Chapter 318: Chapter 318

Chapter 318

~Brian takes the place of Kate~

Midway packing up his bags and putting his stuff in order before embarking on a journey back to California; Coleman rode into his room in his wheel chair. Shocked about what Brian was doing, he recalled that some minutes ago he overheard Brian making a call and booking a first class flight and now he understood the meaning of the phone call.

“What are you up to son?” Coleman asked, pulled on the wheel chair and rode in, “I overheard you book a first class flight to California. What is happening? Why the impromptu travel?” he asked yet further, dragging a frown across his face.

Brian was far way packing up that he barely could give his father attention at the moment. He kept mute and continued with what he was doing, he never wanted to give his father the cold shoulders but the task ahead had already taken over his senses that the only thing he imagined was going to take the place of Kate in the alleged murder.

“Am I not talking to you, son!” Coleman snapped through gritted teeth. He wheeled himself to the edge where Brian stood and held his hand.

“Hold on dad I need to get to California now. It is very important, dad,” he said hastily and kept stuffing his cloths into his bags. “Once I am back I am going to brief you on my reason for traveling so impromptu, but for now I don’t have any time for explanation. I have no time to spare.”

While in the heated bickering, grandma trudged in, casting her gaze upon Coleman’s face and much upon Brian who was clenching his hands on his bag.

“Where is the whipping boy off to?” grandma queried and trudged yet further to Brian, squeezed her face at him and asked yet again, “Didn’t you hear me? Where the hell are you off to, nanny’s boy?”

Coleman breathed uneasily, “You had better ask him granny. He has refused to speak up ever since I got in here. He is up to no good. His journey came impromptu. He never for once told me he would be traveling to California.”

Grandma blinked and folded her arms when the chilly wind blew across her body. The weather at the time was rotten cold and damp.

“Talk to me, nanny’s boy. Where are you off to?” she asked yet again and as though she was trying to hear it from the horse’s mouth and not a third part. She shot an impatient stare at him.

And he replied arrogantly, “California.” His frown held , he threw his gaze to the wall and snorted.

“What reason?” she asked hastily and peered her face at him to let him know her question was still valid and her reply was expected.

Brian thought it stupid and crazy to open his buccal cavity and tell them he was going to meet Kate and take her place in the crime she committed; a very drastic decision he would own up to for the rest of his life, and if people would curse and call him all sorts of names for protecting and saving a girl he loved so much, so be it. He was Brian and not other people.

Kate was his life and after life. While in Miami he had fallen short of true love and it was time to prove that love could be stupid; just as love could make one look like a bastard, do stupid things that offended the mentality.

“Grandma , dad, could you two give me some credit.” He glared at his wrist watch. “I got flight to catch , and if you don’t mind, I would love to get going now.” He hooked his bag across his shoulders and dragged on the ones that got rollers.

Coleman pulled on his wheel chair and came in his way. “You are my son. You owe me some respect explanation. Don’t let me give up on you, son,” he said so crisply and cold.

Grandma squeezed her wrinkled jaw and lips. “Let him go, Coleman. The camel has thick skin; it certainly knows how to survive the desert,” she quoted gently through dimmed eyes.

Coleman snorted all through, shot dark eyes at him and rode his wheel chair out of the way. “I saved you from being killed by my cousin this time around I am not going to save you,” Coleman said.

Brian turned around for the last time, “I can save myself now. Good bye grandma and dad,” he mumbled, pressed his lips tightly once he saw the shadowy looks on the face of his father who threw his gaze away from him; just to let him know he had given up on him.

The door slammed - he had gone…

As much as Brian knew he had a boring and rough flight back to California because he was cooking up his plans to convince the police and court of law that he was the actual culprit and not Kate. If anybody should be held responsible for the murder it should be him.

He had located the police station she was detained and when Kate was brought out to meet her visitor she couldn’t believe her sight.

“Brian!” she echoed and widened her gaze , surprised and wondering why he was on handcuffs and where he had been all these years only to appear to her on handcuffs.

“What are you doing here? What did you do that brought you to the police station?” she asked, still stunned and confused.

“Move it!” the police dragged Brian and pushed him into the inner room.

Meanwhile some party of police men were unlocking the handcuffs on the wrist of Kate, and handed her some documents to sign.

“Brian I am asking you! What is happening? Why are you taking my place and why am I being released?”

Brian snorted, blinked uneasily. With his lips paused, he fought back the urge to utter a word to Kate about the risk he was about to take

“Miss Kate,” the chief police detective groaned, “You are lucky we caught the actual culprit. We found a gun with his finger print and CCTV that showed he took the shot at Doctor Frank at the time. You are free. Leave this minute!”

“No! He is innocent! He has been away for years now! No!”

“Go home Kate! Go home!” Brian yelled at her, with his reddened eyes which welled with tears.

Kate screamed on…
