Chapter 193: Chapter 193
Skylar Hughes knew full well why Mrs. Langdon came, and dealt with her cautiously.
Mrs. Langdon smiled at her, "You don’t need to worry, I just came by to have a look today."
Mrs. Langdon said, "This house was part of my dowry; it’s still in my name. No one has lived here for so many years. I’m certainly happy that you could move in."
Skylar’s face turned stiff.
Angus never mentioned that the house belonged to his mother.
"I’m sorry, Aunt Langdon, I..."
"No, no, it’s okay, don’t misunderstand, I have no intention of asking you to leave."
Mrs. Langdon said, "My son, you see, is cheerful and generous, and he’s quite simple-minded. Playing mind games won’t work against those girls full of tricks. It’s nice that he knows you, so if he encounters those tricky ones in the future, as a friend, you can help him out."
Isn’t she just saying I’m full of tricks?
Skylar took a deep breath, "Aunt Langdon, you’ve really misunderstood, this house is rented to me by Angus, I..."
"Oh? Rented to you? This child, how could he charge a friend rent? How much did you pay him? I’ll transfer it to you now, so you can live here without worry and you won’t need to pay rent in the future, as long as my son is happy..."
In other words, you’re just something to keep my son happy.
Skylar couldn’t even muster a fake smile.
She called it rent, but she hadn’t paid a single penny and didn’t intend to.
Right now, she was even living off Angus’s money for her daily expenses.
Skylar couldn’t bear it any longer and said with pride, "Aunt, I’m from a decent family too, you can’t insult me , I’m just staying temporarily..."
Mrs. Langdon sneered inside, thinking if she really had pride, she wouldn’t have moved in.
Her son was simple-minded and was treated like an easy target, where did Skylar get the confidence to think she could manipulate others as she pleased?
Skylar moved out of the house that very day and called Angus.
"I’m moving out by my own choice, it has nothing to do with Aunt Langdon, Angus, don’t get into a fight with her over this."
Skylar would have been better off not saying anything; by saying this, wasn’t she just telling Angus his mom was the reason she was driven away?
I’m a girl with dignity, and I left because I refuse to be humiliated.
Angus was so furious that he rushed back to confront Mrs. Langdon.
"Mom, how could you drive Skylar away? Do you know she has nowhere to go now? If you kick her out, where will she go?"
"She still has her parents, why should you worry about where she goes?"
Mrs. Langdon sneered, "That girl is full of tricks, you should stay away from her."
"Mom, Skylar is a kind girl, even though..."
Angus paused, "I know she lied to me about some things, but it’s only because she likes me too much."
It’s not that Mrs. Langdon looked down on her son, but a girl like Skylar, all ambition and no ability, her target couldn’t possibly be just Angus.
But now Angus was saying Skylar liked him, it must be because Skylar gave Angus such an impression.
Now she’s provoking Angus to stir things up at home, relying on the fact that Angus is the only son of the Langdon Family and believes everyone will eventually yield to his persistence.
She couldn’t let Skylar get her way by causing a rift between her and her son.
One must admit, Skylar always underestimated others and thought she could play everyone with her wits.
But she neglected that a woman who could securely hold her position as a nobleman’s wife couldn’t be without some strategies.
Mrs. Langdon then smiled gently, "If you really believe she likes you, why don’t you go ask her if she really does? Tell her, as long as she says she likes you, I’ll immediately agree to your marriage. If she doesn’t say it..."
Mrs. Langdon chuckled, "Hehe, I believe my son is not that foolish."
Angus really went to ask Skylar. ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴠɪsɪᴛ 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭•𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦•𝘯𝘦𝘵
Skylar’s reaction was exactly as Mrs. Langdon had expected, neither admitting nor denying.
Seeing this, Angus relayed his mother’s words, "My mom said, if you really like me, we can have the wedding now, and you’d be the daughter-in-law of the Langdon Family, Skylar, aren’t you happy?"
Skylar’s face darkened.
"Angus, I know I’m not worthy of you, Aunt Langdon surely thinks so too, and now with her saying this, I’m scared."
Skylar looked pitiful, but this time Angus wasn’t so easily swayed.
He wore a cold expression, "So you’re saying you don’t like me, is that it?"
Angus, "Then you do like me?"
Angus, "Then do you like me or not?"
Under Angus’s pressing, Skylar became flustered and couldn’t answer at all.
Angus stood up, looking at Skylar coldly, "Skylar Hughes, I can’t believe I was fooled by a woman like you?"
Even when Skylar’s reputation was in tatters, he still believed her to be simple and innocent.
Skylar was stunned, "Angus, I..."
Angus turned hostile instantly, "Skylar Hughes, don’t come looking for me again."
Skylar looked utterly incredulous, "Angus, how can you treat me ?"
"Then let me ask you, do you like me? Do you want to marry me?"
Skylar couldn’t give an answer.
Angus said, "My mom was right. You didn’t lie to me because you like me, but because you wanted to use me. That’s why you never deny or admit liking me. People say you’re scheming, and I didn’t believe them, thinking they were wrong. Now I see, I’m the blind one, not them."
Paige Sterling might be very blunt, but she never resorts to mind games; whatever she wants to do is straightforward and clear.
It’s different with Skylar; she plays mind games skillfully.
As Angus thought about how he was tricked by Skylar all this time, he couldn’t help but feel angry. He genuinely stopped contacting Skylar.
Skylar called him only to find out she’d been blocked.
After that, Paige noticed that Angus always looked at her in a strange way.
Paige would rather he tease her like he used to than watch her from the shadows.
That night as she headed home, Angus kept driving behind her.
Paige couldn’t take it anymore, walked over, yanked open the car door, and stared coldly at Angus, "Angus, why are you following me?"
Angus looked embarrassed, "It’s late, I’m just afraid it’s not safe for a girl alone..."
"Are you crazy? I’m more worried about your safety than mine."
There really weren’t many people daring to mess with her these days; every time she walked down the street, she felt like she was the boss of the street.
