Chapter 148: Chapter 148
"He doesn’t know," Emma Bennett stated with absolute certainty. "From my understanding of him, if he knew, he wouldn’t pretend to care about me in front of me anymore. The only reason he’s willing to pretend is because he thinks I haven’t seen his true colors."
Lucy Eaton asked again, "Has he already reached the point where he can control the entire Presidential Mansion? Does your father know anything about this?"
"He’s tacitly approving Arthur Bennett’s actions."
Lucy Eaton sighed, lifting her right hand to place it on his shoulder, "You’re living a tough life, I admire you for that."
Emma Bennett’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, and she said self-deprecatingly, "To them, I’m just redundant, but I think being alive has its own meaning."
"Those who want me dead are so impatient. They’ve poisoned me slowly, failed to act locally, and even tried abroad, yet they still can’t kill me. It’s really frustrating."
"It’s serious now, and you’re still in the mood to joke."
Lucy Eaton took him to the pharmaceutical wholesale market, where over-the-counter drugs can be bought directly, but prescription drugs are not sold to individuals.
However, among the drugs Lucy Eaton needed, only a few were over-the-counter, while the rest were prescription drugs, making them hard to acquire.
But in this society, there’s a gray area in every industry, so even if it’s hard to buy on the surface, as long as you’re willing to spend money, it can be done. If spending money doesn’t work, it’s probably because you haven’t spent enough.
After Lucy Eaton went to the pharmaceutical wholesale market, she directly found the person in charge, and got straight to the point, "I want some drugs for treating the brain. A reward of 200,000, with medicine costs paid separately. How do you feel about that?"
The pharmaceutical manager, for the first time, encountered someone who openly offered money for convenience when buying drugs.
Upon verifying that the drugs she needed were only effective for the condition and could not harm anyone, the manager readily agreed.
She received the most expensive and effective drugs available, purchasing a significant amount at once, with a shelf life of two to three years.
The meds were placed on Emma Bennett’s lap, and he held them with his hands.
"The money you spent on me, if it’s ever possible, I will repay it."
"No need," Lucy Eaton said straightforwardly. "If there’s a chance to ascend to power, I just hope you treat my father well."
"Although I find it unlikely, if that day does come, I promise you this."
"As an ordinary person, I really dislike getting involved in these deceitful affairs, but with my dad’s identity as it is, there’s no choice in the matter." Lucy Eaton glanced at the time, "It’s already past five, we have to quickly find a safer place to stay."
"Do you have a place in mind?"
"We’ll go to the bustling area, where the population is highly mobile, making it harder to track us." Chapters fırst released on 𝔫𝔬𝔳𝔢𝔩✶𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙚✶𝕟𝕖𝕥
"Aren’t we leaving the country?"
"When they discover we’re missing, they’ll definitely investigate. If they can’t find clues in flight and bus stations, they’ll surely check the docks for illegal boats. Right now, the most dangerous place for us is the safest, so we’ll settle down first."
Saying this, Lucy Eaton’s pace quickened while pushing the wheelchair.
A few minutes later, they hailed a taxi and headed to another area.
To avoid being tracked, both she and Emma Bennett had their phones in airplane mode.
Once they reached the bustling area, it was even dirtier and messier than she had imagined.
But precisely this was what she needed.
She specifically found a house situated deep within a maze of alleys, a small courtyard with two rooms, and because the rent was very affordable, she paid for two months.
She specifically informed the landlord that she and her husband had eloped after getting their certificates on their own, and since her husband was disabled, the family did not approve. The landlord sympathized with them and repeatedly assured them that he wouldn’t tell anyone the house was rented to them.
"I said earlier you were disabled, just as an excuse, please don’t mind."
"I am indeed disabled, there’s nothing to mind."
Lucy Eaton closed the door and pushed him inside the house.
"The house might have been for rent, as it’s obviously been cleaned up. There’s only one big wooden bed, nothing else. We need to get some basic living supplies."
"You want to buy a sofa?"
Lucy Eaton denied, "No."
"Then you’re... going to share a bed with me?"
"I didn’t mean that. I saw a pile of straw in the yard that can be spread on the ground. With a blanket on top, it works as a bed, and we won’t be staying here long, no need for too much preparation. I’ll hang your meds first. You wait here; I’ll go buy some stuff. There’s a market nearby."
As she spoke, she pushed him to the window, quickly administered the IV, and tied the infusion bottle with a rope to the iron railing of the window.
Lucy Eaton responded with a hum and went out.
Emma Bennett had a compulsion for cleanliness; from the moment he entered this bustling area, he was put off by the odor.
Yet, he remained silent throughout, as adapting to the environment is a survival skill.
Indeed, staying in a hotel is much more comfortable than here, but it’s also much more dangerous.
They didn’t know how many people were lurking in the shadows, eagerly wanting to claim his life.
At least here, their nerves didn’t have to be as tense.
Lucy Eaton returned half an hour after leaving.
She borrowed the landlord’s tricycle and bought quite a lot of stuff.
All were essential living supplies, and then there was a whirlwind of activity, busy inside and out.
She spread the bed, cleaned the yard, changed Emma Bennett’s meds again, and cooked, busy until her feet barely touched the ground.
She felt like she was turning into an old housekeeper.
By the time it was dark, the major tasks were accomplished.
"The food you cooked is quite delicious."
"It’s all practice. When I was alone, I often cooked for myself, but after I got married, I rarely cooked."
"This is the most reassuring meal I’ve had."
Hearing his words, Lucy Eaton burst into laughter, "You’re really quite pathetic."
He chuckled helplessly, "In the world, you can’t control your fate. When you went out just now, I was thinking, if I could live a lifetime just , hiding and anonymous, it wouldn’t be so bad."
"That’s impossible. It’s only a matter of time before they find us. We can only stay here temporarily. Your condition is severe; focus on treatment for now. Later, I’ll have plans."
However, Lucy Eaton and Emma Bennett were unaware that their disappearance became a strange event.
Because ever since they went inside, they hadn’t come out through the front door; they just mysteriously vanished.
The guards were shocked, first reporting this emergency to the Presidential Mansion and then retrieving the surveillance from the hotel lobby.
Nonetheless, what’s even more nerve-wracking for them was that the hotel responded, saying the surveillance had been completely damaged since the morning and was still under repair.
Upon receiving this result, the President was enraged, ordering that Emma Bennett be found, and if not found, he would have them all executed.
