Chapter 47.

Believe me, there are ricochets and rebounds all over the room. There seems to be confusion all over especially between Mrs. Jones and Dr. Williams.

I know she talked about him, meaning they knew each other in the past. Well, I wouldn’t know what Williams knew or maybe what he was made to believe by God knows who because he is more surprised than she is.

I feel awkward, I feel out of place and I just want to walk away. She supports me to sit on the only available settee and then the two of them resort to a very tight and painful hug. Something is going on here and I want to know exactly what that is.

When they break the hug, the man finally gets his eyes landing on me and when she looks back at Mrs. Jones, I see glassy eyes and within short seconds, they are locked in a hug again.

Ever seen the elderly sob? Well, this particular day, I have the privilege of seeing that. Stuck in a hug and sobbing like babies, the feeling is intense and the only thing I can do is to try and walk out. She told me earlier that everyone was waiting for me outside and thus, it would be better if I walk my lazy self to them.

Based on what she told me about Williams, I have no idea what took place or how they both ended up apart but right about now, I can feel sweet old feelings have been revitalized and rejuvenated. I stand up discreetly and walk stealthily to the door. I try opening the heavy wooden door but it doesn’t budge.

‘’The door is automatic.’’ The doctor says startling me. ‘’It opens and closes when it senses someone is about to come in or go out but for now, the door is manually closed. Please have a seat as I talk to her.’’ I don’t respond at all. I politely walk back to the chesterfield and sit my ass on the soft object.

‘’Remember the guy I told you about?’’ She halts the hug and she asks me once I am back on the settee and I nod. ‘’This is him. I know you already know that.’’

‘’Sure.’’

‘’What happened, beautiful?’’ she smiles at that. ‘’I was told you died. I have looked for you for over twenty years. They informed me that you committed suicide and killed our baby in your stomach. What happened? Is this really you? Where did you come from, beautiful?’’ He asks once again and I vividly remember that that’s how the son calls me. He must have inherited that from the father.

‘’Well, it is a very long story. Do you want to hear about it in the hospital? Maybe we should sit somewhere when you are off duty. At least I am human and I wouldn’t want to take a doctor away from his post just because I want to talk about something that happened over twenty years ago, okay?’’

‘’You never stopped being wise. I …’’ she smiles but doesn’t say a single word. I agree with him, she is a very wise woman.

After a short chat, she leads me to the door and the door opens automatically. Big, evil and wicked eyes are at the door. She is here.

Mrs. Williams is here.

An awkward clap comes from her. ‘’Williams you are here entertaining this bitch when our son is supposed to be having his wedding in a few hours?’’ I swear if Mrs. Jones wasn’t holding me I would have fallen down. He is finally getting married? To Diana? Wow! I have lost him.

‘’Really? You are forcing our son to marry someone he doesn’t love? You shouldn’t do that, Jenna. You and I know how our marriage has been. Simply because I never and I would never love you. I have been putting up with you for way too long but now I am tired.’’ I didn’t know about that. They seem like one of those perfect couples.

‘’You are?’’ she asks sarcastically and smiles awkwardly. ‘’Well, learn to do better because I am here to stay. I will never leave you, William. Therefore,’’ she pauses and bursts out a peal of evil laughter. ‘’You and I are stuck forever. Forever, Williams!’’

I tense at her sound and Mrs. Jones leads me out stealthily. When we get to the car, I request them to take me to Harry’s house for the last time. I want to call him but I am told I requested them to take back the phone he had bought me to him. The only option that I am left with is to go there.

Luke and Tabby seem to be against it but his mum says she will support me to do whatever will bring peace and happiness in my life. She says she wants to be dropped home first before we drive there and she cautions her son to be very careful.

When I ask her why she is being very virtuous and indulgent towards me, she tells me that she really suffered from her pregnancy and that she wouldn’t wanna see anyone else, not even a stranger or her worst enemy going through half what she went through. I am curious and would like to hear more about that. I think there’s more to this story than meets the eye.

I wanna know how she conquered it. How she got to where she is today and how she managed to beat all odds in this foul society.

‘’You know I was really happy when I walked out without that woman noticing me. I think it’s high time I start sending her gifts once again and the perfect timing will be at the wedding. I will make sure to do it.’’

‘’Why would you do that? My palm covers my mouth when I remember something. ‘’Don’t tell me … Was she the evil friend?’’

‘’Your guess is right, baby girl. She was a malevolent friend. She made my life a living hell but, you go see your boyfriend. I will speak to you later.’’ She says and alights without another word. I bet everyone in the car is wondering what the two of us are talking about.

Luke offers to drive me but he bluntly says he doesn’t want Tabby and Emmy to come with us. I am literally very tired but I have to be strong for me and my seraph.

I feel delighted to know Luke. He is empirically acting like my brother, Job. I miss him. I am placing him there, a brother. He has been there for me through thick and thin. He has made sure I am okay each time.

