Chapter 224: Chapter 224

It had been several years past, but the few elders and the people who had been in that room would never forget that day. The simple reason was that they had felt it, too! A few weaker ones who had only felt the aftermath of that power wave had coughed out blood. It had been as if they had been punched in their guts. No child in that room had gone unscathed. However, it had not been as bad as the two who had burnt the brunt of that wave firsthand.

The royal descendants who had been closest to the throne had, more or less, fainted.

It had been a chaotic day indeed. The one other thing that had been ingrained in their minds was Prince Syla’s roar of pain that had echoed in the room before he had blacked out. It was a sound that brought most of them goosebumps just from recalling it. The cry of a man wounded from deep within his soul!

However, their ascension rules had been simple: Since Prince Syla had not completed the ceremony, he was not their king and could not shoulder that responsibility.

Worst yet, a few days afterwards, a rumour spread across all that said that Prince Syla had committed wrong in the eyes of their gods.

"I wonder why he even wanted to take the throne!"

"Disgusting! Serves him right!"

"Hey! Shhhh! Do you want to be arrested?"

"None of the elders and kingmakers could stand up to him, but our gods would forever protect us!"

"Yes! They will always have our backs!"

"...but if Prince Roman is dead as they claim, why could Prince Syla not ascend?"

The last question was the dilemma on everyone’s mind. Everyone knew that something was missing, but they did not know what it was regarding the two royal brothers.

The rule had been simple: The crown’s succession had to be followed strictly. This led people to make many assumptions.

’If Prince Roman was no more in the land of the living as they claim, then it meant that he was not buried as per custom, or he has grievances.’

The second thing was that ’Prince Roman was still alive and living well somewhere.’

However, if the second assumption was the case, then why did he abandon his people?

There was a third assumption that many people did not dare to utter out of fear. It became the open secret everyone knew and suspected, but no one wanted to speak of it. After all, who did not like their heads attached to their necks on their shoulders?

In truth, Prince Simon did not remember that day much, as he was a mere toddler when this had happened. Even with the hush whispers, the palace records kept by the scribes were accurate and noted everything down to the minute detail.

Prince Simon had been there but had to rely on these records to understand the gravity of what was making almost all the elders hesitate. He still remembered when all of them had backed the one who had said,

’The throne cannot remain vacant any longer; the time is nigh!"

"Let’s prepare for the coronation! We can get the witch to perform a ceremony that may help Prince Simon ascend!’

Simon really understood them but still did not understand why they were behaving like wounded animals with no strength. He had expected them to have more backbone than they were showing. Obviously, Simon’s thoughts may have been because he was the next in line and being considered for the Fae throne. He was the closest to his father apart from his many siblings.

’What strength exactly did this uncle of mine possess for them to make such a fuss? Kill someone in seconds and not alert another who was within feet from him? How was this even possible?’ Simon thought.

In truth, Simon had heard even more of what his supposed dead uncle could do, but he did not believe in such nonsense. If his uncle Roman was such a great person, how did he disappear off the face of their earth? How could someone as strong and powerful as him as they claim not be able to defend himself from whatever had happened to him? Nothing made sense, and Simon only felt that they were exaggerating.

’These old fools would be the first I replace after I ascend the throne! They should learn to move with the times and stop such embarrassing actions like these!’

It was true that his father, Prince Syla, had suffered wounds that had been so grave that no one knew its depths, but how could they let the throne stay without an owner?

At least they all knew what could possibly happen if they let someone forcibly sit on the throne, but wasn’t that why they wanted to seek the services of the witch?

That witch was supposed to be above all and could make anything happen. It was just her price that was too bizarre and steep! However, the services she provided were always top-notch and flawless. She was the variable they needed for Prince Simon and had to get her at any cost!

Prince Simon turned his father’s chair and pushed him out of the room.

"The coronation will be held six moons from now," Simon commanded, and his father nodded.

’That’s my son! Even in the face of danger, he still braves forward!’

The elders sucked in their breaths and exchanged startled glances.

They had a hunch as to what had happened, but nothing was concrete. They had also just had some confirmation that Roman was indeed alive. If that was the case, weren’t they bracing themselves for a repeat of what had happened then?

One thing was for certain! None of them wanted to be the one to oversee the supposed upcoming ceremony because the last elder who had pushed forward ended up becoming just bones in front of their very eyes.

"Make it happen!" Simon threw over his shoulder before he disappeared from their view.

Their thoughts were similar: ’We thought Prince Syla was the only hot-headed person, but it looks like our crown prince is the same!’

Brian, the famous bookkeeper, hovered just outside the large room, flapping his wings. His mind’s eye swept across each of the elders, consuming their thoughts.

He sighed and then turned away with a single thought: ’It looks like History will repeat itself.’

As the day drew to a close, many other activities were going on all around them and in the human world. In the Mush mansion, there was a subtle tension yet again. It was from no other than the house’s princess, Brianna!

"Is everything settled?"

"She’s still in her room, ma’am."

Abi sighed, the veins in her head working as he cast her mind back to the day, she had walked into her daughter’s room, seeing her standing in the middle of broken mirrors and screaming her heart out.

Abi’s eyes hardened, ’It’s almost time.... Just a bit more.’

Abi flipped her hand to dismiss the maid. The maid scrambled off and quickly out of sight.

Immediately, she got into another room and out of sight, she placed her hand on her chest, which was beating furiously.

A few other maids raised their startled eyes to look at this one, and relief crossed their faces. Relief from seeing that it was their colleague and also another relief that she was okay. However, they did not stop to chit-chat as they had done some time back. They were busy at work, and even those with no work went down on their knees looking for non-existent dirt to clean.

One may think that this may sound unreasonable but they were actually being careful as no one wanted to found wanting.

It had all started a few days earlier when one of them had gone into Brianna’s room to clean.

The maid loved her job even though her employers were a bit impossible sometimes. The pay was good and she as well as the other workers were well cared for... or so she thought.

As she and another changed the sheets, Brainna’s phone screen lit up from an incoming message.

It was not the message that scared them but the screen-saver.

She took a step back, trembling as the other maid in the room lifted her head.

A squeak left the second girl.

Just then, Brianna had walked in from the bathroom.

"Leave if you’re done!"

The two scrambled out.

"Yes, it was." She whispered.

"... but didn’t they say that she requested some time to go back home because her mother was sick?"

"I- I- d-on’t k-now but I think so!" The second girl whispered in fright. The two talked like frightened rabbits, shaking all over.

They looked back at the closed door, as their faces paled. That could have been them!

The picture which was used as a screensaver that they had chanced on, was that of their colleague maid. She looked beaten to an inch of her life, if not dead. The question was, why would someone use that as a screensaver? That was so sadistic. This had spread amongst all of them in no time. They were all basically walking on eggshells.
