Chapter 39: Chapter 39

Cassandra's POV

The next few days went by in a happy daze as the truth finally sank in. We were now engaged! It was a heavenly feeling to know that I was now Julian's fiancée and soon would be his wife. He took me out frequently and we hardly had time to plan our wedding. Mom and Azura visited me often and couldn't stop asking us about our wedding plans but were disappointed knowing that we hadn't planned anything yet. Julian was in no hurry and I went along with his mood. They were busy with some charity ball mom was organizing at their hotel where Azura worked and excitedly updated me about it.

"Cassie, why don't you just lie down and relax a bit?" said mom as she sat with Azura in my room. I was excessively nauseous and had thrown up thrice already in a matter of ten minutes. After being fine for so long, I suddenly started feeling sick last night and I had no idea why. Julian was displeased but had to go out on an important job.

"Yeah, I think I will," I said while Nora helped me up and out of the en-suite towards the bed.

I lay down and she left to cook something soothing for me as I had no appetite whatsoever. "I'll help Nora make some honey, and ginger chicken soup for you. Ginger will reduce your nausea. When did you last eat?" asked Azura and I smiled at her thankfully.

"I had a little breakfast in the morning," I recalled.

"You should eat more honey. Take small meals regularly else your nausea will get worse," said mom as Azura left. I had just relaxed my head on the pillow when suddenly the sound of Max's loud wailing and the sound of footsteps echoed in the house. My eyes flew open and my heart panicked, Max. What happened to Max? I got up and clutching my heart with dread, I ran out with mom following me out of my room in a panic.

To my horror, I found a wailing Max on Azura's lap as she sat in an uncomfortable position at the foot of the stairs. "What happened?" I asked, going down the stairs to them. I caught Max and pulled him close while he howled with fear. My face paled seeing the way Azura had twisted her leg. She seemed in pain as well.

"I saw Max running down the stairs, then he slipped and fell and I rushed forward to stop his fall. He fell down the stairs, but before he could reach the bottom of the stairs and get hurt, I dived and caught him," said a frightened Azura, making me clutch my heart with concern. I was speechless and inspected Max fearing the worst. With him wailing so much, it was difficult to say if he was hurt or just scared.

My eyes went wide with fear. "Did any part of his body hit the ground?" asked mom scared and pale-faced. I gaped at Azura, waiting for her answer.

"No, mom, I saved him. He's traumatized, I guess," she said.

I was too scared to even ask anything as Max's red face and his loud crying were too much to bear. I sat down with him and pulled him onto my lap when suddenly his breath hitched and he lost consciousness, making me freeze. What happened to my baby?

I panicked, "Mom, he's fainted," I cried, with tears streaming down my face as I held onto an unconscious Max in my arms and looked around helplessly. We were lost, not knowing what had happened to him.

Mom called 911 and asked for help. Then she called Julian and Adrian to come as soon as possible. Nora rushed in and took Max from me and laid him on his back on the sofa. She then raised his legs above his heart level with pillows and loosened his clothes. I kept sitting down on the floor, unable to move or say anything out of shock. Mom consoled me and tried to help me get up, but failed. My brain stopped functioning, I didn't think I could live if anything happened to Max.

Azura, also sat quietly with me, holding my hand and massaging my ice-cold, shivering hands. She had sprained her leg trying to save Max and couldn't move an inch. We were all too shocked and waited for the pre-medics to hoist Azura up in case she had broken bones.

Julian came in 10 minutes, just as the ambulance arrived. The paramedics checked Max and tried to revive him. They also checked Azura and helped her into the ambulance. Julian and I accompanied them as we took them to the hospital, where we usually take Max for his checkups.

I rushed him inside while Julian completed the formalities. A paediatrician was available and we decided to consult him instead of waiting for Max's regular paediatrician.

Adrian came in and wheeled Azura to an orthopedic for a checkup.

The pediatrician checked Max thoroughly and put him on an IV drip. He gained consciousness within five minutes and looked around, scared and wide-eyed. I released the breath I was holding seeing him look at me. He caught my hand for comfort.

The doctor checked him as I stroked his hair lovingly to soothe him. "You are safe with Mommy, Max. Nothing's happened, see you're okay. We'll go home now." I cooed at him, trying to console him.

"Where's Daddy?" he said at last and I was relieved at last that he talked and I hugged him closer.

"Daddy's coming baby, he's downstairs," I told him as I stroked his cheek.

"Daddy go pee-pee?" Max asked concerned that Julian wasn't there.

"Yes honey," I told him as he grinned at me.

The nurse gave him some water. Julian came hurrying inside accompanied by mom and dad. They sat with Max showing him some new toys and cars that dad brought to keep him occupied, while Julian and I went to the doctor's chamber to have a word with him.
