Chapter 72: Chapter 72
Chapter 72 After the Farce
When Bella came to the company the next day, she heard two shocking news: One, what Lanny did during her birthday had spread throughout Skytel and its employees. The situation was so bad that even the president had heard of it.
Second, the news Bella had been most concerned about was Jenny and Kelvin's sudden resignation. She could not help but be suspicious about it.
Another set of questions popped in her head. She could not focus on her work, despite staring at her monitor for a long time. Ultimately, she decided to ask the president regarding their resignation finally.
"President." Bella walked over to the president's table. "Is it true that Kelvin resigned? He just got hired. It's... It's just so sudden."
"Yes," the president nonchalantly replied without even glancing at her.
Bella frowned. "I don't understand why he didn't tell me anything-and Jenny, too!" she said. "Do you know why they resigned?"
"I believe it's none of your concern," he said. "You should focus on your work and stop it with other people."
Bella's jaw dropped. She could not believe the president's indifference toward the concerning matter that her blood started to boil.
Before she entirely made a fool of herself by hoping the president would answer her questions and show concern, she spun around and went out of the office to head over to Anna's desk.
Actually, before knowing that Jenny and Kelvin had resigned, Bella had already thought of talking to them to learn what truly happened that night at Queen's Bar.
However, since they were out of reach, Bella felt lost. She did not know how to pick up where she had left from.
"Good morning, Anna," Bella greeted her as soon as she caught her working on her station.
Anna immediately looked back at me. "Oh, Bella! Good morning!" She flashed a bright smile. "Thank you for yesterday. I forgot to give my thanks. It's a great pleasure to taste your husband's cooking."
"Thank you. That is also a pleasure of mine." Bella chuckled and winked before her smile dimmed, and her expression turned serious. "Right, Anna... I came here to ask you about something."
"What is it?"
"It's about Kelvin and Jenny's resignation. I wonder if you know when and why they resigned?"
A hint of panic immediately crossed Anna's face, but she quickly regained her composure and replied with a smile, "Well, they passed their resignation last Friday. As for a reason, I'm afraid I also don't know the answer to that."
If Bella had not been prepared to observe Anna's reaction, she would almost have been fooled by her natural acting.
"Really... I can't believe they didn't tell me anything...." Bella bit her lower lip with a disappointed look on her face. "I hung out with them last Thursday night and lent my jacket to Jenny. It has a sentimental value, and I want to get it back, but I left my phone at the bar, so we lost contact."
Bella pursed her lips. She did not want to lie to Anna, but she was left with no choice.
"I think their phone numbers are still saved in the personnel file. I wonder if you can please give me a copy..." she continued.
Faced with Bella's plea, Anna lowered her head and thought for a moment.
Last Friday, the president suddenly ordered Jenny and Kelvin to be dismissed, but they resigned of their own accord under the impression. He also threatened everyone to act as if it never happened.
Although she thought that matter was strange, the president's order was absolute. She could not question his decisions, but Bella might make him reconsider.
"Okay. Hold on a second," Anna told Bella. "I'll just pull up their information from the system."
"Thank you so much, Anna."
Anna did not take long to get Jenny and Kelvin's contact numbers.
After Bella had gotten what she wanted, she walked into the lounge room and locked the door once she ensured she was alone. She then quickly dialed Jenny's number, but the call was immediately disconnected.
Bella thought Jenny might be hesitant to answer a stranger's call, so she sent a message first. Just as she expected, she received a call from Jenny's number a few moments later.
"Jenny!" Bella was relieved that she had successfully reached out to Jenny. "I'm so glad you called me back! I've worried about you since I heard you resigned from Skytel."
"Bella..." Opposite to her enthusiastic tone, Jenny's voice was thickly nasal. It was clear that she had just been crying. "Thank you for your concern, but I'm fine."
"Are you?" Bella probed, worried about Jenny. "You don't have to lie to me, Jenny. It's obvious in your voice that you're not feeling well. Do you mind telling me what happened?"
"Nothing."
"I'm sorry, but I don't believe that," Bella sternly said and thought of something. "Is this because of Kelvin? I heard he resigned, too. Did something happen between the two of you?"
"No, i-it's not like that...." Jenny sobbed. "But Kelvin's gay... I think that's why I'm being emotional right now."
Bella pursed her lips, sensing that Jenny was not being honest. However, if she had to play along, then so be it.
"I'm sorry about that...." Bella said with concern. "Can I come and see you? I'm apprehensive about you...."
Jenny went silent on the other line for a few seconds, but eventually, she said, "Sure, but please don't tell anyone. I'll send you my address."
"No problem. You can trust me," Bella said, although she was confused why Jenny sounded stern.
***
As soon as she got Jenny's address, Bella did not waste time. She asked the president for a half-day, claiming she was not feeling well and could not focus at work.
Surprisingly, the president agreed, and Bella quickly seized her freedom. She drove to Jenny's house and was disturbed that all the windows were covered tightly.
Given her personality, Bella did not expect Jenny's house to seem dull and lifeless. That only intensified her gut feeling that something grave might have happened behind her back. She thought it might all be connected to the incident at Queen's Bar.
"Who is it?" Bella heard Jenny's voice from the intercom after ringing the doorbell.
"It's me, Bella."
The door was immediately opened, and Jenny quickly pulled Bella inside the house. Once they were both inside, she frantically closed the door and activated all the locks as if she was hiding from someone.
Bella took that opportunity to scrutinize Jenny's physique. Her chest tightened to see her friend looking like she had gone to hell and back. It had only been three days since she last saw her, but it seemed like years had passed.
Jenny's hair was disheveled. Her eyes did not have the same shine as they had before. On top of that, she looked very anxious.
"Jenny, are you okay?" Bella knew it was a stupid question, but the words just came out of her mouth.
As if waking up from a dream, Jenny snapped back to her senses. "Yes, I'm fine!" she said. "Let's go inside. Come on."
Jenny led Bella to the living room, invited her to sit down, and poured her a cup of hot tea.
"Thank you." Bella took the cup in her hands but noticed the curtains again. "The weather is great today. Why don't you let some sunlight in?"
Jenny's eyes widened, and she shook her head right away. "I don't want to."
Although Bella could not deny that she had an ulterior motive, she was still worried about Jenny, especially her mental health. "You look depressed... Is this really just because of Kelvin?" she reluctantly asked. "It's been only a few days since you've met him."
Jenny avoided Bella's stare and anxiously started playing with her fingers.
"Please, Jenny, I don't want to pressure you, but I'm really worried," Bella said and reached out to hold Jenny's trembling hand. "I'm here to listen. You can trust me."
Hearing that last sentence, Jenny completely broke into tears.
Bella immediately pulled her into a hug.
"Thank you, Bella..." she sniffed and hugged her back.
Jenny had kept everything to herself, fearing that she could not trust anyone. However, she believed that Bella was an exception. If there was someone she could pour her raw emotions into without suffering any consequences, that would be her.
Heaving a sigh, Jenny pulled away from Bella. She stared straight into her eyes and said, "I'll tell you the truth."
