I had only gained 428 skill levels over the last 3 months. It wasn’t surprising, since most of that was spent sitting around working on less combat oriented skills. Also, there were no fights for my life to push my skill gain up.
It was boring enough that I had taught my two companions Pulse Strike out of boredom. It was a good way to pass a couple of days, and I let the skill increase to tier 2. If I had skills I would advance them.
I also practiced hand to hand combat with both my companions as well. It was more teaching them the basics, so they knew how to dodge in a fight and take a blow. I also wanted to get some more experience in fighting larger and smaller opponents in such a manner.
Cold Resistance had improved quite a bit for a resistance and tier 3 skill. While it was painful to go outside during the dark season, I really wanted to push the skill up to Cold Immunity if I could. The dark season on this continent was the perfect training environment for this skill. I was probably not going to maximize it, but the progress was quite impressive.
Soul Immunity was still leveling up. Resistance skills were like moats. Easily bypassed, but slowed down effects. Leveling up improved the moat. Immunity skills were like walls. They improved the most when broken down and rebuilt. But with Soul Immunity that would mean death. But constant intense pressure worked as well.

I remained at Meldor’s Threshold. I would probably remain there until I used up my free points. My total stat points were 572, which put me at an equivalent level of 28.6 at 20 stat points per level.
They were still going up every three months by quite a bit. Other people would have to spend a lot more time getting a single stat point. So, while the free points were still tempting me, I wasn’t about to use them unless absolutely necessary.
There had been a couple of close calls, but I hadn’t given in so far. I didn’t have a set number of stats I had to gain, but as long as I kept gaining them at a comparable rate, then I had no issues with my current strategy.
At least my Magic stat was going up. That was incredibly important in fights. Running out of Mana greatly limited my options. Using potions mid-fight wasn’t practical most of the time. Afterwards, one could use them without worry, but during a fight it was a different matter.
The biggest achievement had been getting two of the three counter divination skills the gnomes used. The fact that Ozy learned Veil from the demon’s core was quite helpful for me learning it as well and getting a breakthrough.
I had been getting close, but Ozy’s insight had pushed me over the edge and allowed me to get that skill. They were a pain to level up. I couldn’t use any other skills while using them. The gnomes clearly made it a philosophy to keep them active any time they weren’t using another skill.
I was trying to do the same, but it was a challenge. Lanner had let me know he would keep them up all the time unless he was doing something else, even sleeping. But for me, it was incredibly difficult.
The gnomes might not be great at fighting, but they clearly had their specialty of hiding and were quite proficient. When you devote your life and culture to a group of skills you tend to get pretty good at them.
Ozy had gained several skills. Focused Regeneration was a way to directly use Mana in healing oneself above and beyond healing points. It also granted a greater control over one’s healing ability. If the demon had that skill, no wonder why it was willing to take several injuries.
Quake and Greater Quake were dangerous spell skills. They were kind of highly restricted spell skills that wouldn’t be easily taught, since they could cause wide spread damage or collapse a part of the dungeon. The usefulness of these spell skills was limited.
Cold Resistance was a lot more useful than Weapon Insight. Weapon Insight was another mostly useless skill for Ozy. It would help him know how to dodge and fight a weapon wielding opponent but would have limited impact on improving his combat ability.
There was nothing particularly impressive. The skills from the first demon were more impressive.
I had gained five levels of Demonic Hunter as well. I still didn’t understand what the skill did. The Seraphim remnant had referenced it, but it seemed like a title, not an actual skill.
I just had to kill 18 more demons to maximize the skill, which seemed insanely high. But the fact that the Seraphim referenced it most likely meant that the skill saw a lot more use a long time ago, when there were more demons.
There had been no demons on the Eldarin continent. If anyone would have found and killed a demon, it would have been my mother. The fact she hadn’t run into any demons showed that there were none on the surface of the Eldarin continent, or they were hiding themselves really well.
