Chapter 124: Chapter 124

"Mia, don’t call me sister anymore, you’re my sister-in-law now," Lucy corrected. "It’s about seniority."

"Even though it’s a matter of seniority, I don’t want to be your sister-in-law..."

As soon as these words came out, John Green frowned, "You don’t want to be her sister-in-law? You don’t want to marry me?"

"No, no, no, I mean, between her and me, I don’t want to be referred to as sister-in-law and younger sister-in-law. Just like before, now and in the future, I’ll feel more comfortable this way. Besides, Lucy and Jacob Green’s hidden marriage, calling me sister-in-law might expose it, so let’s keep the terms the same."

"Makes sense." John Green gave his support, "Then you two can just keep calling each other however you used to."

Seeing the couple had made this decision, Lucy had to agree, "Alright, you guys are preparing for the wedding, Mia, be a good bride-to-be for a few days, no need to busy yourself at the shop. I’ll be waiting to attend your wedding."

"The second floor of the shop will be unattended, won’t that burden you?"

"No worries, I’ll have Robert Langley keep an eye on it during the day, and I’ll check it out after work." Lucy glanced at her watch, "I have to go to the hospital now."

It started drizzling a little after 3 in the afternoon, and by 5, the rain was getting heavier. Lucy came out of the operating room, changed clothes, and returned to her office to find several missed calls from Charles Sharp.

He must have something urgent; Lucy quickly called him back.

Surprisingly, Charles was inviting her to dinner, saying he had something important to discuss.

Of course, she didn’t forget to inform Jacob Green; she wouldn’t hide it from him since he was her husband and naturally needed to know.

Jacob was feeling uneasy inside, but given his wife’s clear stance, his little worries vanished into thin air.

Just a dinner, nothing else, he comforted himself.

When Lucy arrived at a high-end restaurant, Charles was already waiting.

He was wearing a white shirt, sleeves lightly rolled up, with his suit jacket draped over the chair beside him.

She took a seat and after ordering, asked, "What’s the important matter?"

Charles propped his elbows on the table, hands clasped together, his gaze deep and brooding, "The Presidential Mansion wants to arrange a marriage with the Sharp Clan."

"Is it Sophie Bennett’s sister, Emma Bennett?"

"That’s right. Do you think... I should agree to this marriage?"

Lucy held his gaze for a few seconds, then laughed, "Why ask me? This is your own major life decision." ɴᴇᴡ ɴᴏᴠᴇʟ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs ᴀʀᴇ ᴘᴜʙʟɪsʜᴇᴅ ᴏɴ novęlfire.net

His face didn’t show humor; his expression was exceptionally earnest, "I think you clearly understand why I’m asking you."

"Charles..." Lucy hadn’t expected him to have feelings for her, "I think I don’t have any standing to answer that question. Even if we are friends, I can’t interfere with your marital choices. You’re an adult; what you want or don’t want, you can independently make the best choice."

Charles understood her meaning; he pursed his lips slightly and finally asked, "Lucy, if I move you from the position of a friend to another position, would that give you the standing to answer?"

"Charles, I don’t think I have the qualification to occupy the position you want to give, because I am a woman with a husband."

"What if I’m willing to wait?"

Lucy’s eyes flickered with disbelief; she couldn’t fathom such an outstanding man telling her he was willing to wait for her.

"If you’re willing to wait for your love, then I truly bless you. If you say you want to wait for me, that’s unnecessary," Lucy bluntly clarified. "I don’t know if my marriage will last until old age, because that’s unpredictable, but at present, I haven’t thought about leaving him."

Charles forced a smile, "I understand."

"Charles, you actually don’t see all of me; you don’t know me that well. I might not be the person you want."

"What is the person one wants? In my heart, there’s no standard answer. I only feel like I want to be with someone who moves me because I will feel very happy, comfortable, and relaxed."

The meal went tasteless for Lucy; though the two didn’t continue talking about this topic, she knew Charles made a decision at this dinner gathering.

It was already half-past seven when she returned home.

The rain hadn’t stopped; when Lucy came from the garage, she saw Jacob Green leaning casually against the living room door, with a look carrying several implications as he gazed at her.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Did you know you were on the news again?"

"Didn’t know." She put away the umbrella and asked, "Is it again the rumor that I’m Charles Sharp’s girlfriend?"

Lucy was surprised, "What was the content then?"

"Said you’re Charles Sharp’s wife."

Lucy smiled, "Really?"

"You’re still laughing?"

"Of course, I have to laugh. After all, the journalists writing the rumors are about to face the truth. The Presidential Mansion has targeted Charles Sharp; he’s quite likely to agree to this marriage alliance."

Jacob chuckled, "Then we really have to congratulate him."

Lucy entered to change shoes, remaining silent.

"Not only the Sharp Clan is involved in this marriage alliance, but also the Palmer Family; Frederick Palmer sent a message saying Flora Palmer was arranged today to Your Highness Arthur Bennett. What problem did the Presidential Mansion have to suddenly propose marriage alliances with two big families at the same time? It’s truly puzzling."

"Are you saying Flora is marrying Your Highness?"

Jacob agreed, "Even I didn’t expect it, let alone you."

Her thoughts were different from his; in the previous life, Your Highness Arthur Bennett hadn’t married till her death, let alone Charles Sharp.

She was immensely certain that Charles hadn’t married the Presidential Mansion in the previous life.

If the Presidential Mansion had arranged a marriage, then they would’ve announced it publicly; the news wouldn’t be silent.

This means that this world has diverged from the trajectory of the previous life. Unseen, her fate has changed, along with others.

"Tonight, Charles met you for dinner. Was the important matter he talked about the marriage alliance with the Presidential Mansion?"

"Why did he tell you this matter alone?" Jacob’s gaze held a smile, "What was the intention?"

"What do you think the intention was?"

"Could it be that he confessed to you?"

Lucy’s face stiffened, then she laughed, "Do you think it’s possible? What status does he hold to confess to a married woman?"

"Married women are all different."

"In your eyes, I may have appeal, but that doesn’t mean other men see it the same way."

"The more you explain, the more it proves that what I said is true."

"Why aren’t you talking anymore?"

"I don’t want to bother with you." She headed toward the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, took out a can of ice cream, sat cross-legged on the sofa, eating while watching TV.
