Chapter 35: Chapter 35

DOWNFALL

*****************

DAVID’S POV

*****************

The day has not started the way I envisioned, it is beginning to seem as if nature and man are against my every move. There seems to be a greater power at play over my life. The weather forecast for today promised sunshine but the opposite is the case. The downpour had been heavy with bits of thunderstorms, now my meeting has been canceled till further notice and the deal I am pursuing is worth millions. It had taken me a lot of time and effort including spending lots of money to secure the meeting but now everything is on hold. My mood right now is probably worse than today's weather.

Since my parents announced their plans to retire and the quest of whom to take up the mantle of power began, my luck dwindled. And from the information I was getting, Sophie seemed to be having better luck than me.

My wife's family had refused to help me as they usually did, according to them their new business partner had warned them of a termination of their business deal if they assisted me. I asked my father-in-law to tell me the name of the company but he claimed he wasn't aware of who they are as the company had insisted to remain anonymous and they couldn't afford to lose the deal they had with them.

As I watched the palettes of rainfall on my window, I wondered who I had offended in the past that was intent on destroying me. Just then Sophie's low life of a husband passed by, he was a complete scum of the earth, but I would not lie, lately, he looked different, there seemed to be a power surge around him. He looked more athletic and had a powerful gait in his steps. Freeloader the word screamed in my head, and that was exactly what he was, eating our food and completely relying on Sophie for money, what a pathetic waste of a man.

“Hey! You, where have you been.'' I called out to Caleb as he came closer, for almost a week he had disappeared to god knows where.

“Here and there.” he gave me a smug reply.

The effrontery for a mere servant to speak to me that way. He would surely be the scapegoat of the wrath I feel within me right now.

“Seems you have forgotten your place in this house, do you want me to remind you?” I scowled at him, a word from me in the right ear and he would regret ever knowing me.

“Are you not a sorry excuse of a man, living off my niece.'' I enjoyed watching him seeth in anger, and since I had nothing better to do today, why not poke him. But I was surprised at his calmness, he didn't react as I had hoped rather he smiled and walked away, I shouted at him to come back or face my wrath but he kept moving, I felt angrier and ruffled, I knew I was all red as I began to feel a burning sensation in my body which usually happens whenever I was frustrated and angry.

My plan had once again backfired against me. I am worthless now, I can't secure a business deal nor can I make my brother-in-law angry. I feel more miserable now than earlier and the weather seemed to be in sync with my mood as it rained heavier with multiple thunderstorms.

Next day

“What do you mean by it has been terminated, we have been in business with Travis Groups for donkey years,'' I yelled at my secretary.

She drew back away from me in fright, but I would never lay my hands on a woman or anyone no matter how angry I was, so she needn’t worry.

“I don't ...know.” she stammered.

“You mean they just canceled on us without any reason.” I tried to speak more calmly than I felt.

“It seems like it.” she shrugged.

The land phone on my office table rang, drawing my attention to it. With a snap, I picked it up and gestured to my secretary to leave my office.

“Hello”

“How do you feel?” the voice on the other end said laughing

“Who is this?” I tried not to sound irritated.

“Your worst nightmare”

“Listen, whoever you might be, I'm not in the mood for any hide and seek game with you. Say what you called me for and stop beating around the bush or wasting my time.” I hissed into the phone

“When I am through with you, time will be all you will have left. The business loss you just suffered today is just the beginning.” he laughed again arrogantly.

“You mean...who are you?” I couldn't breathe, with my free hand I loosened my tie.

The phone went dead.

Now it was confirmed that I had an enemy, a powerful one indeed.
