Chapter 99: Chapter 99

Chapter 99 What's Wrong With David?

"Lanny, what on earth are you talking about? Go to your room and get some rest, you must be tired," David pinched the bridge of his nose to hide his unease and apprehension.

Lanny sneered and paced back and forth in the living room, her eyes sharply surveying both David and Mary.

"Rest? And what are you two going to do after I'm gone?"

"Stop it, you've been through too much lately, you're too tired. People tend to get delusional when they're exhausted. Don't go looking for things that you won't find. Contrary to what you believe, there's nothing between Mary and me," David's eyes were fixed on the tips of his shoes, he didn't even have the courage to look at his wife.

"Hah! See? When did I ever mention that there was something unspeakable between you and Mary? But thank you for confirming my doubts, David. You've always been weak!" Lanny gritted her teeth, her eyes bloodshot with rage, and she took a step closer to her husband, forcing him to look her straight in the eye, "Why are you scared to look at me? Am I so ugly that you're afraid to look at me? You fucking tell me! Tell me right now!"

"Cut the nonsense, woman. You're acting like a lunatic. Go get some rest to clear that head of yours," David's toes were unconsciously pointing towards Mary's direction, a small subconscious gesture that betrayed his heart.

Lanny stared at Mary for a long time, then shut her eyes tight and remained silent. Mary looked worriedly at David in this quiet interval and mouthed the words, "What should I do??" with panic in her eyes.

That was the first time she had ever been in such an awkward situation, playing maid to her lover and her lover's wife. If God could give her a chance to go back into the past, she would never have agreed to David's request to come over to his house and keep him company. She had only approved of the idea because David had told her his wife was in jail and wouldn't be out for a while, but she didn't expect her to be back after only a week. Fuck! She should never have trusted men, especially those like David!

"That's it, I remember now," Lanny flung her eyes open and looked at Mary with a piercing gaze as if to peel her skin off with her eyes, "I remember where I've seen you before, girl. At Skytal! You're an employee there, aren't you?"

Mary shivered with fear, she could clearly hear her heart pounding. She was anxious, her palms were sweating profusely and her mind was blank. What a predicament! She had no idea how to defend herself.

"Ha-ha, cat got your tongue?" Lanny approached Mary and pointed her finger at her menacingly, "You shameless woman, I'm going to kill you!"

Lanny had always been true to her word. Before Mary had time to dodge, the violent Lanny had already pounced on her, pinning her to the ground. Her sharp claws were already out, hanging close to Mary's frightened eyes, as if ready to rip her eyeballs out of their sockets.

"Don't-don't hurt me, please," Mary's voice as her whole being was shaking violently, tears were flowing down her pale pretty face.

"That's enough, Lanny!" David rushed over, grabbed his wife's arm, pulled her away from Mary, and gave her a resounding slap to put some sense into her.

Lanny covered her face and stared at her husband in utter disbelief, "You hit me? How dare you hit me for this slut?!"

"Calm down, you unhinged bitch! Why don't you ever learn your lesson? Last week you flew to Hawaii with a sinister plan in mind to kill your sister and God knows what else, you ended up getting thrown in jail. And now you've been out of jail for less than 24 hours and you're already hurting someone else right in front of me! Are you crazy? Do that again and I'll send you to a fucking mental institution where you'll spend the rest of your miserable life!" David roared, his face turning red with rage.

"How dare you accuse me? It was Bella who made me fall off a cliff, and it's this bitch that my husband is cheating on me with under my roof, but in your eyes, I'm the only guilty one. David, you're such an asshole! I want a divorce!" Lanny yelled hysterically.

"Yes! I agree! Let's sign the divorce papers today," David replied sarcastically. Of course, he was just taunting her, adding fuel to fire. He certainly didn't want to give up his mate for a human girl, not to mention, his in-laws were very filthy rich.

"Fine! I'm going to get my lawyer," Lanny cried. David's callous reaction was like a stabbing blow to her stomach. She did not think that he would agree to leave her when she was at her most vulnerable moment. How could he?? She had just lost their child... David was so merciless!

"Get a grip on yourself, woman. Do you really think I would divorce you? Who would want you though? Look at yourself in the mirror, despite all the thick foundation, your skin is still so dry and rough. You're wrong to think that you're a nymph. Your ugliness is showing on the outside, Lanny. Wake up to the harsh reality. Your beauty has faded along with your sanity."

His eyes were livid, he carried on, his tone icy-cold, "What's even crazier is that you're a real psychopath. You've hurt people and been in jail. Who would want you if they knew the truth? You're damaged goods." That was his usual trick to harness women. Gaslighting. He was a pro when it came to manipulating women and making them fall into self-doubt. It was a tried-and-true method to control them. It had worked wonders with Bella. But he was wrong, Lanny wasn't the same as other, ordinary women. She was always so confident and was a stranger to self-doubt.

Lanny's eyes were steely and her trademark mocking smile returned to her face, "Oh, come on, David. Don't expect me to believe a single word of yours," she said clearly enunciating each word. "So, you think I'll be unwanted, huh? Let me tell you something though, after I divorce you, I will remarry Edward. Edward has always loved me. Who said he loves that fool, Bella? He was the one who persuaded Bella to withdraw her suit against me."

"My, my! You still want to be with that crippled, poor, wolf-less guy? Go ahead then, you have my blessing," David taunted.

"Crippled? Let me bring you up to date, my dear husband. Edward isn't even hurt, nor is he broke, nor has he lost his wolf. He's still an alpha. I've seen it with my own two eyes and mind you, my eyes don't deceive me. He's working at the president's office at Skytal right now," Lanny said smugly.

She hadn't planned to tell anyone the secret, but she would never allow herself to be belittled especially in front of a stranger, and David's lover at that! Seeing David's expression becoming more and more nervous, Lanny knew that she had won. Revealing that secret was definitely worth it. A dominant smile spread across her face. She was already waving the flag of victory in her head.

"What are you babbling on about? You're kidding right?? Or is what you're saying... true?" David stammered, his forehead covered in beads of sweat, his eyes staring straight ahead blankly as if he were dreaming with his eyes open.

"Well, of course, I'm telling the truth," Lanny confirmed. Seeing that David was in a hurry, the corners of her mouth curled up into a smirk. How could David possibly give her up to another man? But her smile didn't last long. David suddenly stormed out the door without even a glance at her or Mary, leaving the both of them to stare at each other, baffled.

"Huh? What's wrong with him?"
