Chapter 165: Chapter 165

Three years had passed since that day.

As the seasons changed, so did the fortunes and fates of those around them.

Harold Huckington was still in prison, serving his sentence. It turned out he had been involved in other shady dealings as well. His wife filed for divorce a few months after his first arrest, and he didn’t have many visitors over the years. His son, Marvin, never showed up, but months later, he became involved in an assault case. Needless to say, the Huckington family’s name was ruined now.

Christian Callahan remained imprisoned, serving a long sentence for everything that he had done. In prison, he was isolated and despised. His influence and power had been stripped away, so he spent his days in quiet solitude. It was said that the other prisoners avoided him because of his intimidating aura. His sister, Patricia, visited him occasionally. Although she usually did the talking, he would listen quietly without interrupting. Even Patricia wasn’t sure if he was truly sorry for all that he had done. He also never mentioned Camille or Hailey’s names again, as if he was determined to erase them from existence in his mind.

Gregory Callahan, once the formidable patriarch, was sentenced to life in prison. His health deteriorated rapidly behind bars, and he became a shadow of his former self. His control over the family empire crumbled, and the Callahan name became synonymous with scandal and disgrace. Even so, Gregory remained unrepentant and refused to speak to anyone except his daughter, Patricia.

Patricia Callahan returned to the city after finishing her degree, now alone trying to manage the ruins of her family’s legacy. Thankfully, with support from her friends and Hailey, she let go of the company and moved forward with her life. She now worked with troubled youths, helping them find better paths. She sometimes visited her father and brother in prison, talking to them about everything, but she still wasn’t sure if she could forgive them.

Grady Thompson served his time. With help from Michael and Hailey, his son and grandmother received the care that they needed. He also managed to come to good terms with his daughter. To atone for his past actions, he assisted with the investigation and later relocated to a new city, where he started a successful consulting business and became an advocate for whistleblowers. He stayed in touch with Michael from time to time, and it seemed his life was finally back on track.

Joanna McGregor fully recovered from her coma and completed her rehabilitation. After Christian Callahan’s crimes were exposed, she divided her time between running the company and advocacy work, focusing on helping victims of corporate corruption and abuse. Her foundation also provided legal and financial assistance to those in need. Her relationship with Michael had improved significantly since the incident, ironically bringing them closer together.

William McGregor thrived in his role at Haynes-McGregor Industries, focusing on growing the business ethically and sustainably. Later, Michael officially handed over the CEO position to Will. He became a respected industry figure, known for his fairness and innovative approach to things. He and his wife were rumored to be expecting their second child.

John McGregor, the family patriarch, retired from the active business life. Having served his sentence for police bribery, he now lived a quieter life in his private mansion outside the city. He took pride in his children’s accomplishments and had learned to manage his temper. He was much calmer these days, perhaps due to his age.

Diana McGregor devoted herself to philanthropic efforts, expanding the family’s charitable foundation to focus on education and health care. Free from her husband’s shadow after that day when she finally stood up to him, she brought a lot of improvements to underprivileged communities and thus earned widespread recognition for her work.

Luther van Gowen’s health improved significantly after treatment, allowing him to resume his role in the family business. With Hailey’s support, he took the hotel chain to new heights and became a mentor to young entrepreneurs, sharing his knowledge and experience.

Emilia van Gowen dedicated her time to family and charitable activities, supporting her husband in running the business while also becoming active in advocacy work. She later became good friends with Diana McGregor, and the two began attending morning yoga sessions together.

Paul van Gowen excelled in his role within the family business, leading innovative projects and expanding the company’s global reach. His leadership and vision earned him respect within the company and the industry. He once remarked that he had no plans to settle down, as he wanted to focus on his work and making a difference.

Benjamin van Gowen turned his focus to social entrepreneurship, founding a new company dedicated to sustainable and ethical business practices. His company quickly gained a reputation for its commitment to environmental and community well-being. He married his girlfriend shortly after, but said that they weren’t planning to have children just yet.

Samuel McGregor was serving time for his involvement in the hit-and-run accident that had killed Mason Parker 37 years ago. In prison, Samuel dedicated himself to personal redemption, participating in rehabilitation programs and mentoring young inmates. His family, especially his older brother John and sister-in-law Diana, visited him regularly. When speaking to younger inmates, he would sometimes share the story of himself and Pamela Callahan.

Spring had arrived.

Michael sat at his desk, organizing files on his laptop. Having handed over the reins to Will, he was no longer burdened by the responsibilities of running the company.

Using his sharp eye for business and his connections, Michael launched a high-end restaurant that quickly gained tons of praise for its unique menu and exquisite flavors.

Although he stepped down as CEO, Michael remained an active board member and advisor to Haynes-McGregor Industries. His strategic insight and experience were crucial to the company’s continued success.

Most importantly, John McGregor never uttered a word of protest. It seemed that the old man had finally mellowed after all.

Michael’s eyes rested briefly on the framed photograph of him and Hailey from their wedding two years ago.

The expressions on their faces were ones of pure happiness. His bride’s radiant smile still captivated him even now.

Sometimes, he thought that he could just stare at it forever.

But nothing could beat the real thing.

Ah, he really wanted to go see her now.

When he finished his work, Michael sent a quick text message before shutting down his laptop.

He stood up, straightened his tie, and glanced out the window. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom, their soft pink petals fluttering gently to the ground. It was a perfect day to be outside.

Michael left the building and walked towards a familiar destination, his steps taking him to a boulevard lined with cherry blossom trees.

As he walked, the petals drifted down around him, creating a soft, almost ethereal scene. It was a memory brought to life.

At that moment, his thoughts drifted back to the first day of high school when he met Hailey.

When that single petal floated in front of his eyes, signaling the beginning of the cherry blossom tree’s full bloom in the spring.

When a girl his age suddenly walked up to him, her hand clutching the strap of her shoulder bag.

When she, with her long dark hair and beautiful olive-green eyes, asked him what he was doing with a cigarette in an elegant, smooth tone of voice.

-

“It’s none of your business,” he had told her flatly.

“As president of the student council, I’d say it is indeed my business. What’s your name?”

-

That moment was the beginning of everything.

The beginning of his precious first love.

“A penny for your thoughts?”

The familiar, lilting voice snapped Michael out of his reverie.

He was looking up at the sky, watching the cherry blossom petals fall and dance gracefully in the breeze. The moment he heard the voice, he lowered his head to see Hailey herself walking towards him with a warm smile.

Her hair was still long and dark, flowing loosely behind her back. She still had the same striking olive-green eyes, and she still had the same beautiful voice that he remembered so vividly.

Now she wore a loose, floral maternity sundress over her swollen belly. The soft sunlight shone on her, making her look like an ethereal angel coming to greet him.

In that instant, the years seemed to peel away, leaving only the present.

Michael stepped forward and reached out, pulling his wife into a tender embrace. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to her forehead in a gentle kiss.

“Just reminiscing about the day we first met,” he murmured against her hair. “Remembering that stubborn girl who wouldn’t let me slack off for a second.”

Hailey laughed, and it was music to his ears.

He loved hearing her laugh. In fact, hearing her laugh lately made him feel warm inside.

She was happy now. Truly, genuinely happy, and that was more than he could ask for.

“And now look at us,” she said with a smile. “With a new addition to our family.”

She took his hand and laid it over the curve of her belly. She lifted her head to give him a radiant smile, which he returned with equal happiness.

Around them, the cherry blossom petals continued to fall, swirling in the wind and creating a soft, precious scene.

Michael tucked a stray strand of hair behind Hailey’s ear.

“And I can’t wait to meet him soon,” he whispered. “Our son… James McGregor.”
