Chapter 11: Chapter 11

Amina

As Mr.Adewala or whoever his name is guided me up, my eyes were roaming around the place all the while. It is my first time coming to a massive company like that. Is this how wealthy the Abdallah's are? First the big house and now the company. My thought was cut short when Mr. Adewale's voice revamped to my ears.

"Get in" he ushered. I didn't miss the commanding tone dripping from his voice. Trying to stop myself from rolling my eyes, I got inside the elevator standing beside him. He presses the 3rd-floor button and we waited for the machine to start. My body almost lost its balance and I find myself gripping a particular place or should I say a particular body. The sound of the machine moving was something I have never experience before besides it's my first time in an elevator. Yes. There are so many things I'm new to and I have a feeling living in Abuja will be much more complicated than I thought. It took me two minutes to finally retained control and compose myself but there's one thing that I still haven't let go of. Sensing Mr. Adewale's presence made me turn my face to him, his eyes were gazing down. I followed his stare and my eyes immediately widened realizing what I did. I am holding his arms.

"Sorry" I muttered removing my hand instantly. The man didn't seem bothered though. Folding his arms across the chest, he stared ahead. I bite my bottom lip. Why the hell did I grab his arm? I'm sensing my first day at work would be tough. I have a feeling. After standing on one position for almost five minutes, the elevator made a sound, and the door slowly opens revealing another yet beautiful hallway. Mr. Adewale lead me to yet another way stopping in front of a door. He opened the door and we got in. The shiver of cold that ran down my spine made me clutch my jacket more to my body by the split Ac rising in the room. Thank God I'm wearing a half cover shoe which is a little bit tall, if not I don't know what would've happened. I will probably go home with a cold feet. There are mainly three desks positioned in a row, the first desk was empty. Mr.Adewale cleared his voice which got their attention towards us.

"Good Morning Sir" They all greeted.

"Morning. Cindy" he called. The girl called Cindy rises up. Her head was done in an afro. clothe fitted to her body, a simple make-up on her face. If I'm to judge then I will say she's beautiful though I don't know for her character.

"She's Mr. Ahmad's new secretary. So you are to guide her on her required work."

"Okay Sir" The rest of the two who are probably minding their business when we entered turn their attention to me. I could sense the tension that is about to rise in the room. Mr. Adewale has already left.

"That is your seat" she pointed to the empty desk beside her. I muttered a thank you before making my way to the desk. The moment I sat down on the chair, the coolness came in contact with my butt. I almost wince aloud but I held it in biting my bottom lip. Cindy dug her head down her lower drawer and took out some files.

"Here's Mr. Ahmad's schedule for the whole month. The previous Secretary has already compiled everything, so you don't have to suffer. Have you worked as a Secretary before?"

"No"

"Okay, I will help you. My previous job was a secretary before I apply for a job here that was last year. So if you have any problem feel free to tell me. And by the way, I'm Cindy. I know you heard it from Mr.Adewale but it's better for me to still introduce myself. The two there are my working college Fareeda and Nonso" She gestured to the two whose face were glued to the computer screen. I nodded my head in understanding.

"I'm Amina. Nice meeting you"

"Thank you" She offered me a smile. I thought she would be the type of person who will be ignorant but it turns out we would get along though, I don't think I will get along with Fareeda and Nonso considering how prideful they are feeling themselves. Besides I'm not here to meddle myself with that kind of people. I will serve my work quietly.

"Okay, you should go through the documents. Mr. Ahmad is an impatient man especially when it comes to his work" she was about to turn back to her computer screen when she stopped.

"Oh and Mr. Ahmad likes his coffee early. it's almost 9 am. You can make the coffee. The kitchen is located on the next door by your right".

"Thank you" I ushered placing the files she gave me by the side and embark on my journey to the kitchen. Locating the door wasn't that hard. And of course, I'm not that dumb.