I didn’t want to run into anymore. Based on the demon’s journal, he wasn’t strong. Well strong compared to other demons. And he didn’t have combat experience against a wider range of opponents. I had no doubt that the demon was much stronger than the two ones that I had killed.
Calling them legends was doing a bit of a disservice to legends, but their level was that high. But a legend was more than just a level, it was also their skills. One needed the skills to back up their level.
Also, the Demon’s didn’t have balanced stats as far as I could tell. Their Strength and Agility, while superior to mine, wasn’t that far away. I would estimate about twice as high as me.
Perhaps it was the fact they were giving off more Mana in my vision. They might not even be legends, but they gave off enough Mana to appear stronger. Perhaps it was a threat display of some kind.
The demon had Veil since Ozy had gained that skill from it. But it was clear the demon didn’t practice it a lot like the gnomes did. Constantly, whenever they weren’t using another skill.
It was a great skill to work on if you were living a simple life without using other skills or training. But I was constantly training and using other skills. Improving the counter divination skills would take a long time.
If the demon understood his skill better, it would have used Veil, to reduce my Danger Sense from reacting as strongly. Or using it after I had cut off its foot. One could have skills, but knowing how to use them to counter other skills was not something that was easily learned.
My mother hadn’t touched that much on such things. She had only explained that having a range of skills to handle different situations was important. If I ever had trouble dealing with something, I should learn another skill to handle that situation in the future. The key was to survive to learn another skill to handle that situation.
As for getting along with Wild Tail, there were no problems. He was surprisingly easy to get along with. I would have thought there would have been more social difficulties, but he was clearly on his best behavior, since he wanted to leave this place.
I didn’t blame him. The beastkin continent was a miserable place. Once the dark season was over, I couldn’t wait to leave. Even with my enchantment heating things up and Wild Tail using Solar Orb, there was a chill in the air.
Not enough to be harmful, but enough to be noticeable, even hidden away inside this building. Going outside was incredibly brutal, but I forced myself to do that twice every day. I only lasted a handful of minutes of each time, but I didn’t plan on stopping.
It made me wonder about absorption skills. If I got that far, how would I handle elemental damage? I knew that resistance was like a moat, and immunity like a wall. But I had no idea what absorption would be like. I did know they granted Mana directly from the associated damage type.
Soul Absorption would be a permanent boost to my Mana regeneration. At my current rate of improving Soul Immunity, I would probably get Soul Absorption in 6 to 10 years. A fairly long time compared to my life, but quite impressive for a tier 5 skill that had supporting skills leading up to it.

No wonder why no one had ever gotten a tier 7 skill. Constantly training such a skill would be difficult. Even if it was passive, it would crawl forward. Well the Seraphim were the exception with the skills they had offered me.
I had spent far too much time trying to think how Seraphim Skill Tempering and Seraphim Stat Tempering would work. If I could reverse engineer them, that would be amazing. But I didn’t see how I could use Mana to boost my skills and stats.
I knew Mana composed the skills and stats as part of my soul, but I had no idea how anything worked at a technical level. The problem being was that it wasn’t simply a matter of adding more Mana to improve something. That Mana was carefully structured.
It was like having a mansion that was already built and then having to go in and adjust the foundation of the mansion without damaging anything. I understood what the goal was, but no idea how to accomplish such a thing myself.
Even the College had only done the most cursory studies on such topics and hadn’t made much progress besides using Mana Manipulation to unlock skills. As for improving them, that came from minor improvements with the skills.
I suppose if one knew how a skill or stat was supposed to look at a higher level, then one could use such a technique. But I didn’t think the Seraphim skills worked like that. Otherwise they wouldn’t be stand alone skills. There would be a lot of supporting Mana manipulation skills.
Like the divination skill I had gotten, I really didn’t understand how it precisely worked. And if I didn’t know that, I could easily kill myself or ruin my soul, instead of improving a skill or stat. The risk was far too high.
Still, I really wanted those two skills. A single training method for everything. If all the Seraphim had such skills, they were truly at the top of the power pyramid, displacing my mother and the demon who had killed her.
