Chapter 13: Chapter 13
Chapter Twelve
Shane
Whoa… It was everyone's reaction when they saw how Sonya stabbed that crazy guy with scissors. Then she freaking picked up a chair and smashed it on that guys face. He was moaning and crying out in pain. It's a shame. Shane always thought that these types of people should be provided medical treatment before they can actually turned into, what they are now.
They all were escorted outside safely. Teachers were accompanying them. Which is weird considering the fact that crazed man has already been captured. Whatever it is. It seems that the whole class even that sexist teacher, started to have respect for girls. Or just Sonya.
"So who's coming with me?" Noah asked.
"I think we should all go to our own house. Our parents must be worrying."
Michael said and cringed at what he has just said. He looked at Shane. But Shane wasn't paying attention.
"You're right, we all should go to our home." Shane said absentmindedly.
He had heard his friend's comment but didn't pay attention. They always are very cautious about the subject of family. So he just ignored it. Plus it won't change anything in his house or anything with his parents.
"I've gotta go." Shane added.
"Alright." Michael said.
The main reason he did not want to go into his friend's house was Sonya. In reality, he was trying his best in searching for her. He was searching for her in the crowd outside the school. Finally he saw her walking away. She probably was walking towards the bus stop. Shane said goodbye in a hurry to his friends. He walked to the bus stop too. He didn't know why but he has this strange and strong feeling to talk to her. It was like if he didn't talk to her he'll go crazy. He has this anxiety. He saw that Sonya reached the stop.
He was following her. "Following her?" Shane murmured to himself like he just came to realise what he was doing. He cursed. He suddenly felt guilty but then he realised he lived in the same house as hers. He relaxed at this. He was standing different side then Sonya's. He wanted to talk to her but he held himself back. He noticed people around him. A middle aged man was making his way closer to Sonya. He was wearing normal pants and an oversized t-shirt which fitted him because he has a big, fat, belly.
Shane saw as he just opened his mouth to say something to Sonya when suddenly the bus came to a stop. They all entered the bus. Sonya takes a seat to the window, in a corner. Shane was walking behind to stand near the pole when suddenly a hand comes out of nowhere and pulled him to a seat. It was a very soft hand. Shane looked down to see that hand was gone. Shane was shocked. When he looked up he saw that, that middle aged man was backing away. Shane then looked back at Sonya who was looking outside the window. As soon as he took the seat she had snatched her hand away without looking at him. Actually, she never turned her face to look at Shane. She just pulled him next to her without a second's glance. Shane realised what had happened. They both remained calm and silent throughout their ride to, now, both of their home.
Bus came to their stop. They both exited the bus and started to walk in the direction of their home. They were walking with a good distance between them.
"Had this happened before?" Shane asked.
"You're not staying with your friends today?" Sonya changed the subject. The incident was fresh and she felt uneasy.
Shane looked at her. He knew that she changed the subject but didn't say anything.
"No. After what happened in school, we all thought that it would be better if go straight to our houses." Shane said.
"You were very brave today. I think that you…" he was cut in the middle of the sentence by Sonya.
"....what happened to your 'Stay away from me and my friends' thing? Why are you even bothering to talk to me?"
They both, unconsciously, started to decrease the distance. Now they were walking alongside each other with a friendly distance.
"Well now that I'm living at the same place as yours so we can't ignore each other, then it's obvious that we can't avoid each other. So, not talking and not facing each other seems illogical. We can live like acquaintance and maintain mutual peace."
Sonya looked at him. She didn't forget what he'd said about girls being unable to achieve a position, but she planned something totally different for that.
"Well we can't avoid seeing each other's faces but I can assure you that I can live without talking to you." Sonya said.
Suddenly Shane lost his balance and tripped when Sonya caught his hand and upper arm. She stopped him from falling and Shane caught his balance back. Sonya let go of his hand and upper arm. They continued talking again like nothing has happened.
