Chapter 125: Chapter 125
The director has mentioned that we can’t afford to offend Miss Sterling.
Even though she appears to be merely a tech company owner now, national scientific institutions have recognized Paige Sterling’s capabilities and are intent on integrating her into their ranks.
A person needed by the state at all times has an unfathomably brilliant future ahead.
Paige Sterling said calmly, "I’m at the police station now; something’s happened."
Secretary Sawyer immediately said, "Miss Sterling! I’ll come over right away!"
A call from Paige Sterling indicated the situation was significant, so Secretary Sawyer dared not delay and hurried to the police station.
He called Director Yates on the way.
Section Chief Abbott and Old Mrs. Hale still didn’t take it seriously, thinking Paige Sterling was just putting on airs.
Old Mrs. Hale sneered, "I’ve lived long enough not to be scared easily. Miss Sterling, I advise you to behave; don’t bring undue suffering upon yourself. The Hale Family isn’t something you can easily mess with. Now that something’s happened, it’s useless for you to seek anyone’s help."
However, unexpectedly, as soon as Old Mrs. Hale finished speaking, Secretary Sawyer rushed in, drenched in sweat, and clearly in a hurry.
He was Director Yates’ favorite, someone Section Chief Abbott usually buttered up to.
So he immediately stood up, "Secretary Sawyer, why are you at the bureau? Is there an instruction from Director Yates?"
Secretary Sawyer immediately asked, "Where is Miss Sterling?"
Section Chief Abbott asked blankly, "Which Miss Sterling?"
"Who else?" Secretary Sawyer had already spotted Paige Sterling by then, hurriedly bypassed Section Chief Abbott, and approached Paige Sterling, "Miss Sterling, I’m sorry I’m late, are you alright?" ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ 𝔫𝔬𝔳𝔢𝔩~𝔣𝔦𝔯𝔢~𝔫𝔢𝔱
Paige said, "You didn’t come late."
She pointed at Section Chief Abbott and Old Mrs. Hale, "I feel I’ve been treated unfairly. Now that you’re here, see for yourself what should be done."
Secretary Sawyer quickly grasped the situation, looking slightly awkward.
However, this matter still required Director Yates to handle personally, as he was Section Chief Sawyer’s superior.
"Director Yates is on his way back, Miss Sterling, don’t worry, he will definitely give you a fair handling!"
Section Chief Abbott and Old Mrs. Hale were bewildered.
Paige Sterling was merely a woman who rose to power through men; how could such a woman have a connection with the director?
Even the Hale Family failed to establish this connection.
Could Paige Sterling have another background?
Section Chief Abbott immediately pulled Secretary Sawyer aside, whispering, "Secretary Sawyer, what’s going on? Does this woman have a significant backing?"
If that’s the case, didn’t he just...
Thinking of this, cold sweat broke out on Section Chief Abbott.
Secretary Sawyer was now also furious, as Director Yates had put so much effort into maintaining a good relationship with Paige Sterling, even receiving military vests from Penson at discounted rates for the bureau. It could be said that Director Yates owed Paige Sterling a major favor.
And yet, Section Chief Sawyer had offended her directly.
Secretary Sawyer, annoyed, said, "Backing? Everyone knows her background, don’t you?"
Section Chief Abbott was dumbfounded, "Isn’t she just the chairman of Penson?"
"You do know she’s the chairman of Penson, don’t you?"
Section Chief Abbott felt awkward, "But I’ve heard she’s just a nominal chairman, and the real power isn’t in her hands. She’s just climbed up by relying on a man; why should we fear her?"
Secretary Sawyer wanted to sneer.
"Which eye of yours saw her relying on a man to rise?"
Although he is a man, he had to admit most men have a weakness – they like to attribute women’s accomplishments to men and inherently look down on women, unaware that when women become formidable, it has nothing to do with men.
As a man, he greatly admired Paige Sterling.
While engrossed in their conversation, Director Yates entered with a stern face, and both Section Chief Abbott and Old Mrs. Hale greeted him warmly.
Director Yates didn’t even glance at them and instead headed directly to Paige Sterling, where his expression instantly turned warm.
"Come, have a seat first."
He then instructed Secretary Sawyer, "Pour a cup of tea for Miss Sterling."
Secretary Sawyer quickly poured tea for both Paige Sterling and Director Yates.
Then, Director Yates said, "Let me see the investigation results."
Secretary Sawyer promptly passed the results to Director Yates.
After glancing through them, Director Yates’s face grew colder, "Are all the materials here?"
Section Chief Abbott immediately handed over Helen Hale’s injury report.
"Director, this is Helen Hale’s injury report. She has been severely injured by Paige Sterling. This Paige Sterling is too ruthless. We shouldn’t tolerate such a person..."
Section Chief Abbott was attempting to convey to Director Yates that Paige Sterling couldn’t be protected.
But Director Yates ignored him and asked the policeman handling the case, "Have the results been thoroughly investigated?"
"Pretty much, all the evidence is here."
"Then tell me, according to these results, what should be done?"
Judging by Director Yates’s demeanor towards Paige Sterling, the policeman had no hesitation, "Although Miss Sterling acted harshly, she was vastly outnumbered and acted in self-defense. Conversely, Miss Hale, despite being injured, legally speaking, if Miss Sterling pursues it, Miss Hale could face additional charges..."
Old Mrs. Hale broke out in a cold sweat upon hearing the officer insinuate Helen Hale might end up in jail.
How could the Hale Family have a daughter who ends up in jail?
Old Mrs. Hale quickly protested, "That’s not how it is! This woman sought revenge against my granddaughter! My granddaughter did nothing wrong..."
Nevertheless, Director Yates appeared to ignore Old Mrs. Hale, for there was no need to argue with someone being unreasonable; rules and laws stood here, not depending on her whims.
The Hale Family? So what about the Hale Family?
Many people have connections in this world. Does the Hale Family think they can overshadow everything?
He said to Paige Sterling, "Miss Sterling, I’ve reviewed the materials. It’s my subordinates’ mishandling that wronged you. Rest assured, I will provide an explanation for you, handling matters as they should be."
In a gesture to show resolve, Director Yates began dealing with Section Chief Abbott in front of Paige Sterling.
"Dismiss and investigate Section Chief Abbott."
Section Chief Abbott’s eyes widened, "No, Director Yates, why? What did I do wrong?"
Director Yates looked at Section Chief Abbott with eyes like a clear mirror.
Section Chief Abbott immediately comprehended, feeling a chill over his heart.
He knew he had really kicked the hornet’s nest this time.
"Director Yates, I only wanted to resolve this case quickly. I, I, I, I..."
Director Yates coldly retorted, "No need to convince me, speak to the Discipline Inspection Committee."
Mentioning the Discipline Inspection Committee indicated Director Yates genuinely couldn’t tolerate him anymore, likely having complete evidence to bring him down.
Section Chief Abbott immediately fell silent, his knees buckling, landing him on the ground.
It’s over, it’s over.
Director Yates still felt this wasn’t enough to quell Paige Sterling’s anger, saying, "Notify the tax bureau to audit Apex’s taxes."
