Chapter 33: Chapter 33

Chapter 33 ~That wasn’t the agreement~

Brian paid Ella a visit in her flat and gifted her the book, “Wow I appreciate this with my full chest. I have not received gift in a decade now,” she said, smiled hugely at the thick book and started flipping through. “This is a comprehensive text on child delivery and mother’s wellness,” she said, flipped yet further and trying to read in between lines. “When did you buy it?” she asked cheerfully.

“Em,” he felt like lying but didn’t fancy lying to her. He would choose his words and avoid bringing his punishment of cleaning the hospital into it “Yesterday. But I didn’t buy it. I picked it.”

“You did what?” she asked anxiously.

“Yes it is what it is but never mind,” said Brian, I picked up because I know you will have need of it later.”

“Oh so thoughtful of you,” she said and flipped through to the front page, it has no name, such a careless owner.” She turned to the previous page and saw picture of a beautiful baby smiling in the hands of its mother. And her cheeks curved back in a huge smile Brian had not seen on her face before – it was like the breakthrough that accompanied the fulfillment of a single parent, when she thought it was end of show for her survival. Since the demise of the husband Brian had made sure her star shone brightest and her sunshine set quicker after the storm, “My baby is going to be as beautiful as this,” she said, feeling the photo of the baby and smiling cheek to cheek, “I am suspecting this baby to be source of fortune in my life,” she said, rubbing her tummy.

Brian said coldly, “I am delighted to hear that from you also to see happiness crawl back on your face. Your problem is mine. I will ensure your husband rest well and be merry whenever he looks down to you.” Brian said and noticed her face was still built in smile, despite mentioning her late husband. This was unlike her- she was really surviving and pushing strong. Brian dragged up a huge smile- he was fulfilled, at least she could push on and press onto the future.

“Wont you feel my baby?” demanded Ella, rubbing her tummy and smiling at Brian, “Come here and feel khally, come,” she pled, “Come and place your ear on my tummy and feel if it is crying smiling or frowning.

Brian stood gaping feeling like to go but wanting to decline, “Ok he said afterwards and moved to Ella, bent to her, a bit scared to place his ears. Gradually his ears made to her tummy and she smiled on placed her hand on his head and pushed it.

Brian was much on the tall side, and his waist hurt severally when he bent to Ella who was brief. He got the idea of supporting himself by holding on to her waist but he rejected it- he wouldn’t want a romance to register in her head. For all he knew Ella was a single mother now and except him, he was yet to see any man that came around her. He didn’t know why he had been keeping it up for her. He had convinced himself severally it was borne out of pity. He had seen Ella as a sister and a close pal. Although she was beautiful and uniquely dashing in morality yet the feeling had not been there; nothing more than ‘good friends’ had possessed him and he perceived Ella to be in the same box too. He had suspected all her nakedness display to be seduction but then she was pregnant and from the book, he had read how uncomfortable pregnant women could be whether summer or winter.

There was a mad knock on the door and grandma stood to answer it, building up curse she would lay on whoever that wanted to pull down her door.

“What the hell is wrong with you porcupine?” grandma asked angrily once she answered the door.

Meyer was the visitor. She had come as planned with Brian. Her face gathered flames as she became red, “I want to see your grandson, Brian, she demanded shooting her hostile face at her.

“Who the Jupiter do you think you are to think you can appear at my door asking for my Brian? Do you have a surname?”

At once Brian had heard voices and ran downstairs to behold the scene.

“I am his skate board trainer. He owes me some paycheck, twenty thousand dollars. She gazed across grandma and caught sight of Brian, “Eyo granny’s boy, where my money at?”

“Will you keep your poison shut and let my boy be. If you don’t comport yourself this minute I am gonna do away with you and you generation won’t notice it.”

“I need my money. I need it now. If I don’t get my money I will raise down this farm on you

Grandma had grown blues – she winked carelessly and saw the madness in her words. No one had threatened her with her asset. Like the strike of thunder grandma dazed her a resounding slap. “Go to your grandma in the grave and threaten her with her ancestors because I know your grandma died a broke ass.”

“Heh, oldie did you just slap me? No, did you just slap me?” Meyer asked, going crimson with her hand on her cheek, her eyes a flame of fire, as her thought fed her with words to tell grandma, she said, “What about you, my granny may not be as wealthy as you but she aint got HIV, old pig.”

That was the edge hammer!

Brian stood up gaping and made to them but Meyer had left. Grandma fell on the ground and started off with a sob and a cry and then a scream that aroused even Ella to run out of her flat in fear to behold what was happening. Each effort that Brian tried to console grandma proved abortive – grandma kept knocking off his hands as she wailed on the top of her voice.

Brian’s heart grew bitter against Meyer as he broke down in tears about what Ella just did – that wasn’t the agreement.

Worst days ahead…