"Well. It would complicate things. When people will notice our behaviour. They all will ask about it. It will be too hard and boring to explain. I won't explain it to everyone over and over again. Plus…. Yeah. I'm sorry about that. Maybe I've exaggerated things in that room. I shouldn't have done that. Sometimes I fuck things up without realising it."
They reached their house. Sonya opened the lock and they both entered the house.
"Yes, you really fuck things up…. but we all do it sometimes. Just maintain your distance from me and we will be alright." Sonya said.
Shane looked at Sonya. Sonya looked back at him and without saying anything she just walked upstairs to her room. Shane stared at her disappearing form. He didn't know how he was feeling or how he should feel. Maybe offended? Finally, he smiled. He didn't even know the reason but he smiled.
Later in the night, they all gathered around the dining table for dinner. Shane and Kara cooked food because Shane told Kara to leave Sonya alone. He told her everything about the incident in school. Kara told him that Sonya didn't know how to cook. Except for noodles. Shane was surprised. Or maybe not so surprised. She didn't look like a person who did anything else then to spend their whole time in studies.
Shane can't say that she is a nerd but she sort of gives vibes of that. Sonya has a very serious personality. He never saw her laugh or even smile. She always read some serious books so when history professor told everyone that she got the lowest marks in class, it came as a surprise.
It was a shock to know that she got the lowest marks in class. Shane almost didn't believed him. But when he saw his and another girl's answer sheet, he accepted that his teacher, aside from his low views on women, marked everyone's paper genuinely.
After that the teacher had said that no girl could achieve any position, he wanted to give him a very great answer in return but when he said saw Sonya with her utter silence he wanted her to speak up or do anything. Earlier, when he said that girls can't achieve anything he wanted to get a reaction out of Sonya. He knew she was listening to them. He even tried to mock her but she just picked up her bag and left the room.
As Sonya came down from the stairs she looked Shane and then to Kara. Kara waved her hand to Sonya to take a seat.
"You should learn to cook, Sonya. What you're gonna do when I'm not here?" Kara said.
"I'll cook noodles then." Sonya said.
"What if you don't have noodles left in the kitchen?" Kara asks.
"Then I'll order a Pizza." Sonya said.
"You don't ever order a pizza. You always hands me the money to take your order." Kara said.
"I can do it. I just decides not to." Sonya said.
"You'll do anything but learn to cook. Right?"
"I'll try but please don't expect anything special from me."
"Well, you're trying will work." Kara said.
Sonya looked at Shane. Suddenly Sonya made a face and turned to Kara.
"I'm not feeling well. Do you mind if I eat inside my room?" Sonya asked.
Shane could tell she was saying this because of him. He wanted her to stay but he wasn't going to pursue her to stay and eat with them.
"Since when you started to ask permission to do something like this?" Kara said.
Sonya sighed in relief. She nodded and picked up her food and started to walk to her room when she suddenly heard Kara. She stopped and turned to her.
"You should learn to get along with each other." Kara said waving between Shane, Sonya. Sonya started to say something when Kara spoke.
"Tomorrow is a small get together. And my uncle wants to meet both of you. So you both must turn up to the get together tomorrow." Kara said.
"What? Where? When?" Sonya said almost panicking when she noticed that Shane was staring at her she gained her composure back.
"In here. Get together. After your school. Take a leave from your work." Kara pointed to the ground. It was going to happen in their house.
"Uncle and some other people are also going to turn up here. I want you both. You can't be ungrateful to the person who provided you a place to live, now. Can you?" Kara said.
"Whatever." Sonya said. Sonya stormed to her room upstairs.
During this whole exchange Shane didn't say a single word. He was busy absorbing the situation. He knew that Sonya did not like to interact much with people. It never occurred to him that it makes her nervous. Shane laughed under his breath.
"What?" Kara asked to Shane noticing his laugh.
"Nothing." Shane said and then he smiled to himself. It's going to be a tough day tomorrow for her.
