Chapter 65: Chapter 65
Throughout the sessions, the women were mostly quiet, each person lost in their own thoughts. It was only when the masseuses had finished their work and the women were relaxing that Mrs. James brought up the topic that she was talking about earlier.
“So as I was saying, I have my reasons for asking what I asked you earlier. I see the way you look at Sebastian and I know that you are already falling in love with him or if not, you’re well on your way there. Now, don't get me wrong at all. That is not a bad thing. In fact, it is what is his uncle and I desperately hoped for. That he will find a nice woman who will be in love with him so that he can stop pining after his ex.” She paused for a minute, glancing over at where Melissa was pretending to be asleep beside Carol, who was in the middle of both women. Carol nodded, wishing that the woman would stop talking. She was feeling very boneless, what with the good sex that she had had earlier on, and then the massage that had followed and she felt like just lying here quietly forever, but Mrs. James was not making that possible with her endless chatter. Besides she was not so sure that Melissa was sleeping and she did not care for a stranger to hear such a conversation.
“You are as nice as they come and we know that Sebastian will be very happy with you if only he will come to reason.” Mrs. James continued. “But I know for a fact that he is still pining after his ex, maybe not as much as before but he still is. I guess what I’m trying to say in essence is that you should up your game because in the end if after the contract he chooses to end the marriage, you’ll be heartbroken.”
“I don't know what you’re talking about Mrs. James. Sebastian and I have fallen in love. I’m very sure that you are mistaken and he does not care for his ex again. Also, I'm not sure this is a subject we should be having in public.” Carol said quietly. She had thought that Sebastian did not really care for his ex again, but apparently, she was mistaken. The fact that this woman who obviously knew him better than Carol did, thought that he was still pining for his ex sent an arrow straight through her heart even though there was no reason why it should. After all, she had only had sex with him once.
“I know my dear. But there is a reason why we are doing this. My husband’s health has unexpectedly taken a turn for the worse. In fact, he and I are going back home tomorrow at his request. He is in serious pain and would have to see his doctors so that they can see if there's anything else they can do for him. So there is no time in which I can talk to you one-on-one like this again.”
“Oh my God! I'm so sorry about that. It must be very difficult for you, Mrs. James.” Carol said, feeling bad for the poor man and his wife.
“Thank you, my dear. I have made my peace with it though. The only thing is that it's very difficult seeing him in pain. Anyway, as I was saying, you should up your game where Sebastian is concerned. As I said earlier, I have been around longer than both of you have and I know the game you are both playing.”
“Um, excuse me?”
“I know how much Sebastian loves his uncle and I know for a fact that he will be willing to do anything for that man. As a matter of fact, so would I. I know that you guys are just faking being in love or at least that you guys were faking it, most likely just to please my husband. However, along the line, you've fallen hard for Sebastian. I see it in the way your eyes light up the minute he enters the room and the way you watch out for him if he steps away even for a minute. In fact, I see it in every one of your actions concerning him.”
“I… I don't know what you're talking about.” Carol stammered, but the words lacked conviction even to her ears. Oh, God! She couldn’t be in love with Sebastian could she? That would be a terrible disaster. Even now, she kept glancing at her phone to see if a message from him would come in, and with a sinking heart, she realized that there was an element of truth in what this woman was saying.
“It's a good thing that you guys have decided to consummate your marriage. Now I know that what I’m about to say may sound strange and even manipulative, but I want you to know that I would never suggest anything that would be detrimental to my Sebastian. I have also come to like you as I would my own daughter if I ever had one, so I want the best for you too. I think the best thing for you to do now is for you to get pregnant. I believe that my husband may have mentioned something like that to you in the past.”
Carol could not hold back the gasp that escaped her lips at this suggestion, but Mrs. James did not give her a chance to protest.
“It would be in the best interest of everyone. You and Sebastian will have a child to call your own and I will get to be a grandma. If by any chance my husband is still here, he'll have his heart desire granted.”
“I can’t do such a thing without Sebastian’s consent,” Carol said, not even willing to entertain the thought. Sebastian did not want a child and there was no way she was going to trick him into having one as it could make him hate her forever contrary to what Mrs. James thought.
“I knew that you would say that. But I just want to ask for one thing.”
“Sure. What is it?”
“Promise me that you will think about it.”
“I promise,” Carol said, even though she had no intention of fulfilling such a promise. She had to admit to herself that she would love nothing better than to carry Sebastian's child though.
