Chapter 205: Chapter 205
The old man selling roasted sweet potatoes thought to himself that, indeed, most of the people in this world are good-hearted.
Just then, a family of three came to his stall.
Seraphina Sinclair, drawn by the tempting aroma of roasted sweet potatoes, immediately felt a craving in her stomach.
"Desmond Fairchild, Jude, do you want to eat roasted sweet potatoes? My treat." Seraphina generously took out her wallet and pulled out a hundred-dollar bill.
Desmond, as usual, refused to eat street food. But Jude was quite interested in the roasted sweet potatoes and asked for one.
Even though Desmond said he wouldn’t eat them, Seraphina still bought three.
The old man prepared to take out some change from his pouch to give back to Seraphina, but she smiled at him warmly, saying, "You don’t need to give me change, sir."
The old man felt embarrassed to receive kindness for the third time in a row. Despite Seraphina’s insistence that he keep the change, he stubbornly tried to give her change. Seeing this, Seraphina suggested, "Why don’t you give us a few more sweet potatoes instead?"
The old man thought that was reasonable, so he wrapped several large sweet potatoes for Seraphina, feeling much more at ease.
After leaving the sweet potato stall, Jude held a large sweet potato in his little hands, nibbling happily. Seraphina also enjoyed hers, taking small bites with pleasure.
Desmond, however, stood silently beside them like a bodyguard, holding a bag of sweet potatoes.
Seraphina understood him. After all, he was born with a silver spoon, and would never do such things. Eating foods from street stalls was considered uncivilized for people of their social class.
Unlike herself and Jude, who had lived a civilian life long enough to become accustomed to these things.
Arriving at a resting pavilion, Seraphina invited the father and son to sit down.
There weren’t many people around, so Desmond’s tense face relaxed a bit.
Having eaten a few bites already, Seraphina peeled the sweet potato and gently offered it to Desmond’s lips, inviting him, "Desmond, this sweet potato is really delicious, you should try it."
"Really?" Desmond was skeptical.
"You won’t know until you taste it," Seraphina affirmed, "It’s definitely something you haven’t tasted before."
Her enthusiasm made Desmond curious, and he took a bite. The soft and tender sweet potato flesh melted in his mouth, filling it with an indescribable aroma, truly delicious.
Seraphina noticed a slight change in his expression and smiled with squinting eyes, "I didn’t lie to you, did I? How does it taste?"
Desmond didn’t know how to describe its deliciousness, nor could he articulate it with body language, so he simply replied earnestly, "It’s good."
"When will the fireworks start?" Jude asked while munching on his sweet potato and scrolling through videos on his iPad, feeling bored.
It was almost ten o’clock; if it didn’t start soon, he would feel sleepy.
Seraphina checked the time and rubbed Jude’s little head, "Are you tired? If you are, I’ll hold you while you sleep for a while."
Jude, being a little gentleman already, had been sleeping alone at night and wouldn’t allow Seraphina to hold him while he slept.
So he refused without hesitation, adding a reason that was hard to argue: "I’m already grown up, Mommy, stop talking to me like a kid. Besides, I’m a man and you’re a woman—men and women should maintain proper distance."
"You little rascal, do you think you’re ready to fly away?" Seraphina was furious with his words, this little brat.
Who was it that nurtured him for all these years, and now he had a bit of awareness about gender differences, rejecting his own mother? What a piece of work.
"I’m speaking the truth," Jude protested, his face being pinched by Seraphina, with only his pout in defiance.
"I’ve seen every inch of you since you were little, and now you’re telling me there’s a difference between men and women?" Seraphina retorted, attempting to pinch Jude’s chubby cheeks again, but Desmond intervened.
He said earnestly, "Jude’s right, men and women should maintain proper distance, you two should be less affectionate from now on."
The air was filled with a sense of awkwardness.
Jude looked knowingly at his father, "Dad, are you jealous of even me now?"
Indeed, precocious children can be really troublesome. Thɪs chapter is updated by novel※fire.net
Though he’s just a kid, he seems to know everything.
Being called out, Desmond didn’t feel embarrassed at all; rather, he boldly declared, "What? I don’t like other men touching my wife, is there a problem with that?"
"But she’s my mommy," Jude argued logically.
"She’s your mommy, but also my wife. Is it right for someone else to cling onto another person’s wife every day? If you’re dissatisfied, go find your own wife," Desmond asserted as he pulled Seraphina into his embrace, effectively excluding Jude.
Initially, Seraphina wanted to mock Desmond for being childish, but remembering how Jude had just refuted her, she immediately snuggled against Desmond’s shoulder, putting on a loving couple demeanor.
Jude, feeling abandoned, gazed at his parents with a hurt expression, his distressed eyes fixed on them.
Turns out they were right; parents are truly in love, while he is the accident.
The family of three was having a playful time when sounds of explosions were heard from a distance. As they looked in the direction of the noise, the sky was suddenly filled with various fireworks.
Seraphina leaned on Desmond’s shoulder, watching the skyful of fireworks, her eyes brimming with indescribable tenderness.
"The fireworks are so beautiful."
"Indeed, they are," Desmond said, as he gazed intently at Seraphina’s delicate face, his deep black eyes filled with profound love.
Seraphina was talking about the beauty of fireworks, while to Desmond, Seraphina was an even more beautiful sight.
Feeling overwhelmed by their display of affection, Jude sighed and sat on the nearby bench, uninterested in the fireworks bursting all around him. As a little third wheel to his parents, he now felt deeply wronged by the world.
Because aside from his parents, all around him were pairs of couples, making him feel invisible as a child.
Indeed, he was truly redundant.
Yet seeing Seraphina in Desmond’s embrace, the two so affectionate, Jude was genuinely happy inside.
He naturally hoped Seraphina could open her heart, forget the past, and enjoy every day of the future.
Watching his parents hugging, a beautiful scene unfolded, Jude took out his iPad, opened the camera, and captured this moment of warmth.
The scene was supposed to be serene, but it was suddenly interrupted by a cry.
Upon hearing the noise, Jude looked over with a resigned expression.
Rosalie Quinn was on the ground, without any semblance of dignity, pouting as she complained, "Damn tree branch, how dare you trip me."
Simon Finch, concerned, helped her up from the ground, carefully checking her for any injuries.
Fortunately, wearing thick clothing in winter, she hadn’t gotten hurt and was merely startled.
Seraphina and Desmond were initially embracing lovingly, but they were abruptly awakened by Rosalie’s cry, causing Seraphina to quickly withdraw from Desmond’s arms.
