Chapter 35: Chapter 35

Chapter 34:

Sanaya’s P.O.V

It took me a while to realize that the mind-numbing feeling of despair I had felt the first time I’d seen him was completely gone.

Now, looking at that handsome face, those deep blue eyes and that smile, I felt nothing but a slight sense of irritation towards him. Nothing else. It was like, after the initial shock of seeing the face of the man I once love had blown over, I now only felt what I thought I might always feel towards him…annoyance.

“What do you want, Keith?” I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Well, I would to talk but letting me in would be nice.” Keith shifted from one feet to another nervously but the smile was still intact on his face.

“Sana? Who is it-Oh! Keith!” My mother could not have chosen a worse time to check on the door. “Why don’t you come I-”

“No way in hell!” I snapped.

“Sana!” My mother scolded. “It’s rude to keep people waiting outside the house and the entire apartment might just be listening in on you.” Then she turned to Keith. “Come in, beta (son).”

“Thank you, aunty.” Keith smiled his most charming smile at my mother before entering the house.

“Alright, that’s enough.” I stopped him as soon as he was inside the apartment and out of earshot of all our nosy neighbors. “Don’t think I’ll ever let you back into my life or my house. This is as far as you can enter.”

“You’ve changed, Sana.” Keith observed with a frown.

“Everyone changes, big deal.” I threw his attitude back at him, the same way he had told me at the party to get over the past so we can be friends. FRIENDS!

“Can we talk somewhere in private?” He asked nervously, scratching the back of his head.

“I’m afraid I don’t want to talk to you at all.” I told him straight up, my annoyance growing with every second in his presence. “Say what you have to and get lost. I have an appointment with someone.”

“But Sana, you guys were so close…” My mother tried to reason with me when she saw exactly how much my behavior towards Keith had changed.

“Yes, until he left me and never showed up for five years and not to mention that he broke up with me over a stupid text! He wasn’t man enough for a phone call!” I told her irritably.

“Look, Sana,” hearing my nickname from his mouth made me see red but I held on to my anger with iron control. “I’m sorry for being a dick but it’s safe to say that we have both moved on from then. Today, all I wanted to tell you was a message from Asmara-”

“Oh, wow!” I snapped at him. “First she tries to throw herself at my boyfriend and when that fails she sends you?”

“Wait! Boyfriend?” My mother’s jaw all but hit the ground but both of us ignored her.

“What, you’re her lanky now?” I mocked.

“I’m her Scribt!” Keith stomped his foot on the floor like a child.

“Scribt?” My mother chimed once again but was ignored.

“Ah! That’s why you were lurking around in her party.”

And that was when it registered what he had just said. Scribt! Holy fuck! So that’s why he was at the party. He arrived with Asmara!

“When exactly did you become her Scribt?” I asked him suspiciously.

“Five years ago.” Keith shook his head. “Why is that relevant anyway?”

Five years ago! The words rang in my head over and over again as did Lancelin’s warning.

Most Incubi can manipulate but she takes manipulation to a whole new level. To a protector, she’s a damsel in distress. To a knight, she’s a Queen. To any follower, she’s a leader. She’s everything you want her to be.

So that’s why he left me. Because Asmara managed to seduce his pants off. Fucking bitch!

“Get the fuck out of my house before I kill you!” I sneered at the manwhore. “You lying, cheating bastard!”

“Look, I just want to warn you to stay away from Lancelin.” He sighed. “I know I was wrong but please just let the past be in the past.”

“Who do you think you are trying to lecture me?” I asked him incredulously. “And as for the past, I’ve already flushed it down the toilet along with the ring you gave me.”

“You flushed that ring down the toilet?” Keith looked at me with eyes as huge as saucers, his voice a shrill scream. “It coasted a fortune!”

“Funny how the price is the first thing you remembered. Well, if you’re so attached to it, why don’t you climb down to the gutters, where you belong?” I folded my arms across my chest. “And tell your slut of a mistress that I’m never leaving Lancelin. I love him and her stupid little games aren’t enough to separate us.”

“You don’t get it, do you?” Keith shook his head. “What if I tell you Lancelin’s life might be in danger?”

“Then tell her that Lancelin Eustein is more than capable of taking care of himself and the woman he loves.”

All heads turned towards the open door to my apartment to find Lance standing there with his arms folded across his chest.

Keith visibly paled upon seeing him and before any of us could say anything, he beelined for the door and was out of our reach within seconds, bounding down the stairs like a madman.

“Coward!” I snapped at him. How could I have ever loved such a spineless monkey?

“Most people have that effect when they see me.” Lance unfolded his arms and stepped into my apartment and I all but jumped into his arms.

“Lance!” I wrapped my arms around his wide shoulders, holding on for dear life as fear took over once again from the dream I had this morning as well as Keith’s warnings.

“It’s alright,” Lance reassured me by wrapping his arms around the small of my back. “I’m alright and I swear I won’t let anything happen to you.”

“I know.” I breathed a sigh of relief and reluctantly let go of him so my mother doesn’t freak out. But then I realized that it might already be too late.

“Boyfriend? Scribt?” My mother narrowed her eyes at Lance and me. “When exactly were you going to tell me that you were dating an Incubus?”

And here I thought this day couldn’t be more surprising.

“How do you know about us Incubi?” Lance asked my mother in all politeness but there was an edge to his voice that demanded an answer.

I would’ve been upset that Lancelin was using his authoritative tone at my mother but it was an important question if someone was going around telling people that Incubi existed. The supernatural world must be kept a secret from humans, at least in this dimension. Or scientists would love to cut them open and experiment on them. It wasn’t that the supernatural were easy prey, but they had their vulnerable too. Elderly and children who were more susceptible to the dangerous weapons built by us humans.

“Acelin told me a couple years ago.” Mother said calmly. “Trust me, I didn’t go babbling around about such confidential information. But I was getting suspicious that Sana might be working with the wrong kind of people. It was a feeling I had whenever I met Acelin.”

I could understand what my mother meant by the odd sensation she felt. Most humans felt a tingling at the back of their neck when in contact with a powerful Incubus or a feeling like they should do exactly what they told them to do. It was the raw power rubbing up against their senses. I had never really felt their power that strongly, as Acelin had once told me. It was because of this weird immunity I seemed to have against their predatory charm. But my mother had felt it and Keith most definitely had.

“Initially I thought that he was a mob boss or something and I went to confront him about it.” My mother continued. “But Acelin was very nice about it and didn’t get angry at my accusations. Instead he told me the truth.”

“You seem to have handled it pretty well.” Lancelin commented. “But you don’t have to worry. I won’t harm your daughter and neither am I using her as a feed.”

“I’m aware.” Mother sighed. “Acelin spoke very highly of you while describing your kind. I just…I want Sana to be happy and if she thinks she can be happy with you, then so be it. She’s young still; plenty of time to change her mind.”

I didn’t have to look at Lancelin to know he was holding back a laugh. Instead, he simply gave her a polite smile and said “Indeed.”

“Mom, Lance and I are going out for a bit.” I told her, taking Lance’s hand in mine. “I’ll be back before midnight.”

“Be careful, both of you. You’re responsible adults so I don’t have to tell you what you should and shouldn’t be doing.” She waved us off and in her language, reminded me that she was my mother and no matter how old I get, she would always think I’m immature and irresponsible.

I sighed and exited the door with Lance, my mood instantly lightening as we bounded down the staircase. And just before we went out of earshot, my mother just had to add. “Remember to use protection!”

Someone kill me now!
