Chapter 124: Chapter 124

Camille leaned back in her seat, feeling her body drain of energy from the shock.

Joanna McGregor?!

How could that be…?

Based on Camille and Michael’s conversation that day, she remembered that he had confided in her that he didn’t know how to talk to his sister, and that their relationship had been strained for years. When they were young, they even hated each other to the point where their parents expressed their disapproval.

As they grew up, the hatred eased, but they still barely spoke to each other.

Even though she knew that Michael didn’t really have a close relationship with Joanna, Camille knew that he would be torn up about the incident right now. The article had deviously inserted a small possibility that Michael might have arranged the accident out of spite for his sister, but Camille knew better than to believe ridiculous gossip like that.

After all, no matter what, Joanna was still his sister. They were still family. Michael would never do something so vile.

Camille checked her messages again. Grady had not replied for a while, so she assumed that he was busy.

He might be even busier this time because of the sudden accident.

But as the article said… was it really an accident, or was it staged?

Camille wanted to believe it was just an accident because if it was staged, that would be scary. Not by Michael, of course. Rather, she knew that businessmen and businesswomen had their share of enemies and competitors, especially if they were famous.

The McGregors and the Callahans, in particular, had avoided many scandals over the years and generally kept a low profile, except for their business accomplishments.

Yet despite their discretion, they were known throughout the city and the country as billionaires with immense power and influence.

So when something of this magnitude happened, they were guaranteed to be in the spotlight. Their business accomplishments were taken for granted because of their reputations, so people didn’t expect much more.

However, scandals and accidents like this would definitely be talked about for days.

If it wasn’t confirmed that it was just an accident, Camille could easily imagine the ridiculous rumors and conspiracy theories circulating online, which was already giving her a headache.

On the other hand, she was also concerned about Joanna’s current state. Even though she had barely met Michael’s older sister, even back in high school, Joanna was still a familiar name, so hearing about this terrible accident was definitely upsetting.

On impulse, Camille tried calling Michael’s private number, but he didn’t answer.

Maybe he was busy with all the chaos. She couldn’t blame him one bit.

She wondered for a moment if she should call Grady as well. In the end, she decided to do so since they had planned to meet this afternoon.

But Grady did not answer his phone either.

Camille suddenly felt helpless. Michael had helped her countless times before, yet when he was the one in need of help, she couldn’t reach out at all. She felt powerless just sitting here, unable to do anything.

But she couldn’t just blow up his phone with hundreds of messages when he was probably in a bad state right now. She didn’t want to add to his stress.

Breakfast forgotten, Camille started watching the official news of the incident, trying to find other videos that might have captured the scene of the accident.

Unfortunately, there was no collected surveillance footage. The CCTV in the area was either broken or didn’t exist.

While she was engrossed in the news, watching several videos of the accident, she failed to notice Christian standing in front of the dining table, staring at her with a somewhat amused look on his face.

“Funny, I never pegged you for a phone addict before, Miss Parker,” he remarked.

His voice made Camille’s head jerk up in surprise.

Then her stomach sank.

She had tried to avoid him lately, but it was impossible since he was practically her boss at the company and she was his personal assistant.

Their work dynamic required them to constantly communicate about schedules, reviews, projects, calls, and collaborations, making it impossible to avoid him altogether.

However, she could still pretend that nothing was wrong as long as they were in a work environment and the topic was work-related.

At home, she made sure to avoid him as much as possible.

But now, it seemed that she was too absorbed in finding out what had happened to Joanna McGregor to remember that she usually left for work much earlier than he did.

“I’m just looking at something,” she replied stiffly before getting up from the table and taking her empty plate with her. She wanted to escape as soon as possible before he tried something with her again.

Yesterday, her father had finally been on the plane to Dr. Colmen’s clinic, and they had just arrived in the early hours of the morning. Her head was already filled with a mix of emotions this morning. She did not want Christian to be part of this chaotic combination.

Christian watched with slight amusement as she rushed to wash the dishes as if it were an emergency. “Slow down, there’s no rush to get to work,” he said almost teasingly.

Camille chose to ignore him.

He expected that to happen, so he tried a different tactic this time.

“Have you seen the news?” he asked casually.

As the words hit her ears, she froze, the tap water running down the clean plate and over her hands. Hastily, she turned off the faucet and returned the clean plate to its proper place.

“Yes,” she replied curtly before walking past him to get her bag from the sofa and leave.

“So you’ve heard about Joanna McGregor’s unfortunate accident.”

She was about to walk out the door when he said this. It was as if he had timed it perfectly.

“How cold,” he teased when she still did not answer. “She’s Michael McGregor’s older sister, you know. Don’t you feel anything about what happened to her?” His expression turned thoughtful as he seemingly mulled over something. “From what I heard, the doctors didn’t think she’d make it. But by some miraculous turn of events, she flatlined for a moment before finally coming back to life. Such happy news, isn’t it? It’s good that nothing bad happened to her.”

His tone was light, as if he were merely chatting about the weather.

It was truly unsettling.

Camille’s hands trembled. “Yes… it is,” she said before finally leaving the place.

She felt a shiver run down her spine for no reason. It felt as if Christian was testing her, but she did not know what.

And she did not want to know.

However, Christian’s words kept echoing in her head, and she finally realized something that she had been too frozen to think about back there.

How did he know that Joanna McGregor had flatlined before coming back to life? All the videos and articles she had read mentioned nothing of that, only that Joanna had fortunately survived the accident. There were no other details.

She suddenly felt like throwing up.
