Chapter 154: Chapter 154
It was already almost evening when Albert pulled up at the Islanders’ Academy.
Students were streaming out and driving various plush cars out. Albert parked his car and waited as a teacher-guided Ingrid and Gabriel out.
After Ian’s visit that morning, these children had been spotlighted, and all teachers treated them like fragile glasses.
Gabriel skipped and swung his teacher’s arms. The boy was clearly very happy with his first day at school.
Ingrid, as usual, was very reserved, but a small corner of her mouth was upturned, showing her satisfaction with something.
Albert thanked the teacher and then looked behind the two children.
"I think Sam already left!" Gabriel volunteered.
Albert nodded and opened the car door for them, but just then, Gabriel paused, as did Ingrid. They all looked up at the sky and towards the direction that Albert had come from.
Albert was a bit puzzled as it happened at the same time. He squatted in front of Gabriel but then almost fell back on his bum with a startled gasp.
"What is it, Albert?"
"I- your eyes...." Albert started and then added, "Never mind, Gabriel."
Albert watched as the faint glow that had been on Gabriel’s eyes faded away.
He cleared his throat, wondering if he had seen it incorrectly, "What were you looking at?"
"That white light. It was beautiful!"
"What white light?" Albert asked, his heart still thundering in his chest. He looked towards that direction and saw nothing.
"Oh, I see!" Albert nodded and helped strap Gabriel in. Ingrid turned sideways to look at her brother thoughtfully but, as usual, said nothing.
Come with me!" Murray moved and retraced his steps towards where Shelby had been attacked initially and to her workspace area. Even though it was so dark and near impossible to see, these two walked as if it was bright out.
"Did they hurt you, brother? .... How were they able to incapacitate you? I mean, you, of all people? I still don’t get you. You are one of the few people who can even overpower me so...." Currey asked one question after another rapidly without pausing.
"I don’t know! I am still trying to figure it out myself!"
Currey looked at his younger brother thoughtfully. In his mind, there was no way anyone would be able to overpower Murray. In their lands and their family, Murray was supposed to be the best of the best. To Currey, the only calibre of person who could touch Murray in any way was one who had not been born yet, and that was why Murray was assigned as Shelby’s guardian, but this attack on her raised many issues.
"Is there anything you are not telling me, brother?"
"... and what would that be?" Murray asked, sounding pissed.
"Have you thought of the fact that whoever or whatever it was might not have been a Fae?"
"I-" Currey’s eyes widened as realization dawned on him.
"If not a Fae, then what?"
"Isn’t that for you to find out? You are supposed to be the researcher!" Murray snapped while thinking, ’I have to work harder on myself! Unknown being or not! I must make sure that this does not happen again! However, if Mistress Shelby is able to do that, it will boost me up as we are linked together too....’ He thought to himself. As to what the ’that’ was, only he knew.
Murray’s only obvious limitation was that he could not yet hold his physical form in the human world. There were certain conditions to be met before he could do that, and with each day that passed, his regret and self-blame mounted. He knew that he was in deep shit and had to brace himself for it.
Currey let go of the conversation as they came to the place.
Unknown to them, one of the cloaked figures who had been in charge of everything done was then a bit wary.
While they thought it impossible that Murray had been overpowered, the cloaked figure thought it weird that he was not ... at least entirely!
’We should not charge in unprepared next time. The shadow guardian shouldn’t have been able to reach her at all, not to talk to her. I underestimated his strength. It would have been bad!’
The person remembered that Murray was barely held, and given a few more seconds, he may have been able to detangle himself. Either way, without the presence of Ian, the operation would not have succeeded, but the person never told the partner, who was still fuming at the fact that Ian interrupted them.
The spell put on the shadow guardian was one that could have drained all of his powers or even killed him. He should not have been able even to blink, not to struggle against the restraints, and that was what he did!
’I shouldn’t be too spontaneous next time!’
Back at the scene, apart from Shelby’s foldable chair that had been toppled over, the canvas with the painting was upright on its mini-three-legged stand. Currey walked into that clearing, puzzled.
"What do you want to show me? A paint-"
Currey stopped short. His eyes focused on the painting as if he were a being that was being teleported to that painting. He felt his skin crawl, and an ominous feeling settled on him.
He raised his eyes to look at Murray, who nodded solemnly.
"You’ve not seen anything yet, brother. Our mistress, Shelby, is-"
They both stopped as their ears perked up.
"If it is what I think it is, then it’s better not to discuss this here...." Currey re-iterated grimly.
They both started to talk at the same time but halted.
Within a split second, Currey and Murray disappeared from where they were. Murray did make sure to take the canvas with him. In that gloomy park’s forest, only the desperate marks left by Shelby as she was being dragged were all that was left of the place to show that someone had visited there.
In the emergency ward, the stricken as well as confused patients and staff were about to gather their wits about when the same thing happened, yet again.
Just as the elevator doors closed, a tall, lanky man with copper-like hair appeared in their mist. This was the second abnormal occurrence, again! A few patients dropped with a thud as they fainted.
They had been trying to make sense of the one thing they had seen, but twice?
’What kind of witchcraft is this!’
"Take care of them, and I’ll take care of the cameras!" Currey took just one look around and could deduce what had happened. In fact, he could feel the remnants of Ian there.
This action further scared the people who were already scared shitless. The man was talking to nobody! They could not see Murray, obviously.
Unlike Currey, Murray did not need to say anything with a wave of his hand; the people in there fell into a deep slumber lasting just about a minute.
When they came to, none of them remembered anything!
Ian went up to the elevators and rode up to the top-most floor, the VVIP floor. This time, he did not teleport.
"It’s master Ian!" The nurses there squealed.
"It really is him! In person!" They could not curb their excitement even in the face of the glaring patient.
On this floor, they were better equipped to deal with various elite patients, so Ian’s cold demeanour did not scare them as much as it did with the emergency room nurses. Yet again, they had not seen him teleport.
"Get the doctor in charge!"
The in-charge nurse, maintaining her professionalism, led Ian to one of the suites briskly. Never once did she approach him nor suggest that he put Shelby down. Ian liked her!
He sat on the bed, still with her on him, and gently caressed her hair. In a way, Ian was mostly comforting himself. Gradually, the cold outlook gave way to worry lines.
A few seconds later, a doctor rushed into the room.
"Where is the patient? Have you checked her yet?"
The nurses shook their heads, and this made the doctor angry.
"Have you forgotten that this is the VVIP ward? Everything must be meticulous and e-"
The doctor joined the few nurses in the room and stopped short in his statement as he recognized Ian.
"I’m sorry, Chairman Ian. May I check on the patient? What happened to her?"
He also did not ask Ian to get Shelby down on the bed. He took out his stethoscope and approached the couple, only to stop short in his tracks when his eyes landed on Shelby’s face.
"Beautiful!" He whispered out, his eyes never leaving Shelby’s face. Even though glaringly bruised, she was still a fresh breath of air for him. He found that he could not control himself, and the only thing he wanted was to get to the girl!
The head nurse noticed something was wrong and tried to get the doctor’s attention, but he was in his own world.
They had all heard his words, too!
’Is he just stupid or crazy!’ The head nurse thought. However, before she could say anything, Ian’s voice rang out.
"Are you going to do your job and treat my wife, or would you like your eyes ripped out!" Ian stated calmly, but there was nothing calm about him.
Thank you so much to all for your votes and comments! I hope we can keep it up ^_^
