Chapter 39: Chapter 39

Mink’s P.O.V

As I watched the new members get integrated into the pack, I couldn't help but feel the weight of responsibility settling heavily upon my shoulders. Becoming an Alpha wasn't just about leading the pack; it was about ensuring its growth, stability, and prosperity. The arrival of new wolves meant more than just an increase in numbers; it meant a greater need for organization, direction, and unity.

As the pack gathered around the newly constructed pack house, I observed the newcomers mingling among themselves with enthusiasm. There was a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation in the air, tempered only by the realization that with new members came new challenges and responsibilities. It was up to me to ensure that everyone felt welcome, valued, and supported in their transition to becoming part of our pack.

"Alright, everyone," I called out, my voice cutting through the buzz of conversation. "I know things might feel a little overwhelming right now, but trust me, we're all in this together. We're a pack, a family, and we'll support each other every step of the way."

The wolves nodded in agreement, their expressions a mixture of determination and uncertainty. It was clear that they were eager to prove themselves, to show that they were worthy of being part of the pack. But it was also evident that they were looking to me for guidance, for direction in this new chapter of their lives.

"We've already started working on expanding the pack house to accommodate our growing numbers," I continued, gesturing towards the construction site where several wolves were hard at work. "But there's still plenty to be done. We need to organize hunting parties, gather supplies, and ensure that everyone has a comfortable place to rest. And we need patrol members to ensure that our pack borders are secure from outsiders."

The wolves listened attentively, their eyes focused on me as I outlined the tasks that needed to be completed. There was a sense of purpose and determination in the air, a recognition that each of us had a role to play in the success of our pack.

As we set to work assigning tasks and organizing teams, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride swelling within me. Being an Alpha wasn't just about giving orders; it was about leading by example, inspiring others to be their best selves, and fostering a sense of camaraderie and purpose within the pack.

Now that the members were increasing, there was a bigger chance that not everyone who came to join the pack would do so with pure intensions, and there were bound to be spies from other packs snooping around. That's why I've stationed guards to patrol the area, ensuring our safety from any potential threats but lately, the responsibility has been weighing heavily on my shoulders.

The pack forming in this area is bound to attract attention, not just from other wolves but from humans and other predators as well.

It was a lot to handle, and sometimes I felt overwhelmed by it all but I knew I have to stay strong for the sake of our pack. So when Ruksaar starts teasing me about it, I can't help but feel a twinge of annoyance.

"If you had accepted this responsibility earlier, maybe you would've been a pro by now," Ruksaar teases, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

I try to brush off her comment but my annoyance kept on rising.

But Ruksaar doesn't seem to notice my frustration. She continues to jest, poking fun at my inexperience as a leader. Normally, I would just shrug off her remarks or fire back with a sarcastic comment of my own. But today, I can't find it in me to do either.

Instead, I snapped at her, my voice sharper than intended. "This isn't the time for your jokes, Ruksaar. We're facing real dangers out here, and I need you to take this seriously."

There's a moment of silence as my words hang in the air, tension thick between us. Ruksaar looked taken aback, her playful demeanor replaced by a look of confusion.

"Whoa, calm down, Mink," she spoke, her voice softer now, lacking its usual edge. "I was just trying to lighten the mood. I didn't mean to upset you."

I took a deep breath, trying to reign in my emotions. I knew Ruksaar meant well, but right then, I couldn't afford to let my guard down, not even for a moment.

"I know," I sighed, my tone getting softer now. "But we can't afford to be careless. Not with everything that's at stake."

Ruksaar nods, seeming to understand. But there's still a hint of concern in her eyes as she looks at me, as if she's seeing me in a new light.

It's strange, I think to myself as I watch her confused expression. Normally, no matter what kind of provocation she used, I would just brush it off or give a sarcastic reply. But today, I couldn't seem to hold back my frustration.

Maybe it's just the stress getting to me, I tell myself. Or maybe it's something more, but whatever the reason, one thing's for sure: I can't afford to let my guard down, not now, not ever. Not when the safety of our pack depends on it.

“Look, I'm sorry for snapping at you. It was wrong and I really don’t know what came over me. I’m sorry, please forgive me.” I sighed, running a hand through my hair in frustration.

“It's okay. I’m guessed you were stressed about the new pack members, don’t sweat it, it's okay.” she smiled finally, making me sigh in relief.

"You know, Ruksaar, I've been feeling so...strange lately," I confessed, the weight of my emotions heavy in my chest. "It's like I'm on this rollercoaster of emotions, and I can't seem to get off."

Ruksaar furrowed her brows in concern. "What do you mean, Mink? You're usually so composed and steady. It's unlike you to be so...volatile."

"I know," I replied with a sigh, looking around the almost empty living room as if searching for the right words to describe my situation to her. "But lately, I feel like I'm teetering on the edge of laughter and tears at any given moment. It's exhausting, Ruksaar. I don't even know what's causing it."

Ruksaar reached out a comforting hand, placing it gently on mine. "Perhaps it's just a phase, Mink. We all have our moments of vulnerability. It's okay to feel this way."

I nodded, grateful for her understanding, but still unable to shake the unease that gripped me. Just then, amidst our conversation, Kushal, who had been previously playing in one corner of the room, crawled over to me, his chubby cheeks flushed with excitement. He was surrounded by a colorful array of toys, his laughter filling the room.

I couldn't help but smile as he made his way to me, his tiny hands reaching out. I lowered myself to the floor, welcoming him into my embrace. He settled comfortably on my lap, his tiny fingers patting my tummy in a soothing rhythm.

"He always knows how to make everything better, doesn't he?" Ruksaar remarked, her eyes softening as she watched the interaction between Kushal and me.

"Mink, is everything alright?" she asked, her gaze probing when I didn’t reply.

Instead, my gaze was focused on Kushal’s tiny hands as they lay on my stomach.

“Mink? Mikalya?”

I swallowed, mustering a weak smile. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," I replied, hoping my voice sounded steadier than I felt.

But Ruksaar wasn't convinced. She leaned forward slightly, concern etched on her features. "Are you sure? You seem... off. Is there something you're not telling me?"

I hesitated, unsure of how to broach the subject that had been weighing heavily on my mind for days.

And then it hit me. This was it. This was the moment I had been dreading, the moment when I would have to confront the possibility that my life was about to change in a way I hadn't anticipated. I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what was to come.

"My last cycle... it was..." I trailed off, unable to bring myself to say the words out loud.

Ruksaar's eyes widened in realization, and her hand flew to her mouth in shock. "Mink, how long has it been?" she asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Two months," I replied, my own voice barely audible.

Two months late. Two months of agonizing uncertainty, of hoping against hope that it was just a fluke, a temporary glitch in my body's natural rhythm due to all the stress about now growing pack. But deep down, I knew better. I knew that something had changed, something that I couldn't ignore any longer.

Ruksaar reached out to place a hand on my shoulders. "We need to get you tested," she said firmly, her eyes brimming with determination.

I nodded, grateful for her unwavering support. "Yeah, you're right. I'll go to the city tomorrow and get the necessary kits."

Ruksaar squeezed my hand reassuringly. "I'll come with you," she said, her voice gentle but firm.

I smiled weakly, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over me. But at the same time, I didn’t know what to make of this new development in my life.
