Chapter 22: Chapter 22
There was something that bothered me though. SHE WAS PREGNANT!
"Wh....what are you doing here?" Amsey questioned.
"You've been running around, trying to hide from your shadow. You've not been around and your phone's been off. I had someone keep an eye on you since I couldn't see you in your Cybercafe anymore. The person trailed you to your home and observed you're only present in your home at night. That's why I came here by this time. I just don't understand why you've been avoiding me ever since I told you the news." She said.
I finally understood why she came so late at night. It was all because she couldn't reach him during the day and here we were, being scared and acting like we were going to be killed by a vampire or something. But what news could make Amsey switch off his phone for weeks and avoid going to his workplace or staying at home? I wondered.
As if in sync, Amsey took a quick glance at me.
"Victoria, this isn't the time nor place to talk about this." He said.
Ohh... Her name was Victoria.
"Why?" She asked, a smirk playing around her lips. "Oh, is it because she's here?"
She walked towards me sizing me up with her eyes.
She snickered. "You're Cassandra, right? You're not that much of a big deal. We don't even fit into the same class apparently. The only thing that is mutual between us is that we're both pregnant for Amsey here."
"I'm not pregnant for...."
Amsey cut me off. "I'm sure Cas is pregnant for me but I'm unsure about your own pregnancy being mine." He addressed Victoria.
She sighed. "How long will you deny it? I'm 5 months pregnant and you're the only one I've slept with in 7 months."
"You took advantage of me." Amsey yelled.
"Took advantage of you? How in the world would anyone believe a girl would rape a guy as big as you? You're only lying because of this thing that's pregnant." She said, giving me a distasteful look.
"Tell me, Amsey. What does she have that you can't see in me? Does she have money or something? You know how rich and influential my father is and you're still rejecting myself and my baby. This is like a breakthrough for you. My father would change your life. All you have to do is come see my parents and tell them you're responsible for my pregnancy. I've been telling him you want to see him and you're just scared. They want to meet you and they keep saying there's nothing for you to worry about." Victoria said.
Amsey sighed deeply and looked regretful. "If only I hadn't gone to see you that day on behalf of Ken, that bastard, If only." Amsey said.
"Too much of you being a good friend." Victoria said. "Anyway, the deed is done."
"Why didn't you abort the pregnancy and how come you only showed up two weeks ago with a bloated stomach? Victoria, you're a cunning person. I'm certainly not the Father of that child you're crying. It's impossible." Amsey yelled.
"Fine then. Let's carry out a DNA test. And if I'm right, you'd have to promise to get married to me." Victoria said on top of her voice.
Amsey looked frustrated. "But why do you need to even get married? You're just 20 years old." He said.
"Anything I decide to do with my life is none of your business. I'm an only child and my Father doesn't have a heir. If you get married to me, you'll be the one to inherit all my Father owns and you'll never suffer ever again." Victoria told him.
Amsey seemed to be deep in thoughts. I didn't know whether he was considering her offer of marriage or whether he was thinking of the fastest way to kill her. He really seemed like he hated her and wanted to end her life.
I went to his side and squeezed his hands.
He sighed. "I'm sorry, Cas. I didn't...."
"It's fine." I said.
"I wish I could turn back the hands of time. And to think it was because of that idiot that had tried to take advantage of you that went to see her. I regret ever knowing her, Cas. I curse the day she came to do her assignment at my Cafe." He said.
Before I could open my mouth to speak, Victoria came into view.
She clapped her hands and laughed. "Well, well, well. Aren't you guys just the perfect couple? You love her and I love you. Cassandra, I know you love Amsey so you would do anything for him, isn't it?" She asked.
I just looked at her, saying nothing.
"Come on, I expect an answer." She said.
"Yes. I'd do anything for Amsey." I responded.
"Good. Now, don't you wanna see Amsey succeed?" She asked again.
"Ignore her." Amsey said.
I gave him a faint smile and looked back at Victoria. "Of course, I want to see him succeed."
