Chapter 65: Chapter 65

Chapter 65 Bizarre Events

Although the meal in front of her was delicious, Bella could not enjoy her favorite dish. She absentmindedly chewed her food while trying to remember every detail she had forgotten last night.

Bella's worried that what happened was not as simple as Edward said. Besides, he only got the information from the police, and she recalled the brunet saying that the blond one was the son of the Police Department's chief.

After lunch, Bella's doubts only heightened when she watched a news report on the television. The son of the Los Angeles Police Department chief was killed in an accident. It was also reported that the chief resigned from his post to mourn for his son.

Bella found everything bizarre to be coincidental. The accident, the lost cell phone, and her nightmare were like pieces of the puzzle waiting to be solved.

However, combined with the only memory she could recall, the information she got from Edward was insufficient. She knew she had to move if she wanted to get to the bottom of this.

After she had made up her mind, Bella turned off the television and walked out into the yard. She found Edward feeding the injured fawn, and an idea popped into her mind.

"Edward, I just remembered the fawn had no more medicine left. I'll drive to the vet and get some," she told him.

Edward nodded and smiled at her. "Okay. Please be careful."

Bella smiled back to reassure him, but once she turned around, her face turned grim as she was lying to him.

After an hour of drive, Bella had finally arrived at Queen Bar and was surprised to see that the lively street had turned dull. The place used to be crowded, but only a few could be seen nearby.

A large moving truck was parked in front of the bar's entrance. She tried to get inside, but an employee stopped her.

"Can I help you, miss?"

"Hello, Sir, sorry to bother you." Bella politely smiled at him. "I lost my phone here yesterday. I wonder if I can come and look for it inside...."

The man shrugged and said, "Sorry, Miss. We didn't find any phone after cleaning the mess last night. You can come in and search for it, but you have to hurry up. We have to close the bar and leave soon."

"Thanks."

Bella quickly entered the bar. Three employees moved tables and chairs out of the bar, and she could not help but get curious.

"Excuse me, Sir." She approached one of the workers. "What's going on here?"

"The owner said he's moving to another city, so he's closing the bar," the man simply said. "Anyway, I have to keep working now, Miss. We have to finish moving things today. Excuse me."

After talking to the worker, Bella walked over to the corner where she had been drinking last night. She was stunned to see a large hole in the wall, so driven by her intuition, she made sure that no one else was around before going through the hole and into the secret room.

The room was filled with darkness. Bella fumbled with the light switch on the wall and pressed it on.

Once the room was illuminated, Bella found it empty and clean, but she felt a sense of familiarity while looking around. She then moved to the center and lay flat on her back, facing the incandescent lights on the ceiling.

Bella bit her lip and clenched her fists to find it similar to her nightmare. She could not help thinking that her nightmare was the fragment of reality that she had forgotten.

The night had fallen when Bella was on her way home. Her mind was filled with haunting thoughts from last night and the time when she hit the fawn. The road was completely dark, and she drove carefully, fearing hitting another small animal.

In the dim light, Bella saw a figure right ahead of her. She vaguely identified a tall man waving at her and thought it was the chief's dead son.

'Is his ghost coming for me?' Bella broke into a cold sweat, and her hand could not stop shaking. She hastily pulled to the side of the road and slammed her foot on the brake.

As if she was traumatized, Bella frantically hid under the seat, holding her head with both hands until she heard a knock on the car's window.

Bella shut her eyes tightly and screamed, "No! Please don't hurt me!"

"Bella! Are you okay?!" Edward's muffled voice came from outside the car, and Bella's eyes widened.

She snapped her gaze to the window and saw Edward with his cane.

Worry replaced her fear. Bella quickly got outside to help her husband get inside the car. She did not know how he got to the road, but Edward had already beaten her to it before she could ask.

"You were gone for so long, so I was worried about you. You didn't answer my calls again," Edward explained. "I went to this road to meet you halfway. I remembered this is where you hit the fawn and thought you might be scared since it's already late. I'm sorry I ended up the one scaring you."

Bella shook her head and smiled. Edward's thoughtfulness melted her heart, but she was also worried about him going out in such a pitiful condition.

"I'm sorry. My phone was on silent mode," Bella reasoned. "But, Edward, you don't have to go all the way here. I'm also worried about you. What if someone randomly attacked you out of nowhere?"

"I don't mind as long as I ensure you're safe."

Bella heaved a sigh. She knew nothing could change Edward's mind regarding her safety. And after the stress she put him through last night, she did not want to argue with him any longer. She could not blame him for being overprotective.

As soon as they arrived home, Bella took out the medicine she bought, sat on the couch to apply it to the fawn, and changed its dressing.

On the other hand, Edward sat beside her, watching her for a long time before speaking up.

"Why did it take you so long to buy the medicine?" he asked. "Did something happen along the way?"

Edward's innocent question startled Bella for a moment. She stopped moving her hands as she tried to devise a plausible excuse.

"Uhm, I got a flat tire on the road, and it took a long time fixing it," she lied as she did not want him worrying that she went back to the Queen's Bar.

Edward did not say anything for a few seconds, so Bella warily glanced at him. He seemed to think deeply before he flashed a gentle smile and met her eyes.

"Well, that's unfortunate, considering it's your birthday tomorrow."

"Oh my!" Bella's eyes dilated. "I can't believe I forgot about that!"

"You really did."

"Oh, right! The company gave me the latest MacBook for a birthday gift-can you believe that?!" Bella excitedly told him before raising a brow at Edward. "What about you? Where's your gift?"

"Why not wait until tomorrow?" Edward asked, teasing her back.

"Well, I haven't told you yet, but Lanny prepared a birthday party for me and invited my colleagues. I know she's only up to no good, so I might as well move my birthday today," Bella said, pouting her lips a little.

"How can I say no to that?" Edward smiled meaningfully, then shifted to his position. "Okay! I want you to close your eyes first for ten seconds. No peeking!"

Bella excitedly nodded and closed her eyes obediently, mentally counting up to ten.

"Ten!" she shouted once she finished the countdown.

"Open your eyes, my queen!"

Bella slowly opened her eyes. She was welcomed by a cake on the coffee table and a cute miniature of their house.

"I commissioned someone to do a miniature of our home, made just for you. You can take this to your office, so you'll always have a piece of me at work, and you can just look at this whenever you miss me," Edward explained as he wrapped his arms around her waist. He then leaned closer to her ear and whispered, "I love you, Bella. Happy birthday."
