Chapter 39: Chapter 39
Chapter 39 Bella's Suspicions
The moment Lanny showed the picture, she had conjured up in her mind the following image.
Edward, who was angry because of the deception, fell on the dirty floor, hitting the ground in despair, aching for his unfortunate fate.
And the slut, Bella, with her face full of tears, knelt beside him, begging for his forgiveness.
'Both of you should beg for my forgiveness,' Lanny scoffed in her mind, gloating over her great revenge.
The two people in front of her owed her. Her crippled ex-husband was dependent on her for support during the last month of their marriage, and it was his fault that she didn't set foot in the salon for a whole month to save money for his livelihood!
And Bella, who was born without a wolf and was considered a disgrace to the family. If it were not for Lanny's sake, the president would not have even looked at Bella, much less made her a secretary, while Bella was heartless enough to persuade him to give her sister a pay cut.
However, Edward's reply shattered Lanny's wonderful fantasy, "Of course I knew, even if I am disabled, I can't marry a prostitute, and that's why I divorced you."
Edward's words made Lanny so angry that her chest hurt, and she smashed her handbag against Edward while pointing at him and cursing, "You're calling me a whore? How dare you call me like that, you son of a bitch!"
The next second, Lanny was pushed to the ground by Bella. This was the first time Bella had ever defied her sister.
Since childhood, every time Lanny was in a bad mood, she would take out her anger on Bella no matter where they were. She did not care what other people would say; even in the lively market, she didn't hesitate to smash Bella's eyes with her fist. Bella was her toy to relieve pressure. Bella instinctively submited to her sister out of fear because no one would help her.
But this time, Bella's defiance was not for herself but for Edward.
It was her first time to feel that she was needed by someone. Because of Edward's presence, she felt her worth, and believed that she must take care and protect him.
"Ouch! You bitch, how dare you..." Lanny glared angrily, gasping for air and clenching her fists as if she would kill someone in the next second.
"That's enough, Lanny!" Bella interrupted her sternly, "This is my house, and you are not welcome here. If you don't leave, I will call the police to take you." She made a gesture to take out her cell phone and dial the number.
Bella's threat was effective. Lanny cursed and left in a hurry.
Bella spat viciously in the direction Lanny had left, turned, and picked up Edward, who had fallen to the floor, helped him into his wheelchair, and pushed him into the room.
'Had Bella changed?' Edward thought, 'Or had I never really known her?'
In the evening, Bella was cooking in the kitchen. She was chopping carrots, but her eyes were staring blankly straight ahead, and her head wondering what was going on.
"Ouch!" Bella suddenly screamed as she cut into her finger.
Edward sniffed, saw Bella's bleeding index finger, and immediately fetched the medical kit and took out a bandage to bandage her finger.
Edward nervously stared at Bella's injured finger and moved gently, as if he was afraid of hurting Bella again.
This woman always made his heart ache. The first time he saw Bella, she cried on his shoulder, and from then on, Edward swore that he would never let her be hurt again.
"Does it hurt?" Edward asked softly.
"Don't worry, it doesn't hurt," Bella always acted strong in front of the others, even though her fingers hurt like hell now, and God knew how sharp that knife was!
Edward sent Bella to her room to rest while he tied his apron and continued chopping vegetables on the relatively low cupboard console. Tonight, he would make a red wine chicken stew for Bella to try.
This was the first time he had cooked for a woman other than his mother, Mrs. Wilson. He would do anything to make Bella happy.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through his mind. He put down the knife in his hand, took out his cell phone, and called Helen, the company's treasurer.
"Hi Helen, I want you to give my secretary, Bella, a month's salary advance tomorrow, and if she asks you why, you tell her it's to reward her for a job well done," Edward explained everything with no trace of emotion in his tone.
Helen, the treasurer on the other end of the line, was feeding milk to her child when she received the call. She was so taken aback by the sudden call that she hurriedly put the baby in the crib, opened her computer, and clicked on the Financial Statements folder.
The president had never initiated a phone call to any company employee before, and this call was so significant that it could even determine her future.
When she was ready for the call, the president's request took her by surprise, and she hastily agreed to it and called Anna, the head of the Human Resources Department, to get all of Bella's information.
She closed the folder Financial Statements and studied Bella's profile carefully; the simpler Bella's resume was, the more powerful her background was.
An hour later, Edward brought his freshly made French red wine chicken stew to Bella's room, a meal he hoped would cheer her up. He was planning to have a deep conversation with her to figure out exactly what was bothering her.
Bella was lying in bed in her room, her brow furrowed, thinking about something when a sudden knock on the door yanked her thoughts back to reality.
"Bella, can I come in?" Edward's questioning voice came from outside the door.
"Sure," Bella hurriedly got out of bed and opened the door for him.
The door opened, and Edward was in the doorway, carrying a pot of red wine chicken stew in both hands, and the tantalizing aroma made Bella forget her troubles for a while.
"Ms. Bella, please let me serve you dinner in bed," Edward gave a warm smile to Bella.
As the two were nearing the end of their meal, Edward asked Bella, "Bella, you seem to have been distracted since Lanny left. Can you tell me what you were thinking about?"
This sudden question shook Bella's heart. She put down the fork in her hand, gave Edward a feeble smile, and said, "Nothing, I'm just a little tired."
In fact, she was lying.
What was bothering Bella at this time was not Lanny. Lanny was nothing to her at all.
What was bothering her was Lanny's accusation about Edward, saying she saw him stand up and act like a normal person.
Bella subconsciously became suspicious of Edward; she knew a little about him. As for his leg injury, she had only heard a few scant stories, but she had never seen the medical appraisal that proved his disability.
