Chapter 142: Chapter 142

Two days passed like a whirlwind alongside the media frenzy that surrounded Joanna McGregor’s mysterious accident.

As expected, people were cooking up wild theories and speculations of their own. Even the articles, online videos, and internet posts fueled the gossip that was going all around.

Meanwhile, the police investigation still had no tangible evidence pointing to the mastermind behind the crime, which was frustrating the detectives in charge. The identity of the mysterious woman that Hank described seemed to elude them, teasing them with the mystery.

But then all of that changed when the case took a dark turn with Hank’s sudden death in custody.

‘Murder Suspect Hank Turner Killed Under Mysterious Circumstances’ was the headline. Hank Turner, the man who confessed to causing Joanna McGregor’s car accident, was found dead in his cell. Authorities launched an investigation, but all evidence in the case vanished without a trace, which in turn fueled even more wild theories.

But there was another headline that caught the eye of the public.

‘Business Tycoon Arrested: Harold Huckington in Custody’ was the title. Harold Huckington, who was a prominent figure in the industry, was arrested due to an anonymous tip. Evidence of embezzlement and other financial crimes were exposed thanks to a USB drive containing the incriminating files.

Needless to say, Harold Huckington’s reputation and credibility were now down the drain.

Good riddance, if Camille were to be completely honest.

However, Harold Huckington wasn’t her main problem right now.

Camille sat at her office desk, scrolling through the latest headlines on her phone. She trembled as she read each article, knowing very well who was behind these events.

What sent chills down her spine was the news of Hank’s death.

It wasn’t as if she had any sympathy for him or that she condoned what he did, but still, it seemed cruel.

Christian covered his tracks, and he did it too well. His henchman probably thought he could escape the country safely and discreetly, but in the end, Christian betrayed him.

Who was next?

Grady?

No… Christian wouldn’t go that far, right?

Camille shuddered at the mere thought of it. She just hoped that she was overthinking things.

The only consolation came from a recent phone call from her brothers. Their father’s treatment was showing progress, and even Dr. Colmen was optimistic about it, which was definitely good news.

“Hang in there, sis,” Paul’s gentle voice reassured her. “We’ll call again soon.”

Meanwhile, at the police station, it was chaos.

Hank Turner’s death had thrown the investigation into disarray. The detectives did their best to secure whatever evidence was left, but one thing was clear at this point.

Someone with considerable power and influence was pulling the strings in this case, just as Hank had told them that day.

It was most likely the blonde woman he mentioned, the one who had once been part of an influential family. The one who was currently romantically linked to one of the most powerful men in the country.

However, there were several problems with this vague information.

First, their country indeed had a number of influential families that could possibly fit the description, but that was the issue. There wasn’t enough information to narrow it down to a few suspects.

Second, by implicating one of the most powerful men in the country, it meant that the police were going to be in deep water. There was no telling what might happen, and if this mystery man that the blonde woman was connected to decided to retaliate…

…Oh boy. They were probably going to be the next ones to meet Hank Turner’s fate.

But more than that…

Jenkins couldn’t stop thinking about Hank’s words during the interrogation.

What did he mean by the blonde woman formerly belonging to high-class society? Did she leave her family and elope with a man? This kind of case wasn’t exactly rare, so it would make sense.

Or did she perhaps get disowned by her family? That tended to happen too, like when one of the sons or daughters committed crimes and the family no longer wanted anything to do with them due to the shame they brought.

Jenkins had no answers to any of this.

But right now, there was a more pressing issue for him to handle.

“We need to find out who had access to Hank Turner that day,” Jenkins said to the officers as they stood before him, awaiting orders. “I want you to check every visitor log and review all the security footage. Question the guards who were on standby, too. Someone made sure that Hank Turner couldn’t talk, and I need to know what really happened.”

Meanwhile, at the McGregor residence, Michael and his family were in turmoil.

The atmosphere remained tense between them, especially on John’s end, but the news of Hank’s death left them more confused than ever.

“Who would want that man dead?” Diana wondered aloud. “It is suspicious that someone went all the way to eliminate him. What are they trying to hide?”

“What happens after this?” John said gruffly. “Would they go back to questioning Michael now that their main suspect is gone?”

“I’m pretty sure the two detectives know that Michael is innocent,” Will remarked calmly. “We just need to wait until their investigation of Hank Turner’s death is over.”

“This is quite troubling,” Diana muttered. “I feel like there is more to this than we thought.”

“The police better not be slacking off. Otherwise, I’ll have a word with the chief,” John spat.

During all this, Michael remained silent, lost in his thoughts.

Even now, he didn’t know what to think.

The detective’s words kept haunting him. A woman who was once part of an influential family and now romantically linked to a powerful man.

A woman who dyed her hair blonde.

Camille fit the description perfectly.

Michael’s chest tightened at this realization. It was a truth that he tried to deny all this time, but reviewing the description over and over in his head…

…It was unmistakable.

Stepping out of the room quietly, Michael pulled out his cell phone and began to call the police.
