Chapter 27: Chapter 27
Author’s POV
Cara was sitting in the living room, in front of her laptop completing the assignment she has to submit tomorrow.
She lifted her eyes up to look at Chase who was in the kitchen, making her favourite pasta for dinner.
“Do you need any help?” she asked him making him shift his gaze towards her.
“It’s almost done…” he suddenly paused in the middle of his sentence. Cara saw a playful smile breaking onto his lips when he continued,
“Actually yes. I do need your help”.
“And what is it that you need my help with?” she asked folding her arms over her chest and resting her back to the back rest of the couch. An amusing smile was plastered on her own lips.
“If you could give me a kiss, it would have been perfect. You know I am in dire need of it right now” he said it so seriously as if he was talking to a doctor and was asking for a medicine.
“Hmm… I have to think about it. As you might remember how you attacked me with lots of kisses as soon as we entered in the house, after returning from college”.
“But that my lord was two long hours ago” he started walking in her direction as he continued, “And now I can’t control myself anymore”. He sat down beside her.
“But…” she was about to protest in order to tease him but he didn’t give her any chance to do that as he grabbed the back of her head and pressed his lips against hers.
She smiled against his lips and wrapped her arms around his neck. He deepened the kiss causing butterflies to dance in her stomach.
They were lost in their own world when suddenly his phone started ringing and his body stilled against her.
Cara opened her eyes when he pulled away from the kiss and saw the look of fear on his face.
He pulled out his phone from his pocket and the way his Adam apple bobbed up and down told Cara how much he was dreading looking at the screen of his phone.
She took his hand in hers and gave it a light squeeze to remind him that she is right here, beside him.
He looked at the caller ID and sighed in relief. “It’s from the boxing club” Chase told her.
It has been like this since past one week, when Chase got the call from Albert for the first time.
Whenever his phone starts ringing, Chase gets all tensed up thinking that it’s a call from Albert.
But luckily he hasn’t called him again, after the day when he told Chase that Cara was not home and she really wasn’t.
Chase felt relieved that day when he found out that Cara just went out to buy some stuff and came back safely.
Chase put his phone on the table and again leaned forward to take her lips into his mouth for another kiss but before he could do that, his phone started ringing again.
This time Chase groaned in anger for getting disturbed again, during their sweet moment.
“You should take it. It might be important” Cara said with a chuckle, seeing his irritated face.
“You like it a lot when someone disturbs us, don’t you?” he said while looking at her face with accusation in his eyes for laughing at him.
Cara laughed again watching him sulk. She shook her head, “It’s because you look really cute with that pout on your lips”.
“You just wait. Let me take this call first then I will punish you for laughing at me and for calling me cute” he said picking the phone from the table.
“Okay, I will be waiting Mr. Cutie” she said and he couldn’t help but smile at her words.
He got up on his feet and made his way towards the kitchen as he put the phone over his ear after answering the call.
“Hello?”
Cara’s eyes were fixed on his face as he continued to talk on phone while checking the food he was making.
It’s been almost a week since he told everything about his life to her. She couldn’t believe what she heard that day.
The way his voice cracked every time he mentioned his sister, the pain, the self blame in his eyes, all of this was killing her.
Now she understood everything. She understood why Chase was like this. She understood why he always used to get so riled up whenever anyone looked at her or said something indecent about her.
She understood why he hates his father so much. Now everything about Chase and his behaviour made sense to her.
At first when he told her that he would be with her all the time and told her to stop going to her part time job, she couldn’t understand why he was being that way.
But when he told her how that crazy man threatened Chase using her, telling him that he would do the exact same thing to her as well which he did with Valerie, scared her.
She was scared for herself, of course but was more scared for Chase. How devastated, how scared he looked after talking with Albert, was making her worried.
Chase told her what kind of psychopath Albert is. He also told her how he was so obsessed with Chase.
He looked so ecstatic, seeing Chase in the juvenile court. He had this look of accomplishment and pure bliss on his face when Chase was given the punishment and sent to juvie.
He kept mocking Chase telling him how he couldn’t do anything to harm him. But Albert made sure to do everything when no one was paying attention.
Since the day Chase got call from Albert, he has been on edges constantly, whenever they are outside.
Just as he said, he never leaves her alone even for a second.
He doesn’t stay inside classroom as he had told her because he thought it would make her extremely uncomfortable.
But he stays outside of her classroom as if he is her bodyguard.
But what else can he do to keep her safe. He doesn’t have any other choice as he doesn’t know what that bastard Albert might do to her if he let her slip away from his eyes, even for a moment.
She doesn’t go to her job either and returns to his apartment with him as soon as all of her classes are over.
They spend rest of the day at home. Sometimes she gets fed up by staying at home and wants to go out with him for walk or drive.
But knowing how he himself is compromising a lot in his life for her sake, she keeps her feelings to herself.
