Chapter 12: Revelation

Anaya's P.O.V:

The feeling that I'd messed with something I shouldn't have finally set in as the temperature in the room kept dropping enough to freeze.

Lancelot's back was still turned to me, and although I couldn't see his face, I had a feeling it wasn't going to be anything good. The women all around the room seemed to be frozen in place enthralled as they kept staring at his face, their eyes wide and mouth wide open as they looked at Lancelot. And then suddenly, their eyes changed, becoming void of any emotion.

Then I heard Lancelot speak, in a voice I've never heard before. A voice so cold it made me shiver all over again.

"Leave this room and forget you came here today. You will come again when called, if and when I need you."

And then, as if in a trance all fifteen of them walked out in perfect synchronization, their eyes dull like they weren't even human but robots on autopilot. One by one, they all left the room, not even one of them breaking order. It was when the last of them had walked out of the waiting area and into the elevator that Lancelot finally turned to face me. I gasped; my heart about to beat out of my chest.

Lancelot's signature golden eyes were now a deep, dark red. No pupils, no iris. When he spoke this time, it was harsher, colder and more menacing than when he'd spoken to those women.

“What do you think you were doing, Anaya?"

His voice…I’ve never heard anyone sound like that…it couldn’t possibly be human.

I scrambled back from my desk, but I’d forgotten that my chair was right behind me. I ended up in tripping and seated on the chair with the wall behind me and the desk to one side as Lancelot came up from the other. My heart felt like a merciless tattoo on my chest as I suppressed a scream. Lancelot’s eyes, the way the temperature in the room kept dropping…this wasn’t possible! How could he do all that?

“Y-yo-u n-not h-hum-an!” I managed to squeak out, perspiration breaking out on my forehead even though my breath clouded in front of my face.

“Damn right I’m not!” Lancelot was so close…getting closer by the second as he took slow measured steps towards me…and I felt like my heart was about to give out.

I let out a scream just as Lancelot came to stand in front of me, my knees brushing his legs…and the elevator doors opened behind him.

“Lance!”

A sudden sense of relief hit my chest at Antony’s voice before it was violently crushed by his next words.

“We do not hurt the innocent, Lance.”

We. Antony had said we, as in he too wasn’t human. As if he too was like this monster standing in front of me.

And then…Mary walked out of the elevator before it closed and came to stand behind Antony.

A moment of stunned calm descended over me as I looked between the two brothers and then turned to Mary; the overdose of shock causing me to go momentarily numb. Lancelot was turned away from me, facing Antony and Mary stood timidly behind Ace, looking at the ground with her shoulders rigid.

I watched as Ace and Lance talked to each other, making sharp gestures. But I couldn’t hear anything; even though I saw their lips move. And just as suddenly, I saw black dots appear in my vision, until that darkness swallowed everything.

****

I opened my eyes with a start.

The ceiling was higher than that in my room or Mary’s and the bed was humongous. The comforters were pure black silk and the room was huge and devoid of any furnishing except for the bed, a bedside table and a wardrobe. The room didn’t have any windows and even the color was dark and gloomy of a deep steel gray.

I sat up on the bed, alone and scared, trying to understand what was going on around me. The man I’ve been working for, for the past three years was some kind of monster. And he wasn’t the only one. Even his brother, Lancelot, was a monster and from the looks of it, they had something to do with women. But more confusing was the fact that, in the three years and two weeks I’d worked for these monsters, why hadn’t anyone else seen or known the truth.

“Anna?”

I looked up at Mary as she entered the room, closing the door behind her, and all my doubts were replaced with anger. “You knew!” I spat.

“Anna, calm down,” Mary held up her hands in surrender as she came forward with slow measured steps. “I can explain if you let me.”

“Explain what? That Ace and Lancelot are some kind of monsters? Well thanks for the info, I already figured that out!” I turned my head to the side, not wanting to look at the traitor’s face.

How could she? We’ve been friends for over five years and yet she didn’t tell me such an important thing when she found out about it. Was this why she kept defending the brothers last night when I went over to her apartment? The question wanted to burst out of me but I grit my teeth together to keep it in.

“Incubus.” Mary whispered in a small voice that I doubted she even said anything.

“What?” I turned to her with a scowl.

She cleared her throat before answering. “Incubus.”She told me hesitantly. “They’re not monsters, they’re Incubus.”

“What the Hell is that supposed to mean?” I ask her incredulously.

“Well,” she scratched the back of her head awkwardly. “It means that they are demons, but Incubus quite literally translates to sex demons.”

I stared at Mary for a good five minutes, before I fell back on the bed laughing like a maniac.

“S-sex d-em-ons!” I managed to say in between fits of laughter.

I never thought that such a situation could turn out to be this hilarious. Sex demons? For God’s sake, sex demons! I wiped away tears that had formed at the corner of my eyes due to my uncontrolled laughter. It still bubbled out of me, but I tried to keep it contained so I could ask Mary about it.

“So,” I said as I sat back up and looked at her. “Explain to me what exactly is a sex demon?”

Sighing, Mary can over to the bed and chose to stand beside it rather than sit on it. “Incubus is a species of demons that feed on the life force of humans. Male Incubi can only feed from only a female human and the females gain strength only from a human male. That’s why Lancelot keeps sleeping around, it helps him gain strength.”

“And what happened to us humans when they’ve sucked out all our life force?” I asked, although I knew what the answer is going to be. Mary was dead serious, and the display of power I’ve seen from Lancelot today was no joke either. This whole situation was, mind my language, seriously fucked up.

“They die.” Mary confirmed. “But Incubi aren’t allowed to drain a human completely, that’s why Ace and Lancelot never sleep with the same person twice. It’s against their rules and it could also lead to their discovery.”

“Then why not let them get discovered? Why guard their secret?” I asked.

“Because demon or not, they’re still people Anna.” Mary pleaded with me to understand. “Humans have slaughtered thousands in the name of war; we slaughter animal’s everyday just so we can eat a nice steak for dinner. Who are we to judge them when we treat other creatures the same?” Mary sighed. “And besides, Incubi don’t just sit around and fuck other people, they’re very powerful. What you say today was only about one percent of what Lancelot could do. They’re very strong and can manipulate an entire nation to do their bidding, and those are only two things they can do. Even if I ousted their secret, do you think anyone can get close enough to them to do something about it?”

I stayed silent, my knees drawn to my chest and my arms wrapped around my knees. I know that what I’d seen wasn’t normal and what Mary said was making a Hell lot of sense, but still by mind was having trouble processing it all.

“I’ll leave you alone for now, but if you need me, I’ll be right outside that door.” Mary told me and turned to leave.

“How do you come to know so much about them?” I asked when she was near the door, but I didn’t move from my position, nor did I look at her. I just didn’t have the strength to.

Mary didn’t answer for a long time, but when she did, I felt dread clutch at my heart once again.

“Because I’m Antony’s Scribt…and now, you’re Lancelot’s…”
