Chapter 64: Chapter 64
DRESDEN'S POV
"I said put the fucking painting on the left side, not there," I said, fighting hard to keep my cool. Where the fuck did Roberto hire this kind of incompetent worker?
They could not follow simple instructions. So far, setting up a gallery was not the easiest task.
I looked over my shoulder and saw 'Sandro flirting with one of the female workers.
The dude did not even care about the kind of women he mingled with. So far as you've got a pussy, he's in. In fairness, the girl was pretty good-looking, but why the hell is she flirting during my work hours. I walked over to them and looked at her. My gaze was so intense she started squirming. "Get lost. You're fired."
"But sir..." "Dresden."
Both the bimbo and Alessandro started at the same time. "Get out," I said in a dangerously low voice and she bowed her head in shame and walked away. I turned to my brother. "Can you please stop distracting these people? There's a lot of work to be done here in little time and as it is, they're very sluggish. I don't want you adding to it."
"You know, if you weren't my younger brother, I'll have punched you hard. These guys have been working hard for days. This place is perfect, what more do you want? What if after doing all this, the Avatia girl doesn't show up? What? Are you gonna fly to Texas and kidnap her? Or kill innocent people? You've got to calm down, you are overdoing it man. Calm the fuck down."
I fought the urge to face-palm. Maybe I Qasim overdoing it.
"Go home man, I'm gonna continue from here." He said, patting my shoulder.
Yeah right. "You've been flirting since we got here, what makes you think I'm gonna leave this for you to finish?"
"Because I said so. By the way, have you heard from that girl? The hottie...I don't want to waste my energy on anything. Besides, I still have to go to the armory by five. I need to be sure that the guns we bought from the Venezuelans were original. You know how bad their black market is. Might have sent fake weapons. If that's the case, I swear I'm flying to Venezuela tonight. So tell me, are you sure this Avatia girl is gonna show up?"
As much as it irked me that he kept on calling Avatia 'this Avatia girl', I had to admit he had a point. Draya had not called to tell me how things were. With that thought in mind, I excused myself, making sure Alessandro continued with the work and the contractor who stood at a far end, giving out instructions. I took out my phone and dialed Draya's number. The phone rang but she did not pick it up. The nerve of that girl. So now she's ignoring my calls, huh?
I tried calling again, it rang for about seven seconds before she answered.
"Uhh...hey? I'm sorry, Draya's using the bathroom, but you could leave a message." The person on the other end said and my heart stopped beating. The hair on my nape standing.
"Princess?" I asked. I couldn't believe it. After how many months of not hearing that sweet voice, I get to hear it again? I know it. That's Avatia's voice. It's it. "Princess, is that you?" I asked again but got no reply.
There was shuffling at the other end.
"Ava, why did you answer my call? Did the doctor not talk against using phones?" I heard Draya whisper-yell at my girl. I clenched my fist and gritted my teeth.
"I'm sorry, I guess?" Her sweet voice sounded through the phone.
"I'm sorry for getting angry too, I just have a lot in mind. Let me answer this outside, yeah?" Draya spoke calmly this time and there was more shuffling than a door opening and closing. "Mr. Vaughn, for goodness sake, I already told you I would call you when things work out. That was cl "
"Why didn't you let me talk to Avatia?" I asked sternly.
She cleared her throat. "Mr. Vaughn, this is harder than you think. I flew to Texas to help Avatia recover quickly, and now, you want me to bring her back to New York? How would I even do that with her mother around every day? It's hard, sir. I can't." I heard say her voice crack a little.
I ran my fingers through my hair. "Name your price Draya. Anything you want." "It's not about the money, sir. I just can't do it right. Maybe you should just come
over and get her yourself. I've had sleepless nights trying to figure out how to do this. I can't. I just can't." She said and I could feel that she was crying.
To say I wasn't a fan of crying women would be an understatement. "Stop crying Draya."
"But I don't want to lose anyone. I don't want to see the people I love getting hurt. I just want my best friend to get better. To remember me and all the love we shared." She said while sobbing.
I took in a deep breath. "It's fine. I'm gonna come over there myself." I told her, meaning every single word.
"What?" She shrieked.
WRITER'S POV.
"Why do you look so anxious? You've been pacing for a while now. Is everything alright, Draya?" Doctor Nathan asked a worried-looking Draya as he prepared for his afternoon session with Avatia. "I noticed you've been on edge for three days now.
You know, you can always talk to me. I won't bite." He joked but Draya found nothing funny.
She just kept on moving restlessly.
"You're making me dizzy with all that movement. Just tell me already, what's happening? Did you get into trouble with your man? Or you're pregnant?" The doctor teased.
Draya chuckled. "Yeah right. Why would you guess I am pregnant?" The doctor's eyes widened. "Oh my God, you're pregnant?"
"What? Ewww...no way." Draya said so fast, both of them ended up laughing. "But, no, I'm not pregnant."
The doctor looked straight into her eyes as if he was reading her soul. "Then what's the problem Draya. You can always talk to me. Aside from studying cognitive psychology and all, I also studied neurology. I know how the nervous system works. And I know you're very nervous. Spill it out, you never know, I may be of help." The doctor ended up shrugging and giving her an encouraging look.
A confused Draya didn't know if she could open up to the doctor. If she could trust him enough to tell him that one of the most dangerous men in all of America and Italy would be coming over in a few hours, days, or whatever, to take away a certain blonde who happened to have lost her memory because of a tragic incident. "It's Avatia." She blurted out before she could stop herself.
"What about Avatia?" The doctor asked with so much concern but Draya had no idea how to go about all this. "Tell me Draya, is everything alright? You know Avatia's condition, you've got to tell me. Your friend needs help. She needs closure. She needs peace. So go ahead, tell me already so I know what to do."
Draya sighed."Trust me, in this case, there's nothing you can do." "Try me." The doctor pushed.
"Fine. It's about Mr. Vaughn. The guy behind all this." Draya said as she sat on one of the sofas and took off the band that held her hair, letting it loose. She needed some comfort and air.
Doctor Nathan tensed up. "What about him?"
"You've got to promise me you won't freak out or tell Aunt Grace," Draya told him seriously.
Doctor Nathan nodded. "I promise."
"Dresden Vaughn is coming over anytime soon," Draya said in a deadpan.
The doctor's eyes grew wide. "What?"
Draya let out humorless laughter. "Trust me, that was my exact reaction."
"We've got to tell Grace. We need to take Avatia away from here before he comes here. He's a psychopath, isn't he?" The doctor asked, looking even more nervous than Draya."
Draya shook her head. "No way. That's gonna make him mad. He's not as bad as everyone thinks though. And he certainly cares for Ava. He wants to help her. To be honest, now, I think that's what Avatia needs. That's who she needs. Trust me, as he said he's going to come to take her, no one can stop him. You've been trying to help Avatia for weeks, yet she remembers nothing. Let's hope that if Dreidan comes over, a miracle may happen."
I low-key feel like no miracle would happen, just kidding. I hope a miracle happens. I miss Dreidan and Avatia moments. *sighs dreamily* I need a love life too.
