Chapter 20: Chapter 20
Rylie's POV
"Oh my God! It's my mom!" I exclaimed silently to Blake. "What do we do? She can't find you here with me. I can't even begin to imagine how bad that will be."
"Well what do we?"
"I don't know. Hide or maybe you could…"
I was cut off by the turning of the door knob.
Oh geez! My mom! I thought exasperatedly.
I watched as the door open as my mom stepped into the room.
My breathing stilled as I cautiously watched the emotions playing on my mom's face. Instead of her eyes to focus on Blake who was beside me, her eyes were roaming round the room instead, like she was looking for something.
That was when I realized that Blake wasn't beside me anymore. How he'd managed to disappear so fast was beyond me.
"Morning Mom," I chirped. "So what are you looking about for?"
"I thought I heard voices. Is there anybody in here with you?"
"Of course not! Pfft! Why would anyone be in my room by this time of the day?" I managed a nervous chuckle.
"Are you sure? I seriously thought I heard voices," she said again still looking around.
"Mom, this is me we're talking about. Would I lie to you?"
"Of course not, honey. I believe you. Well, I guess I'll leave you to it then. Come down for breakfast when you're ready, okay?"
"Okay Mom. I will," I smiled as I watched her go out and locked the door behind her with a sigh of relief.
"That was close," I heard Blake say, startling me.
"Ahh!" I yelped, opening my eyes to find him seated on my bed. "Geez Blake! You scared me half to death. Where were you hiding anyway?"
"Under your bed."
"Oh okay," was all I said as I slipped in bed beside him. "Don't you think it's about time you get going?"
"Why? Anxious to get rid of me?"
"Well yeah. For one, you stayed the whole night here and you still have to get ready for school. Secondly, your morning breath stinks-"
"What?! I don't have morning breath!" he argued.
I chuckled. "You have no idea… Lastly, you heard my mom. I also have to get ready for school which means undressing and I can't have you here while I do that."
"Why not? That'll be a sight for sore eyes," he smirked.
"In your dreams, buddy. Like I said, it's time to go."
I stepped out of bed and stared at him sternly, arms akimbo.
"But how do I get back home?"
"The same way you came. Out the window!"
"The window?"
"Well we can't exactly have you go through the front door now, can we? Come on, out you go!"
"Ugh! Worst girlfriend ever!" he groaned.
"Too bad I'm not really your girlfriend then. Like I said, out the window you go!"
I motioned him towards the window while tapping my foot against the floor. He begrudgingly got out of bed and dragged his feet towards the window.
"Please!" he pleaded with a pout.
"Read my lips, Blake. Nooo!" I replied, emphasis on ‘No’.
He groaned out a “Fine!” before making his way out the window. Still holding onto the ledge, he gave me a mean glare while muttering something like “Killjoy” before disappearing from my sight.
I made to remove my pajamas but instead found myself walking towards the window to see if Blake had made it down okay.
I stole a peek out the window just in time to see Blake plant his feet on the floor. I had no idea how he managed to climb up to my room without a ladder or anything of the sort but I still felt relieved that he'd made it down okay.
I closed the windows and pulled down the curtains so I could have safely undress.
As I did, I thought back to Blake and I couldn't help but smile. I might never admit it to Blake but deep down, a part of me was happy we'd made up. Staying angry at him turned out to be more exhausting than I thought.
Now that that's all over, I can't wait to go back to being fake girlfriend and boyfriend in public and frenemies in private.
*In School*
"Hey girlfriend," I heard Blake say into my left ear. I turned to look at him but he wasn't there.
I heard the scraping of a chair against the floor beside me by my right. Turning to look at him, I rolled my eyes.
"Ha ha, Blake. Very funny."
"What? It's not my fault you're so easy to trick," he shrugged.
"Whatever. What are you doing here anyway? I've never pegged you as the library type."
"What? Can't jocks pay a visit to the library once in a while?"
I gave him a look that said I wasn't buying it.
"Okay. You're right. The only reason I came here was to see you."
"Better. Go on then."
He hesitated as though he was thinking about what to say.
"How would you like to go to a party?" he asked at last.
"A party?" I asked to confirm.
"Yeah. This Friday. My friends on the football team feel I haven't been hanging out with them since you and I got together so it's really important that I'm at this party."
"And the party's on Friday? As in the day after tomorrow."
"Yeah."
"I don't know, Blake. I'm not really the party type," I breathed.
"Come on Rylie. It'll be fun… Besides I kinda already said you would."
"You did what now?!" I slammed my hand against the table.
