Chapter 30: Chapter 30
“Oh god, I’m going to cry.” Flora gasps when we stop at the end of the aisle. The crowd can’t see us, but we can see Williams from where we’re standing, and I think that’s what made her nervous again. Williams wearing a spotless white suit, and if there’s someone who can pull it off, it’s definitely him. His hands are clasped in front of him, still, but he’s moving his knee so I can tell he’s also nervous.
I turn to Flora and grab her hands. “Flora don’t cry. You’ll ruin your makeup,” I remind her. “Take a deep breath.” I take deep breaths with her until she’s calm.
“Okay.”
“Okay.” I smile at her. “Flora, you look beautiful. Everything looks amazing—you have nothing to worry about. Now go, so we can get this over with because these heels are killing me,” I joke. But really…these heels suck.
She laughs nervously. “I’m ready.”
“I’m going to walk now,” I whisper then turn around, facing the white aisle in front of me. When the orchestra sees me, they start playing. I walk slowly—really wanting to run—with a smile on my face. I smile and Williams when I meet his gaze and meet Heather and Patty at the altar.
The traditional wedding march starts when Flora comes into sight holding her father’s arm. I smile when I see her, ecstatic for her. I’m pretty sure Williams stops breathing when he sees her. He just stares, making Flora laugh.
The ceremony is perfect. I’m truly happy for my friends…however, I can’t help but notice that Evans isn’t in the crowd.
At first, I thought he’d just be late, but he didn’t show at all. The ceremony ends and everyone moves to the tables and the music begins. I sit with Heather and Patty but after we’re done eating, they go dance. It’s obvious that I’m no longer in a wedding mood; I hate the control Evans has over me, but I can’t help it. I like him too much.
I stand and walk out. It’s darker and a little chiller—I don’t care, though. I walk away from the music and sit under a tree. The grass is cold underneath me, but I’m too tired to move. I pull off my heels.
I can see Flora and Williams kissing after the crowd chants Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! and everyone cheers. I half-smile…at least she’s happy. I don’t know how long I sit there under the tree before I sense his presence. He comes from behind me and walks around so he’s facing me. I look up at him; he’s wearing a black suit with a black, thin tie. Looking handsome, like always.
Evans grins at me mischievously. “Miss Damien, I’ve been looking for you.”
