Chapter 1131: Chapter 1131
When Evangeline just glared at him without saying a word, he made an expression of disbelief. “Come on, you see this, guys? This psycho just broke into my place, and now she’s demanding an apology.”
[I can’t follow this anymore.]
Glancing at the chat scrolling by, he asked, “Don’t tell me you're that bastard Saint of Tionis’s daughter?”
“Aaaarg! Don’t talk about my dad like that!” Evangeline shouted, clearly furious.
Everyone watching suddenly seemed to understand what was going on.
Wherry quickly started analyzing the situation he found himself in. He’d thought she was just a fan of the Saint of Tionis, and had gone on a rant in front of her, yet it turned out she was actually that guy’s daughter.
However, looking at her and then remembering how old Davey was, the pieces didn’t fit together. He was certain that there was no way someone that guy’s age could have a daughter so grown up.
It didn’t make sense. Then again, it wasn’t like that man had ever made sense in the first place.
After sorting out his thoughts, Wherry picked up his phone. “Everyone, this lunatic apparently got a little offended and showed up to fight me IRL. Can you believe this?”
He exaggerated, letting out a crooked grin. He knew the Saint of Tionis was strong, but that didn’t matter to him. In their situation, the one at a disadvantage was actually the reckless brat in front of him. All he had to do was stir up the drama to make it publicly known, play the victim, and ride the wave of public outrage.
“All of this is just because of a few mean comments online? How’d you even get my personal info?”
He continued to paint himself as the victim as much as possible. However, Evangeline wasn’t having it. She was too enraged by the fact that her father had been insulted.
“I mean, come on, isn’t this too much? Public figures always get some flak. You seriously came to kill someone over it?” Thɪs chapter is updatᴇd by N0v3l.Fiɾe.net
“I’m not here to kill you. I just want an apology,” she growled, her voice shaking with fury.
However, Wherry wasn’t done pushing. “Apology? Oh, please, ‘apology’ my ass. This is my life now, folks. So what if he saved the world or whatever? You diss him online and his kid shows up foaming at the mouth.”
[He really is petty for a public figure.]
Of course, the viewers were just fueling the fire to entertain themselves, having no personal involvement.
“Hell no, you crazy bitch ass. Why should I?”
Evangeline didn't know what to say to that.
“Oh? You’re glaring at me now? What’re you gonna do, huh? Trying to intimidate the victim now? Man, how am I supposed to say anything in this goddamn world? What, are you gonna sue me? You know it doesn’t count as defamation without specificity, right?”
Since she looked like a kid, he figured a few clever word plays would probably be enough for her to start bawling her eyes out and run off.
He didn’t know how she’d found his address, but all it took was reading a few nasty comments to make her cry. He was confident he already knew how the interaction would play out.
However, he didn’t truly realize what a volatile state Evangeline was in.
“Huh?” Wherry noticed something was wrong when Evangeline, having completely lost her grip on reason, began unsheathing a black sword from midair.
He could tell something was seriously off. No matter how reckless someone was, he hadn’t thought she'd actually come there to physically attack him. He’d pressed harder because of his pride, and if she suddenly snapped and came at him for real, he wasn’t sure what he’d do.
Sure, he was stronger than most average people, but there was no way he could handle someone emitting the kind of pressure she emanated.
“I’m going to kill you...” she said, as the last thread of her rationality snapped.
Wherry broke into a cold sweat, realizing he might’ve gone way too far provoking her.
In his mind, the police weren’t his best bet at salvation. It was the media. Since he was live-streaming, then maybe if he got it on record and pleaded his case, he could still stick it to that Saint of Tionis asshole even if things went a little south.
He believed what he wanted to believe—so much so that it had become his truth.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go his way.
Just moments before, the chat had been buzzing. Suddenly, it froze, as if everything in the world had stopped.
It wasn’t a technical issue. Instead, it felt more like time itself had stopped, or the space around them was isolated.
Just as Evangeline pointed the tip of her divine dragon sword Twilight at him, a powerful sound burst out. Brilliant white wings unfurled behind her, scattering white feathers throughout the room.
A blue-haired boy suddenly grabbed her arms, restraining her. “Hey! I’ve got her, so hurry up and get that stupid bastard out of here! Damn it, if he wanted to die so badly, he should’ve just jumped into a river or something by himself! Why the hell does he have to drag everyone else into it?!”
“Damn it! If that revelation had come even a second later, we’d be screwed right now.”
“Let go! I said let me go! I’m going to make him apologize! He insulted my dad, and he’s going to pay for it! What did my dad ever do wrong?! Why does he save people only to get trashed for it?! He sacrificed so much to protect Earth, and they don’t know a damn thing!”
Once her pupils turned vertical and vicious Fear began to seep out of her, Wherry collapsed to the ground like his legs had given out.
He had thought that as long as he used the media, he couldn’t be touched. Only then did he realize just how deep of shit he had stepped in.
