Chapter 73: Chapter 73
"He doesn’t know I’m coming."
John Green stood up from the chair and walked over, "What delicious food did you make?"
"I bought dozens of fresh wontons this morning, and I was a bit hungry after work so I cooked some. I thought you were working overtime, so I brought you some, but it turns out you’ve already eaten."
"I’ve eaten, but I’m still a bit hungry."
The smile on Lucy’s face faded a little, "You had a big bowl of noodles and you’re still hungry? Aren’t you worried about bursting?" This text is hosted at ɴovelfire.net
"I don’t know what’s going on, but my appetite has been really good lately."
John Green opened the lunchbox and started eating with chopsticks in hand.
"In the future, when you work night shifts, I’ll come to keep you company."
This wasn’t a discussion; it was a decision made directly.
Jacob Green had already privately warned John Green, and John sensed why she wanted to do this. He smiled and said, "I’ve already told the higher-ups that tonight is probably my last night shift. From now on, I’ll be working day shifts. I don’t want to go a whole day without seeing you."
Hearing this, Lucy quickly asked, "When did you say this? Why didn’t I hear about it?"
"I just mentioned it today."
"Night shifts are rotated so that everyone takes a turn. If you’re not doing night shifts, people will think you’re getting special treatment."
John Green didn’t care, "It’s not just me. Dr. Lucy Eaton from Neurosurgery also doesn’t do night shifts."
"Why are you comparing yourself to her? Her situation is well-known throughout the hospital; a doctor who got in through connections and even went so far as to hit someone—so classless."
Mia Townsend sneered, "It was that Sarah Reed who was spreading malicious rumors, claiming she was someone’s mistress in your hospital. She deserved to be slapped. Does that have anything to do with being classless? Also, what’s wrong with getting in through connections? She has the qualifications, so what’s it to you?"
"I wasn’t talking about you, why are you so worked up?!"
"Saying that about her is no different from saying it about me," Mia Townsend bluntly told her, "because she’s my good friend."
Lucy went back to her seat and sat down, not responding any further.
In the room with the three of them, she felt like a redundant person, watching the two of them chat, feeling awkward and in the way.
So, she got up and left directly.
Seeing her leave, Mia Townsend couldn’t help but say, "Earlier, when I arrived, I heard your coworkers at the elevator say that Lucy switched her night shifts with someone just to work with you..."
John Green pulled her onto his lap and kissed her forehead, "Don’t overthink, you’re the only one in my heart. I’ll be more careful about keeping my distance from her."
Mia Townsend leaned into his embrace, "John, let’s stay together forever and never part."
"Okay, I promise you, except for life and death, no one can separate us."
She had been working all day and was very tired, leaning into his arms, her eyelids soon felt too heavy to keep open.
When Lucy, who had been wandering outside, came back in, she paused. She saw Mia Townsend sitting on John Green’s lap, being held horizontally by him, clearly asleep.
Seeing her come in, John Green gently laid the sleeping Mia Townsend on the sofa and brought over a hospital pillow and blanket to cover her.
"Sleeping in the hospital isn’t as comfortable as at home, is it? Your girlfriend is really demanding."
John Green looked up at her, "How is that demanding? She was tired from working all day and still brought me snacks at night. I really miss her, and seeing her makes me so happy."
"I really don’t know what’s so good about your first love that you can’t forget her after all these years."
"In my eyes, she’s better than any woman. Don’t speak about her like that again, it will upset me."
John Green sat down and stopped talking.
The office was extremely quiet.
Lucy’s heart felt like it was pierced by needles, and the night passed like a year.
Early in the morning, Lucy Eaton saw the new car parked in the garage and was in a great mood.
"Isn’t it too girly?" Lucy Eaton touched the pink car hood, "Nathaniel, you really know how to shop."
"As long as Young Madam likes it."
"It’s more than just liking it." Lucy Eaton chuckled softly, "I absolutely love it! The color is perfect. How much did this car cost?"
"4.59 million; it’s a new Bentley convertible supercar with excellent safety features. It’s also a ladies’ car, very suitable for you."
"I’ll take it for a spin." Lucy Eaton took the car keys and got into the car.
She drove wildly around the vast manor, circling it twice before stopping in front of Nathaniel Green. The window was half-opened as she said, "It really is a great car, I’m heading to work."
"Young Madam, drive safely."
"Okay, I won’t need lunch brought to me anymore; I’ll come back to eat."
Nathaniel Green agreed.
It’s undeniable that driving a pink car on the street is quite the eye-catcher, considering that most cars on the roads are black, white, or gray.
When the car pulled into the hospital parking lot, as she got out, the parking attendant asked, "Dr. Eaton, is this your new car?"
New cars typically have red ribbons tied on the wheels and rearview mirrors.
"This car looks amazing, how much did it cost?"
Lucy Eaton smiled slightly, without mentioning the exact amount, and just said, "Quite a bit of money."
She then slung her bag over her shoulder and walked towards the outpatient entrance.
The parking attendant watched her leave, then looked at the car’s logo. Having lived this long and directed parking at the hospital for many years, he had seen many luxury car models.
"Really wealthy people."
Sarah Reed rode in on an electric bike. She had seen Lucy Eaton get out of the pink car when entering through the gates and heard the attendant’s exclamation as she passed by. She immediately stopped to ask, "Sir, what kind of car is this pink one?"
"Bentley, costing several million."
Sarah Reed widened her eyes, incredulous, and confirmed, "What?! Several million?!!! How is that possible?"
"You can search online and see; they’re generally in the several million range."
Sarah Reed took out her phone and snapped a picture of Lucy Eaton’s car, then used image recognition to search and brought up the car’s Wikipedia page.
After reading it, Sarah Reed felt her mind buzzing.
After parking her electric bike, she returned to her office and immediately spread the news.
One person told ten, ten told a hundred.
Jealousy burned fiercely in her coworkers’ hearts, making them acutely feel how maddening it is to compare oneself to others.
But it also helped clear Lucy Eaton of the main suspicion of being a leader’s mistress.
Because from rumors circulating, their hospital director’s annual income was between three to five million, including gray income.
He definitely wouldn’t be so generous to support Lucy Eaton. With so much money, he could have as many young college students as he wanted.
Public opinion is terrifying.
A nurse intentionally leaked this news to the Ainsworth Family.
The Ainsworth Family was shocked beyond belief, but the nurse described it in such detail that everyone wanted to find out if it was true.
For this reason, the second aunt from the Ainsworth Family visited Lucy Eaton’s office at noon.
She blocked Lucy Eaton’s path after she got off work.