That got me a stern look and a “Shush!” sign from the librarian. I waved apologetically.
"Now, like I was saying, why would you promise I'll be at a party without my consent?" I whisper-yelled turning to Blake again.
"Well I didn't exactly say you would be there. I said I would be there, which is kind of the same thing."
"Uh no, it isn't."
"It kinda is. You're my girlfriend, Rylie and if I'm at a party and you're not… Well let's just say it'll look bad. It's all about image with us."
I sighed. "Like I said Blake, I don't know. Parties aren't really my scene."
"Come on. It'll be fun. Besides, with you by my side, it'll be harder for girls to hit on me."
"That doesn't seem to have stopped them before," I muttered with a roll of my eyes.
"What? I can't help that I'm naturally charming," he winked.
I scoffed at his remark.
"Come on Rylie. Just come to the party. You won't know until you try."
I pursed my lips in thought and pondered on whether or not to accept Blake's invitation. Eventually I sighed in agreement.
"Alright, I'll go."
"Yes!!" Blake cheered, earning a “Shhh!” from a student nearby. In response, Blake stuck his tongue out at him before looking back at me with a grin.
"Remember though, if the party turns out to be boring, I'm going home and you're coming with me."
"That's fair. But you have nothing to worry about. Logan's parties are always fun."
On hearing that name, I whirled my head around to look at Blake.
"Wait, this party is organized by Logan Moore?"
"Yeah. Why do you ask?"
"Oh! I-it's nothing," I stuttered.
"Are you sure? It doesn't look like nothing. You seem a little pale. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Blake. It's nothing, okay?"
The look on his face told me he didn't believe me but thankfully, he didn't push it.
"Oh well! I suppose I'll just leave you to your nerdy stuff then," Blake mouthed as he stood to leave.
"Reading doesn't make me a nerd, okay?"
"That's what a nerd would say," he retorted.
"Sky doesn't think I'm a nerd," I mumbled to myself.
Unfortunately, Blake heard it.
"What was that you said right now?" he asked, sitting back on the chair.
"What? The thing about me not being a nerd?"
"No. What Sky said."
"Oh that! Well I just said that Sky doesn't think I'm a nerd is all," I shrugged.
"And what does he have to do with anything?" he hissed.
"What do you mean by that? I just said he doesn't think I'm a nerd which I think is really sweet of him. Unlike you of course," I scoffed.
"What? You don't think I'm sweet?"
"Actually I don't. You're mean, you call me names and you teased me just for fun, remember?" I pointed out.
"So basically what you're saying is that Sky is better than me?"
"Well, in a word, yes!" I affirmed.
"You don't actually mean that right?"
"Actually yes. I do."
I turned away from him and picked up my notebook to continue reading, completely ignoring him that is until, he snatched the book from my hands.
"Hey!" I yelled, turning to face him. "Blake, this isn't funny. Give me back my notebook!"
"I won't, until you take back your statement."
"Why should I? I was only saying the truth," I shrugged.
"The truth, huh? Then have fun studying without this notebook."
He stood from the chair and swiftly made his way out of the library. I ran after him, forgetting the rule about not running in the library.
When I eventually caught up to him, I succeeded in tackling him to the ground. There, I struggled to get my notebook back from him.
"Come on Blake! Give it!" I whined, reaching for the notebook.
"I won't let you have it until you admit I'm better than Sky."
"Not in a million years," I retorted.
I reached for the notebook again and just as I grabbed it, Blake flipped us over, switching our position such that he was on top and I was below instead. I lost my grip on the notebook because of the flip.
"Blake, this is so not funny!" I huffed.
"For me, it is. Just say what I want to hear and you can have the notebook back," he waved the book in my face as he spoke.
"Never!" I retorted, trying to grab the book again but it was out of my reach.
I looked back at him and fixed him with a mean glare just as it dawned on me how close we were. He was practically lying on me and our faces were barely inches apart.
Gulping as I realised this, I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out.
Instead I found myself analyzing the features of his face; from his silky brown hair to his steely gray eyes to his heart shaped pink lips…
Every detail about him even to the smallest one, was simply perfect.
I gulped again as I fought the thoughts that were flooding my mind. Blake being this close to me probably wasn't the best because I had a feeling that if he didn't get off me soon, I would be tempted to succumb to the thoughts in my head and kiss him.
My eyes darted to his lips again just as he licked them. That single action of his turned me on more than I ever thought possible.
I glanced back at his eyes and saw an unmistakable flash of desire in them.
Could he be having the same thoughts as me? Was he going to kiss me?
