Chapter 164: Chapter 164

The man was sitting beside her on the couch, clinging to her like a baby. Even as Annie worked, he didn’t let go of her waist.

Normally on weekends, this man would leave the apartment very early in the morning to God knew where.

So Annie was quite surprised that he didn’t go anywhere and wouldn’t take his hands off her. And to think that he didn’t scold her for working overtime.

Surely, he only gave her that pile of work to prevent her from visiting X District. Otherwise, why was he always against the fact that she was visiting there?

“Aren’t you thinking too far, Annie?” The man gave her an impassive look. “You really think I’m growing on you?”

“Uhuh.” Annie nodded. “Mr. Lim, remember our marriage is a contract and we don’t have to act like a normal couple. If you keep acting this way, it makes me think…”

“That I want to rekindle our love?” He completed her words, his eyes fixed on her.

Annie looked away from his eyes and slowly nodded. Then she heard him chuckle.

“That is never going to happen.” Strangely, an unsettling feeling crept up her mind when he said that.

“Mrs. Lim, don’t worry. I won’t be a fool twice.”

Annie caught her lips between her teeth, sighing inside. Recently, she couldn’t understand what he was thinking.

His words and his actions were polar opposites. If only he would keep calling her names and continue treating her as if she was nothing.

“You once said my battles are for me to fight alone.” She looked at him. “Apart from using me, Mr. Lim. Why does it seem like you’re also protecting me?”

The man kept quiet and he looked at his phone. Annie didn’t expect him to reply, but his voice came moments later.

“Although we’re not a real couple, must I remind you that you’re now Mrs. Lim?”

“Mr. Lim?”

“As long as you’re my wife, I won’t let others bully you.” He stared at her. “When the contract ends, however, you can get into as much trouble as you want. I won’t care, believe me.”

Annie gazed at him for a long time without saying anything. Was that his goal? Was he set to make her regret ever divorcing him?

She took in a deep sigh and looked down at the documents, hiding the sudden gloom on her face from his scrutiny.

.

When the evening came, Annie had almost finished working on the reports she brought home with her.

She cooked dinner early and stored it in a flask. Then she went inside the bedroom and took a shower before changing into a blouse and jeans. When she was about to pick up her bag, the man walked inside the room and stared at her with a frown.

“Where are you off to?” He glanced at the bedside clock and asked.

Annie dropped her phone inside the bag and answered, “I have a lot on my plate recently, all thanks to you, Mr. Lim. Of course, I must convince Ms. Yu to come to the company so we can carry out the investigation.”

“Are you going to meet her now?” He sounded displeased.

“Sure.” Annie gave him a curt nod and hung the bag over her shoulder. “As I’m free, It’s not right to delay, right? After all, you only gave me a week to provide the evidence.”

“What if I said you won’t go out?”

“I’ll gladly yell out to the neighbors and say Mr. Lim is being abusive.” With a small smile on her face, she looked serious to do that.

“I wish I could cut off your tongue, Annie.” The man moved forward and caged her between the wall. “But you’re right. I don’t want a tongueless wife.”

Her words were just too sharp. The rapid change in her personality startled him sometimes.

Seeing that stopping her would turn out fruitless, he let her go after saying, “Come back early.”

The moment she left, he brought out his phone and dialed a number. “Assistant Jiang, aren’t you familiar with this city?”

“That is right, Mr. Lim.” Assistant Jiang was resting in his apartment and his boss’s phone call woke him up.

He rubbed his eyes and sat up on the bed, listening to the man’s instructions.

“Although this city is known for its peacefulness, it doesn’t lack goons, right?”

The assistant gulped and slowly nodded. “B-Boss, Mr. Lim… who got on your bad side? Who do you want to kill?”

“You-“ the man’s expression darkened. “Am I so petty in your eyes that you’d think I’d taint my hands with someone’s blood?”

“No-no-no. I’m so sorry. That’s not what I meant,” Assistant Jiang said nervously. But if his Boss wasn’t planning to eliminate someone, why would he be asking about goons? He wanted to hire them, right?

“Find me the most skilled ones. There’s someone that needs to be protected.”

Assistant Jiang’s mouth hung open. Then he wracked his brain for who that person might be.

Something clicked in his mind and his eyes lit up. “Aha! Is it Mrs. Lim? Are you planning to protect her?”

Even though the assistant didn’t receive any response from the man, he knew his assumption was right.

He was also a bit afraid for Mrs. Lim as he had overheard some secretaries gossiping about how Mr. Wang and Mr. Wu might be after her head after what happened.

Assistant Jiang feared for the girl, but who knew his Boss would come to the rescue?

Definitely, the assistant thought there was hope for this couple. Within this week, a lot of mind-blowing things have happened.

But none of them was as mind-blowing as how his Boss’s relationship seemed to be developing well with his wife.

After hanging up, Assistant Jiang didn’t put down his phone and he quickly dialed a number.

He spoke to the other person for a few minutes. Then that person sent him a contact after they hung up.

Assistant Jiang dialed that number and waited to hear a voice from the other end.

“Who dares disturb my peaceful evening?” The voice was intimidating.

“Hehe.” Assistant Jiang cleared his throat. “Mister, there’s an assignment I have for you. But I must ask you first… do you want to make a lot of money?”
