Chapter 44: Chapter 44
A pleasant noise reaches my ears as the wheels of the vehicle tread on the dry autumn leaves that are scattered along the edges of the avenue. The driver turns off the engine and stays in place. Not wanting to take out my cell phone, I point my eyes at the car clock and let out a sigh, settling into the seat and leaning my head against the window.
It does not rain like yesterday and the streets look much less deserted, which is logically due to the good weather, which is not hot or summery, but rather cool and much more pleasant. People walk down the sidewalks wearing formal clothes in most cases, probably on their way to work ... and traffic is still remarkably heavy.
- May I know what we do here?
May: I need you to see something and tell me what you think.
Mine: About what?
May: Wait.
Mia: We've been here for more than ten minutes and ...
His voice begins to lose security, gradually wearing down in my mind until it disappears completely when my eyes meet that embroidered car that at that precise moment stops on the sidewalk in front
Mine: ... and on top of that I have an exam next week ...
May: Shut up!
I turn to the window. She leans over and walks over to my window.
Mine: Oops, but what about ... (stops short) STOP! Isn't that Samuel?
May (looks at her): No, really?
Snort and keep looking. Samuel, who got out of the vehicle a long time ago, takes off his tie a bit and begins a turn in front of the boss.
Mía: And why do you follow him? Go and tell him everything at once.
I sigh, not taking my eyes off him: he's wearing a British-style gray shirt (with black details on the cuffs and the area where the buttons meet). Despite accompanying that shirt with dark suit pants, his hairstyle could not even correspond to the formal.
I have to admit, if I could ... I'd stare at him for hours, wondering if such masculine perfection is real.
May (sigh): I wish I could.
Mine: You are up to your hands (she giggles), but that pride doesn't help you much.
May: By doing this I already lost all the pride I had.
Mine: But I don't understand, why not ...
His words are muffled, unlike this time not only to my ears, but literally stops speaking and frowns at the image seen through the clean and transparent glass of the window. She comes out, again, wearing something loose that I can't see what it is (probably a not very warm shirt or jacket). Not to make her fall low, but ... her taste in clothes is not entirely admirable in my opinion.
Mine: And who is that?
I shrug.
Mía: Ah, but what an idiot this kid ended up being.
May: Idiot why? If I was the one who threw him out.
He bites his lip and sighs.
Mine: Is she cute at least?
I look at her raising my eyebrows.
Mía: I don't see your face here, what do I know?
May (river): More or less ... I don't know, it's a different style.
Mine: Yes, it shows.
He says without taking his eyes off the short-haired girl who wears glasses as if it were a sunny day. Samuel seems to be looking for something inside the vehicle and stays there for a couple of minutes in which she just looks around. When he comes out and closes the doors, she smiles at him and they both start walking towards the sliding doors of the hospital.
Mia: I imagine we will follow them.
May: I see them together and it makes me want to break something (I unbuckle my belt).
Mia: Do you want me to go alone?
May: Huh? For what?
Mía: I follow them and tell you what they do ... if Samuel sees me, he thinks it's a coincidence and I don't even have to hide.
May: But why are you going alone?
Mia (snorts): Because you said yourself that it makes you feel bad to see them.
May: But ...
Mia (interrupts me): Stay here.
He says to open the door and lower the vehicle in a quick movement to which I fail to react.
It's been almost half an hour since he left and he still hasn't returned. This is starting to get unbearable with what little patience I have. I already lost count of the number of times I looked out the window, got out of the car, went back in, called her, texted her and got into a fight with the driver as an inevitable habit in my mornings. My fingers are wrapped around the door handle and I slap my thumb continuously, which must seem frustrating, but at least it relaxes my nerves. I look out the window again, emitting "What?" in a low voice when he saw that image. I begin to think that I am hallucinating or that perhaps I already lost my mind when I see her crossing the street. But that is not the enigmatic thing but with whom exactly he walks. What is it supposed to do?
I try to make sneaky gestures or grimaces at him, but he just smiles and opens the door. She slides down the seat until she is close to me and then she comes in, occupying the other end.
Mine: I couldn't leave without making you meet in person (looks at me). May, this is Eva.
He announces, coming back so that I can see the face of the young woman, who coincidentally is the same one that was with Samuel until a while ago.