"Then let me have him. I'll give you all you want and make sure neither you nor your child suffer. Just let me have Amsey, please. I love him. I've never loved someone this much. Please, let me have him. I'll do everything you want. I'd give you all the money. It's not like you're rich or anything and I know you need the money. Amsey already told me about you." She said.
My heart jumped. Hope he didn't tell her about my past. "What exactly did he say?" I questioned.
"I'm not obliged to answer that, am I?" She retorted.
"If you want me to so much as consider the gibberish you just spilled, you will answer." I said.
"Blackmail." She rolled her eyes. "Fine then, I'll tell you."
"I went to see Amsey two weeks ago in his Cafe and informed him I was pregnant for him. He was perplexed and surprised and kept on refusing it to be his. I wondered why he was so much adamant at accepting the pregnancy till he was like what is he gonna tell Cas. And I then asked who Cas is then he explained that Cas' full name is Cassandra and that you've been through a lot and you're pregnant for him at the moment. He said too many people had let you down and he couldn't do the same to you and said that he loved you so much. He even compared both of us. He was like you never forced yourself on him and you're different from other girls. He said you're an orphan and you had nothing in the world except him and he couldn't just leave you shattered." Victoria explained.
I looked at Amsey. I knew my instincts were right and Mr Muffin was wrong all along. Amsey really cared about me.
"Can you go home by this time?" I asked her.
It was already past 11pm.
"I guess. I'd be fine." She said but I could tell she looked jittery.
"You're not to be moving around by this time and you're pregnant for that matter." I said.
"I'll be alright." She said
"Do your parents know where you are?" I asked.
"They must think I'm in my bedroom. I bribed the guards to let me out." She said, picking at her nails and looking at the floor.
"You can stay here for the night." I told her.
Amsey looked quite alarmed. "What are you saying?"
"Relax. Even if you don't care about her, at least, care about the child she's carrying." I said.
Amsey looked furious but didn't object to it anymore.
"Come." I said.
I led her through the passage to my side of the bedroom.
"How come you guys sleep on distinct beds? Aren't you lovers?" She asked, a hint of amusement lingering in her tone of voice.
I decided to ignore that question. "You can sleep in my bed for the night and go home tomorrow."
She gave me a small smile.
I nodded and was leaving when her voice stopped me. "Cassandra."
"Yes?" I said, turning back to face her.
She took calculated steps towards me. "I think I get it now. You're different, really. Most girls won't do this."
"Do what?"
"Listen to me or give me a bed to sleep. Not many girls will be so concerned. Thank you." She said.
"You're welcome. Always." I said, turned my back and walked out of the room.
I saw Amsey in the living room sitting on the couch with his head bent.
I sat beside him and massaged his shoulders.
"Mmmh... Good... You're doing it well." He said.
I giggled.
When I was done, he lifted his head and smiled at me. "Thanks for your understanding and compassion." He said.
"I'll do anything for you." I said.
"I didn't sleep with her on purpose. I was drunk and...."
I placed my finger on his lips. "Sssh. You owe me no explanation."
He simply sighed and hung his head low again. He hadn't wanted to let me down and that's why he had been avoiding me. I knew he was regretting all what had happened between him and Victoria but wasn't he being too hard on himself?
I mean, wasn't Victoria rich? She could change his life forever and besides, he was overly too concerned about my own feelings than his own. He was interested in being the father of my child whereas he wasn't even the biological father and he was rejecting his own blood which was sweet but really wrong in my perspective.
He lifted my chin and made a strong eye contact with me. I hadn't known when he had raised his head again. "Cassandra Msheilia Peters." He said.
I didn't even know his full name. "Amsey." I responded.
"I'll never let you go."
"What if you have to?"
"I'll never let you go."
I smiled and embraced him.
He held me close.
"Nothing would ever change how I feel about you and nothing will stop both of us from being together. You came into my life not by coincidence but by fate and I'd never let you go." He reassured me..
I didn't know what the future held for us but I knew we would be fine so long as we got our backs. With that thought lingering at the back of my mind, I didn't pay attention to what else he said, I only snuggled closer to him and drifted off to sleep in his arms.