To Kain, watching Evangeline thrashing and screaming felt almost familiar. Nonetheless, he clung to her desperately, trying to calm her down. “It’s okay, Evangeline! We’ll take care of that bastard, so just calm down for now!”
“No! Let go, Uncle Kain! Let me go, right now!”
“Have you even thought about how much trouble you’ll cause your dad if you lose control here?!”
“I don’t care! He doesn’t even care about me! He just left me and went to the western continent!”
“So that means you’re just gonna snap and go wild?! Pull yourself together! I’m telling you, if you do something to that guy, your dad won’t be able to sleep for days!”
Hearing those words, Evangeline froze in place like someone had flipped a switch.
Her rage had been sharpened like a blade, but Kain couldn't help feeling a bittersweet pang in his heart. He could tell that, despite everything that had happened, she still really cared about Davey.
When she finally let the strength drain from her body, Kain let out a long sigh of relief. He couldn’t even imagine how they would have dealt with the aftermath if she had truly lost control.
Still, he felt so uneasy for some reason.
Kain suddenly remembered a line he’d read recently in a book of proverbs Hyun-Ah had given him.
[Of all days, it had to be today.]
[When luck’s not on your side, even falling over will crack the back of your head.]
He had to believe that nothing else was going to happen today. If nothing else, he knew he had to avoid a situation where that man, the Saint of Tionis, blew his lid.
However, less than four hours after barely managing to calm Evangeline down and hand her over to Hyun-Ah, more trouble began brewing.
An absurd rumor began spreading like wildfire across the internet.
[Streamer Wherry has been found dead. Witnesses claim the perpetrator is a girl who called the Saint of Tionis her father...]
An article with no verified source set the internet ablaze.
Davey, who had come to the western continent to escort the Daughter of Heaven, was having a private audience with the Emperor Contas after she had quietly retreated to her guest room.
“So, Prince. Or should I be calling you Grand Duke now?”
“Whichever you prefer. The title doesn’t really change anything.”
The emperor gave a short chuckle at his calm reply. “May I ask you something?”
“Do you know anything about this incident?”
No official decision had been made yet, which meant revealing the truth would be premature.
In the Contas Empire, there had once been a case where a father proudly strangled his son to death. Then, when the world returned to its original state, that father lost all memories of the act, along with most of these from the previous few years.
The emperor, referring to that incident, asked, “I pride myself on being rather perceptive, you know.”
Davey didn't have a response.
“This doesn’t seem like a simple accident to me. For example, there was the ordeal with Grand Duchess Kathryn... and there have been similar reports popping up all across the continent.”
“What exactly are you trying to say, Your Majesty?”
“You seem to know something, so why not just come clean?”
Davey quietly closed his eyes for a moment. “There are things that cannot be said, even if they are known.”
“And if I insisted on knowing?”
“If you really want to see how things unravel if you do... I won’t stop you.” Davey then asked a question of his own, “If this incident turns out to be the result of some wrongdoing, whose side would Your Majesty choose to stand on?”
The emperor fell silent, contemplating his question.
“The father simply lost his mind for a while. He killed his own son with his bare hands, without even remembering it.”
The emperor still had no response.
“The son must feel wronged, but the father? He’d be even more devastated and grief-stricken.” Davey pressed further. “Is there any way Your Majesty can ensure that neither side ends up carrying that burden?”
In the end, it was about which side to take. It was a question of whether they should protect the ones who were transformed against their will, due to the distortions of the world’s laws, or hold those accountable for the crimes they committed regardless of intention.
Those who had directly witnessed the bizarre cases, people like the emperor, Sullivan of Pallan Empire, Grand Duchess Kathryn, Alberta’s Chancellor Tsuna, and Emperor Deorte of Lyndis already understood that what had happened defied common sense.
“Lend me your wisdom, if you would.”
At his request, the emperor pressed his fingers firmly against his forehead. “It seems similar cases have emerged, even in the Ming Empire.”
“No, that place has another culprit entirely. Actually, once I head there with the Daughter of Heaven, I plan to deal with that scum first. Though I suppose it’s not completely unrelated, since her bodyguards are likely similar cases,” Davey replied calmly, then asked again. “So, I’m just curious, how does Your Majesty truly view this situation?”
The emperor looked at Davey. “You’re a sly one, putting a dilemma on my plate.”
“You will have to make a decision eventually, and it’s not something I’ll be interfering with.”
Hearing his smooth talk, the emperor let out another faint laugh. “Those who must pay... must die.”
After all, the dead would not return.
“That’s your answer?”
“Yes. That’s how I see it.”
While Davey didn’t have the authority, the emperor had the legal power to pass judgment over his nation’s matters. His answer also gave Davey the inspiration for using a certain method.
“That might be salvation, in a way.”
There were many cases where individualities were reserved. It often led to horrifying outcomes, like killing those they loved with their own hands.
If they were to learn the truth and face the crushing weight of what they’d done afterward, maybe death would be the better option for them.
‘They do say when luck’s not on your side, even falling over will crack the back of your head...’
