
Abi had tactfully remained quiet as her daughter and husband interacted.
"Brianna? What do you think about starting to work in our business? I know that you have done a few things-"
"No, Daddy, not now. I have more important things to do."
"Do you think your old man is useless? You have a winemaking degree. If we present you just right, you will have more times to meet Ian. Isn’t that what you are looking for?" he asked slyly, noticing that his question had managed to get his daughter’s attention.
"I know that getting another invitation to the Thornston residency will be tough. So how about meeting him in a professional setting?"
Brianna’s grin widened, and she flung her arms around her father.
"You’re the best Daddy!"
Abram chuckled and patted his daughter’s back, but Abi was lost in thought,
’Will this work?’ She asked herself, knowing the answer already. Ian Thornston was a competent man by all means and she knew that this petty approach would not work on him, but she knew something that might.
’It’s about time to speed up my plans. Very soon.... Geneva Thornston will also get a taste of what it means to cross me! It would be like killing two birds with one stone!’ Abi nodded in satisfaction as she sent a text.
A/N: Like mother, like daughter, one would say!