I feel my eyes burning with tears and I smile bitterly when I remember that the wedding is in a few hours. This guy is going to make me a bitter person.

‘’Do you think that woman said whatever she said just to piss me off?’’ I ask Tabby who by the way she is looking at me, she seems to be blank.

‘’Which woman?’’

‘’Harry’s mum was at the hospital and she rubbed it in my face that there is going to be a marriage between Diana and Harry in a few hours. You know that’s the reason I am headed there to try and stop the wedding. He has to know that he’s going to be a dad so that if he still wants to go ahead with this marriage it will be purely on his conscience and not mine.’’

‘’That woman is evil, baby girl. I am honestly very sure that she said that to piss you off. Let’s get going and you will be sure in less than an hour.’’

‘’Sure, you guys keep us posted.’’

‘’Of course, we will do,’’ Luke says with a smile and I smile back.

‘’Why don’t you let them come?’’ I ask once he pulls out of their compound and he shakes his head.

‘’Tabby has to go back to work. I don’t want her being fired. She loves her job so much and I respect that. Emmy has exams to study for but she very much likes company hence, she may forget to do that.’’

‘’Woah!’’ I exclaim politely. ‘’you care so much about them, don’t you?’’

‘’I do. Emmy is the only sister I have after mum lost our first sister.’’ My mouth hangs open. I feel razors cutting through my stomach but I stay still maintaining my cool. ‘’Tabby is an amazing woman who I appreciate so much. I want her to be the woman of my entire life since she is the woman of my dreams. I figuratively love Tabby so much.’’

‘’Wow, I like your enthusiasm. Does her mum know?’’

‘’Not yet. But we’re planning to go home sooner and see her mum. Tell her about us and ask for her blessings. I know she will do it for us.’’

‘’She will. My godmother is a good woman she will definitely give you her blessings and I know you guys will live happily ever after.’’

‘’Thanks.’’ He says with a smile. ‘’I want that for you too but obviously not with that arrogant spoilt brat. He should go marry that sick girl and stay away from you.’’ My eyes sting with tears and I blink several times to keep them at arm's length.

Luke looks at me briefly when I don’t respond to his comment. ‘’I am sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I am and will always be with you, supporting all your decisions.’’

I force a smile. He is right. If the news I am going to give him will not change him, then I will be sure that he doesn’t love me. ‘’No need to worry, Luke, I will be fine.’’

‘’That’s what I want. If we will not be fruitful today, I will make sure to stand with you always. Do not be afraid.’’

We’re cruising the clear road to Mr. Williams's home and Luke is such a driver. He is going like there’s no tomorrow and at some point, I have to remind him that I am pregnant therefore, he should drive with care. He laughs it off making me frown.

We’re at the gate almost half an hour later and when I ask the gateman to let me in, he says he has clear instructions not to let me in. He says that he will go get the boss for me.

I take my tired self back to the car and a few minutes later, the gateman walks back saying he has said he is coming. I am happy that at least he got to speak to him.

‘’You know I don’t like the way Harry seems to be reluctant. He should just man up and be the man that he wanna be. He shouldn’t be keeping you waiting when he should be running to you, whenever you need him.’’

‘’Hey, you are such a protective small brother’’ I say teasingly making him laugh loudly. ‘’It's okay.’’

‘’No, Clara. It isn’t okay. You are a great person, you are valuable and I don’t expect any man to joke with you. I don’t like it and this I will tell you like forever.’’ I roll my eyes.

‘’I am a messed up person. I am a naïve village girl with no much value like those of Diana and I am poor. What do I have to do with the rich, anyway.’’

‘’I am pissed off, Clara.’’

‘’I am sorry, Luke.’’

‘’No, seriously. If I ever hear you say that again, then I will not be happy with you. Please take note.’’ He says with a serious look on the face making me realize that he actually means his words.

‘’Okay, I hear you.’’

‘’Good girl.’’ I smile when he says that and I am about to respond with a ‘good boy,’ but I don’t because someone, a very elegant looking lady. One of those ones whom you call a bitch without even talking to them to know if they are one shows up from the gate.

She is making sure steps towards the car and I make alert my antennae. This is not going to end well.

‘’Are you looking for Harry?’’ she says without greetings and Luke nods. She is standing close to the driver’s window and Luke has lowered his mirror in order to be able to speak with her. ‘’Sorry but he is busy and unable to see you guys. You can come back later.’’ She says with less interest.

‘’And who are you to speak for him?’’ Harry asks just as her eyes land on me. She sneers in pure disgust and I don't understand what her problem is.

‘’None of your business but if you must know. My name is Diana and I am the bride to be. Our wedding with Harry is gonna be the wedding of the year. Here, he has said I hand you our card. You all are welcome to the wedding.’’ Then she turns to walk away without saying another word.
