Chapter 29: Chapter 29
Amina.
I don't know how many more there's to Nabil than I thought. He didn't follow her home as he said instead he dropped her off closed to their area as he said. All the while, his face was held in a frown. Ever since that phone call, his demeanor changed. I wonder what the call is all about. I was in deep thought when my small Nokia phone rang from my bag. Pulling it out, Ahmad's name which I save as 'Boss' flashed across the screen. Before I could press on the accept button, the phone was being snatched away from me
"What was that for?" I said knitting my brows together. The phone didn't ring again which means he hung up or switched off the phone completely. "Can you enlighten me why you snatched the phone?" I said again hearing silence from him.
"Nabil!" I exclaimed finally losing my patience. All this while he's been trying to get in my nose. Now he'd see the other side of me
"I told you to be careful with him. They're just using you. Why are you so naìve" His tone was harsh as he uttered out the words. Did he just call me naîve.
"Excuse me, did you just call me Naive? What the hell is wrong with you? What are you hiding? I can't fail to understand why you're doing all you're doing. Maybe you did have some issues with the family but what of me? Do I hold any grudge against them? No. Then why are you trying to drag me Into your problems. You told me to be careful but did you tell me the reason? You didn't. How was I supposed to do something I don't know the real reason behind."
The car stopped in front of the gate. Waiting for the man to open the gate, I got out of the car and turned to him. One look at my face you would know I'm beyond pissed
"You have crossed the limits. If you're not ready to tell me the hell that is going on in your life then don't try to make me do something I don't want to." I grabbed the other files. "And one more thing, I would like it of you don't involve me in your personal matters. And for the phone, you can keep it for as long as you want. For I don't care" without waiting for what he had to say, I sauntered away
At that same time, the elderly man was opening the gate. The curious look of seeing me walking inside when Nabil's car was right behind me was visible. I lightly greeted him and went away. My heart beating due to anger didn't subside a bit as I made my way towards the main door. Pushing the door open, I was met with a pacing Abida, Hajiya sat by her side, head buried in her palms. Abida walked in a fast pace towards me. "What happened?" I said accessing her worried face.
"I've been calling you. You phone was switched off. Some people broke into Mom's shop. Many of her asset were being stolen"
"What?" was what I could utter as I made my way towards Hajiya whose face was still buried in her palms.
"Hajiya" I called. The woman raised her head and I could swore I saw tears filled her eyes which she was able to masked it up with a slight smile.
"They turned the whole place upside down and took my jewelry. I don't know how they managed to unlocked the safe. No one know the pass code except me"
"Exactly my point mom. No one knows about it. Even dad. And the most surprising thing is how they knew about the jewelry" Abida confided.
"Honestly I'm confused" Hajiya said
"Allah will give you double on what you lost. We should be glad no one got hurt. Insha Allah everything will be normal. I pray the police will be able to get them"
Hajiya heaved out a sigh. "Thank you for the prayers. It's indeed true, we should be glad no one got hurt. Ahmad is already at the police station. We'll be able to hear something" Hajiya didn't finish talking when the door to the main entrance was pushed open. Came in Sadiq or should I say Nabil, with two large black nylon in his hands. One look at him and I averted my eyes, what transpire between us skimming through my head. He thinks he's the only one with problem.
"Good day Hajiya" he began, bowing his head slightly. With the problems in her head, she only nodded while Abida took the nylons from his hands. I excused myself and descend up. I could feel his gaze on my back but I wasn't going to turn around. I'm not going to show him how desperate I am to know the reason why he want me to be careful with the family. Even though I said I don't care about it but for some reason unknown to me, I want to know his secret. I want to know why he has that hatred for them.
Question by question kept skimming through my head as I glided up. Just as I step on the corner to my room, I heard a voice. A raised voice at it.
"Nadia please, I don't want to talk about it again. You have broken my trust already since the day you lied to me. So therefore, I don't think there's anything you'll say more that will make me believe you" I recognized the voice as imran's.
I know it isn't me to eavesdrop on someone's conversation and that a personal one but what he said next halted me.
"I told you already I'm not giving you any money. Everytime give me this amount, that amount. All because I love you. Sometimes I had to lie to get some money from my father. I'm warning you for the last time Nadia, leave me alone. In fact don't ever call me again. I'm out of this relationship" The silence that resonate next tells me he's done talking. I hurried away hearing his footsteps.
Entering my room, I slumped down on the bed taking in what I just heard. Some girls are just so unpredictable. How can you be demanding money from your boyfriend or spouse like that all in the name of love. Too much demand kills relationship. And I think that's the case for Imran considering his words.
But why would he lie to get money from his father? What if there's more to the family than I thought? What if Nabil is saying the truth? Even if there's what's my own in it. I'm here to work not to get into other people's matters. A small groan made it way out of my lips. To clear all that transpires out of my head, I decided to take a warm shower. At least, it'll calm my nerves.
It didn't take me half an hour to shower, dress up and perform my missed salat. It's a daily routine of mine to either call my mom or message her. Now that my phone was with Nabil, I won't be able to do that. Letting out a small hiss, I grabbed the hijab I flung on the bed and made my way downstairs. It's already past 8 which mean the family are already done eating their dinner.
And beside I can't just stay in the room after all that happened to hajiya. I wonder if the robbers have been caught. I thought as I set my foot on the last stair down. The first person my eyes went to was Ahmad who was heading towards my direction. I could swore I saw something flashed in his eyes. More like anger, which I knew who it was directed to. And that person will be me. Keeping a stern face, I adjust my hijab and began making my way again. I didn't take that much steps when he blocked me by stopping right in front of me.
"Follow me" was all he uttered before turning around towards the entrance door. His actions almost render me speechless. What does he thinks of me? But since I'm working under him, then I have no other choice than obey him besides he owe me an explanation for not picking up his calls.
I checked the surrounding for any prying eyes, when they stopped at Abida who was already staring at me with her lips slightly raised. While Hajiya and Alhaji are no more in sight. Passing her my signature glare, I alighted away before the boss of mine throws more tantrums than the one he's already planning.
He stood few miles away from the door with his hands resting on his back. What I didn't expect is to see Nabil. Their faces both turn to me when they heard the sound of the door closing. Ignoring the look Nabil was giving me, I stood a little bit away from them.
"Sir" I uttered also folding my hands at my front.
"The reason why I called you two here is because I want us to discuss something important " he began in his coldlike voice as always.
"Okay sir" Nabil answered before me
"You must've heard about the break out at hajiya's shop already. Am I right?"
"Yes sir" we answered together
"This had never happened before. I must say it's a test from the Almighty. We lost a lot of money but I'm still grateful that no life was hurt. So what I want you to do now if to be careful. Now it's the season of theft. Always keep an eye on your surroundings"
"Thank you sir"
"Kai Sadiq, since you're the one driving, make sure you always lock the car door whenever you want to go out. And Amina, you need to be very careful. As a lady you need to be cautious. There are bad people around. Whenever you're going out either go with Abida or Sadiq should take you.
