Chapter 27: Chapter 27

"YOU saw that woman's face when you told her that you didn't marry me just for the baby?" I said to Adam as soon as Grace left us. "Huh. I can't believe she still managed to smile after that."

Adam shrugged his shoulders. "He's a media person, Claire."

I pursed my lips. "In fairness, you have very believable acting. You were really able to make her believe that you're in love with me."

"Really?" he asked me with a mysterious smile on his face. He even slightly raised one of his eyebrows.

"You saw her face, didn't you?"

Adam smiled. "Well, it's not really hard for me to pretend that I'm in love with you."

I slightly frowned. "What do you mean by that, Adam?"

He slightly shook his head. "Nothing. I'm going to get wine. Do you want anything?"

I pursed my lips. "I saw some chocolate parfait on the buffet table. I want some."

Adam slightly raised his brow. "Remember what the doctor said, Claire? You need to limit yourself from sweets."

I pouted my lips. "Come on. I won't eat too much. Just one or two. Come on, our baby wanted some chocolates." I even touched my belly before smiling at him.

"Alright," Adam said with an amused smile. "You and our baby win. Just stay here."

He left me alone on the table as he went to the buffet table. My eyes followed him. I couldn't help but hold my breath when I noticed that Adam was getting some attention from the other women in the party.

Well, I couldn't blame them. Adam was such an eye candy.

"I hope you're happy now," Adam said when he came back with a plate of food with him. He placed the plate of chocolate parfait on the table. He also got a glass of sparkling juice for me.

I looked at him, my lips were grinning wide. "Thanks, Adam."

"Come on, dig in." He said, slightly raising the glass of wine he was holding.

I picked up a spoon and started eating the glass of desert in front of me.

"I hope you aren't getting bored here, Adam," I told him in the middle of the party.

"Don't worry, you're here so I'm not bored." He smiled at me as he ate some nachos.

I slowly raised my brow. "What? Am I a clown to you?"

He chuckled. "You know that's not what I mean."

I tried to roll my eyes at him. But in the end, I couldn't help but chuckle, too. "Shut up."

Adam was just like Marcus. He was funny and sweet… and caring. The only difference he had from Marcus was that I was physically attractive to him.

Maybe that's the reason why I was comfortable with him.

"Hmm, you have some chocolate on the chin." Adam said to me.

Even before I could react, his hand was already on my face. Using his thumb, he gently wiped the chocolate off my chin.

I blinked. "T-thanks, Adam." Did I say that I was comfortable around him, right?

But then I couldn't understand why every time he touched me like this, I felt caught off guard. He was the only person who could make my heartbeat faster.

"You're welcome, Claire—"

"Adam?"

Adam and I both turned our heads to the left, where the voice came from. A woman was standing near us. She was looking at Adam with a surprised smile on her face.

"Adam, it's really you!" the woman said as she went near Adam. "Gosh, I never thought I'd see you here."

"Mary." Adam greeted the woman casually. "Fancy seeing you here."

I looked at the woman. Oh. So she and Adam knew each other, obviously. I couldn't help but examine her.

She looked like a living Barbie doll with her height and figure. She was wearing a sexy black dress with a deep plunging neckline, the same as mine. Her ginger hair was long and in a high ponytail, giving us a perfect view of her face.

She's got a heart-shaped face, a small pointed nose, high cheekbones, and a pair of plump lips.

I wondered what her relationship with Adam was.

"What are you doing here, Adam?" Mary asked Adam. "Since when did you become a fan of these kinds of formal events?"

The woman chuckled. Even her laughter sounded good, huh.

"I'm here with my wife." I felt Adam's hand on my waist. "Mary, this is Claire, my wife."

The woman turned to me with wide eyes. She looked really shocked. "Oh, you're already married?" she asked Adam while her eyes were still on me. She even blinked her eyes a few times, as if she couldn't believe that I was real.

"Yeah. I'm already married, Mary." I felt Adam's eyes on me. "Claire, this is Mary. She's... uh... my ex-girlfriend."

I snapped my head at Adam. Ex-girlfriend? I thought he doesn't do girlfriends and now he's telling me that this pretty woman was his ex-girlfriend?

"It's nice to meet you, Claire."

I turned my head to Mary, who was now smiling at me.

"I'm sorry about my reaction a while ago. I just couldn't believe that Adam here was already married. The last time I saw him, and that was five months ago, he was still a wild man."

I managed to smile at the woman. She looked nice, anyway. "It's fine. It was nice to meet you, too. I hope you're enjoying my mother's party."

Her eyes widened a little. "Oh. You're Laura's daughter! That's why you looked familiar to me."

I nodded. "Yup. May I ask how you happened to know my mother?"

She smiled. "I designed her gown that she wore tonight."

"Mary is a fashion designer," Adam said beside me.

"Oh." I nodded and smiled at her. I never expected that. She looked more like a model than a fashion designer.

"Well, it was nice to see you again, Adam," Mary said. "And you too, Claire. It was nice to meet you." He smiled before leaving Adam and I alone.

"I thought you don't do girlfriends?" I asked Adam when Mary left us.

"That was after Mary," he answered, which made my forehead crease.

"After Mary?"

"Mary was my high school sweetheart. We got together during high school."

My eyes widened with that information. "How long have you been together?"

"Three years."

"Three years. That's too long."

Adam looked at me. "We broke up when we both entered college. She became too clingy and I didn't like that. I realized that I wanted to live a life without anyone taking control over me. Since then, I never tried to get into a serious relationship again."

"But you and Mary, you're still friends after the break-up?"

Adam smiled at me. "Nah. We haven't talked for years. She said she's bitter about our breakup. We'd only reconnected two years ago, when we accidentally saw each other in France."

I blinked. Adam didn't get a girlfriend again after Mary. That woman was obviously her first love, huh.

"Are you okay, Claire?"

I turned to Adam, who was now looking at me. I didn't know why I suddenly wanted to drink the wine in front of him.

But then, I just managed a smile. "Yeah. Why wouldn't I be okay?"