Pushing the door open, my mouth hung open catching a glimpse of the kitchen. It's a simple kitchen yet it has a big space, it can contain our room. I walked through the place completely forgetting the fact that I was supposed to make Coffee for the boss. AKA Mr.Ahmad as Cindy and Mr.Adewale named him. I ran my palms on the polished counter surface feeling the smoothness on my fingers. And the coolness rising through the room made it comfier.

"This will be my resting place" I muttered to myself. It was when my eyes roamed around, stopping at the beautiful teacup that I finally came back to my senses that I was supposed to make coffee for the boss not idle around admiring the place.

Pulling open the drawer, I took out a box that consists of the coffee. A bunch of it. I don't even know how he wants his coffee how will I be able to make it. I decided to go with the one that catches my eyes and now how to make it. Should it be very hot or normal? I asked myself. I decided to go with the later too. My lips form a thin line as I carried the cup of the coffee ready to take it to his office. My foot halted in the hallway. I don't even know where his office is located. It seems I have to ask Cindy for help. Just in time, Cindy unlocked the door hugging some documents to herself.

"Um... Where is Mr. Ahmad's office?" I let out slowly. Cindy ran her thumb on her temple. "God, I forgot to tell you but I'm going to his office now, so we can go together."

"It's okay. Lead the way." The walk to Ahmad's office wasn't short like I imagined it to be. That means I will have to keep up with roaming around from his office to ours. Cindy knocked on the door and we waited for him to order us in like how bosses usually do. Authority. Just as I thought, his deep tone resonates to our eardrums. Cindy enters and I followed behind her. There he sat majestically in front of his computer screen.

"Good morning Sir" Cindy greeted in a professional tone. A voice I didn't know she had in her. How would you know when you met her not long ago? My mind mentally scolds me.

"Morning Cindy" She ushered me with her eyes. I was busy putting in my thought forgetting that I am reckoned to give him the coffee. I nodded my head at her and leap forward

"Here is your coffee Sir" I set it gently on the empty space. His desk was scattered with papers.

"Thank you" he answered back taking the cup off the desk. Placing it to his lip, his eyes slightly squinted as he watches me.

"Cindy, didn't you tell her how I want my coffee?" He asked. Cindy's eyes slightly widened.

"I'm sorry sir, it slipped off my mind. I will make one for you right away". Before I could make out what was happening, my body was being dragged away by Cindy.

"God, I almost get you and myself in a  trouble. I forgot to tell you that he wants his coffee extremely hot and by his looks just now, I thought he would lash at us but thankfully he didn't. Now let's go, I will show you everything". I'm glad Cindy is helping me. She reminds me of Aesha. We were about enter the kitchen when a call came through Cindy's phone.

"Excuse me, I have to take this call" she ushered moving aside. I will wait for her in the kitchen. I entered finding the other colleague of mine. Fareeda.

"Don't you know how to knock before you enter?" Came her voice. Wait what?

"Excuse me?" I find myself asking.

"Yes, you heard me right. That head of yours will tell you what is expected of you to say or do?" Okay, I know the lady will bring a bad vibe by the look she has been giving me. A prideful look. My heart is tempting me to react to her but knowing it's my first day at work, I don't want to mess things up. I ignored her and moved to the other side of the counter waiting for Cindy to arrive. Her next statement awakens the anger in me and I find myself leaning forward. I have a feeling my first day at work will leave a bad impression.

"Excuse me did you just call me dumb?" I asked trying to comprehend what she just said. Maybe my ears are deceiving me.

"If you are not dumb then why did you ignore me?". With the kind of disgusted look she gave, hatred is the word I will describe it as.

"First of all, I don't know you, I met you not long ago and secondly, it isn't a must for me to knock because as I can see this is not the restroom and you don't have to knock before you enter the kitchen and lastly I'm not dumb and I would like it if you apologize". My heart was already soaring with Anger. I have never met someone who insults me at first meeting but the lady standing in front of me didn't hide her hatred for me. Just like Hajiya and kaltume.
