Chapter 74: Chapter 74

"Lucy, your aunt heard from the nurse that you drive a pink car worth several millions, is that... true?"

"What if it is true? What if it’s not?" Lucy Eaton retorted.

"No no, just curious," Aunty Yin pressed on, "Just tell aunty the truth."

"That’s not something you should be concerned about." Lucy turned and left.

By not outright denying it, Aunty Yin took it as a tacit confirmation.

As she watched Lucy walk away, Aunty Yin quietly followed behind.

On reaching the first floor, after Lucy stepped out of the elevator, she quickly dodged into a corner. Aunty Yin rushed down the stairs, looked around, and when she turned, she was startled to find Lucy standing right behind her.

"Trying to see if I really drive a pink car?"

Aunty Yin replied awkwardly, "I just wanted to confirm it."

"What then, once confirmed?"

"Actually, it’s not just me who wants to know. Everyone in our family is curious to know if it’s true." Aunty Yin explained, "We really want to know how you became so rich."

"You all really want to know too much." Lucy said expressionlessly, "Let me make it clear for you now, whether I have money or not has nothing to do with you, so stop imagining things."

"Listen to yourself, now that you’re wealthy and living well, we’re all happy for you. Are you afraid we’ll covet your money? Our family isn’t like that."

"I don’t need you to be happy for me, that doesn’t matter to me."

Aunty Yin returned angrily to the hospital room and repeated everything Lucy had said to the Ainsworth Family.

Finally, she said, "I saw with my own eyes her getting into that pink luxury car. It looked very expensive, just like the nurse said."

"Seems the girl has really caught onto a rich branch, no wonder she’s so confident now, she must have a backing." Oliver Eaton’s wife laughed dryly.

"It’s all because of your handiwork that the child turned out this way, isn’t it?" Aunty Yin couldn’t help but say, "Though Lucy isn’t your biological child, she’s still your husband’s daughter. If you’d accepted her, she wouldn’t have stayed with her grandparents, would she? Now that Lucy is successful, don’t you regret it? If you and your husband had treated her better, would she ignore you both in the future?"

"Sister-in-law, what are you saying? I have my own kids, do I need her to care for me?" Oliver’s wife countered, "No matter how rich she is, we don’t care."

"Whether you care or not, only you know."

"Enough!" Old Mr. Eaton scolded, "Is this never-ending? You’re both arguing back and forth."

The sisters-in-law quieted down.

Mrs. Eaton said with a somber expression, "The child is distant from us now."

"Isn’t that the truth," Aunty Yin agreed, "But her household registration is still with us; she’s still part of our family."

As they were speaking, the village chief of Ainsworth Village and his wife came in with gifts.

"Who are you talking about?"

The chief’s wife was surprised, "You don’t know yet?"

"Lucy’s household registration was moved a long time ago."

The Ainsworth Family was shocked, "What? It was moved? When?"

The village chief nudged his wife, "Too talkative."

"Chief, what’s this about? Tell us clearly when Lucy’s registration was moved?"

Seeing no way to hide it, the chief told the truth, "You were bound to find out sooner or later. I don’t know why she didn’t want you to know, but back then, she made a call and asked James to handle it."

He tactfully left out the matter about the two thousand dollars.

The Ainsworth Family fell into a collective silence upon hearing this.

The village chief and his wife didn’t stay long, leaving in less than five minutes.

As they left, Aunty Yin said furiously, "Mom, listen to that, Lucy has long since prepared to completely sever ties with us."

Mrs. Eaton sighed and closed her eyes.

"Call her and tell her to come here immediately."

Following her father-in-law’s order, Aunty Yin said, "She’s gone home for lunch, wait till she comes for work in the afternoon."

"Have her come to the hospital early, would she have time to come here once she starts work?"

Aunty Yin agreed and called Lucy.

She didn’t say what it was about, just mentioned there was an urgent matter and Lucy must come to the hospital room early.

Lucy didn’t ask much and agreed to come after eating. ʀᴇᴀᴅ ʟᴀᴛᴇsᴛ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀᴛ NoveIꜰire.net

She didn’t bother to ponder what the so-called urgent matter could be.

Scheduled to start work at two, she arrived at the hospital at one.

Opening the door to the hospital room, she was greeted by the sight of the Ainsworth Family looking despondent. She calmly asked, "What’s the matter?"

"Lucy, how could you transfer your household registration without informing us?"

"Why should I inform you?" Her complacent tone left the Ainsworth Family at a loss, "I couldn’t choose the family I was born into, but I have the right to move my registration."

"No one said you didn’t have the right, but don’t you think it’s ill-mannered not to even mention it?" Old Mr. Eaton couldn’t help but shout at her, "You’re just like your mother!"

Lucy’s face turned cold, and a deathly silence fell over the room.

"It seems as people get older, not only do their legs stop working well, but their memory fades too. You were the ones who wouldn’t let me return home, who didn’t acknowledge me. How is that my fault? Speaking with such self-righteousness, it’s truly a case of age without wisdom."

"What... what did you say? How dare you speak to me like that!" Old Mr. Eaton trembled in rage.

Next to him, Oliver Eaton glared at her, "Who taught you to speak to your grandfather like that?!"

"Is this your place to speak?" Lucy faced him with a cold gaze.

"You..." Oliver’s face flushed with embarrassment and he reached out to hit her. Amid a chorus of gasps, Lucy immediately threw him over her shoulder. Oliver lay on the ground with a cry of pain, struggling to stand.

Oliver’s wife and Uncle Yin hurriedly went to help him up.

"Lucy Eaton, have you gone mad?! He’s your dad. How dare you lay hands on him!"

Facing her stepmother’s questioning, Lucy replied, "If people don’t cross me, I won’t cross them. If they do, I’m not polite in return. Oliver Eaton, you worthless scum who left a child to be raised by your parents, and you want to lay hands on me? Are you still stuck in the time more than a decade ago, thinking I’m still the child who had to submit to your beatings without any power?"

"You beast, you ungrateful daughter!" Old Mr. Eaton, shaking with fury, stood up and pointed at her while cursing, "If I’d known you’d turn out , your grandmother and I would have strangled you at birth! We’ve raised you for eighteen years, and what do you repay us with?! Since your registration is moved, pay back those eighteen years of upbringing costs! One million, not a penny less!"