Because just like her, he doesn’t go out anywhere leaving her alone and stays with her all the time. He doesn’t spend much time with his friends unless they stop by at his apartment to say hi and have some fun with them.
He doesn’t even go to his work, his boxing club which is one of the most important thing in his life but after Cara.
She doesn’t know how long it’s going to be like this but as long as it can keep Chase’s heart at peace and concern free, she is willing to do it.
Because he is doing it for her sake.
She came out of her thoughts when Chase came towards her and sat down where he was sitting earlier. But this time with worry lacing his features.
“What happened Chase?” Cara asked him when he didn’t say anything and kept sitting there in silence.
He moved his gaze to look at her face and said, “There’s a little problem at the club”.
“Why? What’s the problem?” she asked again when he didn’t elaborate.
“The police is there in the club, they are claiming that they got the report that my club uses illegal drugs and wants to raid the place” he told her while raking his hand through his hair in frustration.
Cara was about to say something when his phone started ringing again. He immediately answered the call.
“Yeah tell me, what did they say?” Chase asked.
The employee at his club told him that police has search warrant and was insisting on searching the place.
Chase didn’t have any problem and told them to let the police search the place.
“They found the drugs in the locker room” his man informed and Chase’s eyes widened.
“What the f**k? How is that possible? Didn’t you pay attention to what’s going on in the club?” Chase asked starting to lose his temper.
“I am sorry Chase. But what do I do now? They are not leaving and insisting on meeting you” he told.
“Didn’t you tell him about my dad?” Chase asked.
He doesn’t like using his father’s position and power for his use. But right now he doesn’t have any choice.
Because his club is very important to him and he doesn’t want anything bad happening there. But he will never leave Cara alone to go there to sort everything out.
That is why he is thinking about using his father’s reputation for his benefit.
“Yes I told him, multiple times. But it looks like he is new here and doesn’t know about you at all. He is not buying any reason. He keeps on repeating that he wants you to come here and meet him or else he would arrest everyone present here at the club” he informed.
Chase sighed, “Look I can’t come there. Tell him to do whatever he wants”. With this Chase disconnected the call and threw his phone on the table.
He covered his face with his palm and groaned out in frustration.
Cara could see how worried he was. She put her hand over his shoulder and gave it a light squeeze.
“I think you should go there” she said making him stare at her face.
“I am not going anywhere. It’s not that important” he said shaking his head side to side as if he was trying to convince himself.
“The police will arrest everyone present there, even the ones who come to get training, it’s a serious matter Chase” she pointed out.
Chase again shook his head, “Whatever it is, I am not going anywhere leaving you alone and that’s final”.
He tried to get up on his feet but Cara held his hand and made him sit again.
“I know you are worried about me Chase. But you are also worried about your work. It’s your life’s hard work. And those people, they have done nothing wrong then why should they have to get in trouble for no reason” she tried to make him understand.
“But you…” she cut him off.
“I will be okay. I am at home Chase and no one can barge in here, you don’t have to worry”
“But what if…” he started again but she didn’t let him finish.
“No buts. Just answer one question of mine” she paused to caress the back of his palm with her fingers.
“Aren’t you worried about everyone there? Don’t you want to go there and sort out everything by yourself?” she asked.
He kept staring at her face. For a moment he contemplated lying to her but he knows it isn’t going to work. It never does. She reads him like an open book.
He sighed in defeat and nodded his head, “I want to go but not leaving you here all alone” he said and he wasn’t lying.
He was thinking about taking her there so that she won’t be alone here at home and he wouldn’t have to worry about her if she is with him.
But then the possibility that he might have to go to the station if situation didn’t go as he planned.
Then he would either have to leave her alone at club which he would never do or he would have to take her to station and that idea also got rejected by his heart.
He can’t take her to a place where all kinds of criminals come and go.
She took both of his hands in his and spoke, “I will be okay Chase, I promise. I will not leave the house at any cost. I won’t open the door for anyone except you”.
“Is there anything else that you want me to do? I promise I will do it, so you won’t have to worry and go and do your work?” she asked him.
Chase kept staring at her face for a moment as she waited for him to say something.
A soft smile broke on to his lips and he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her into a hug.
“There is nothing you can do to make me stop worrying about you” he whispered against the skin of her neck.
She tried to pull away from the hug to look into his eyes but he tightened his hold as he continued.
“But if you promise to do everything that you just said then I might worry less”.
Cara wrapped her arms around him and started stroking his back with her palm in attempt to calm him as she could feel how nervous he was by the way his heart was pounding in his chest.
“I promise”.
Placing a soft kiss on her shoulder blade he pulled away from hug but didn’t let her body go.
“Don’t go anywhere, no matter what happens. Don’t open the door for anyone unless it’s me.” he repeated her words again.
“Call me immediately if anything unusual happens” he said and she nodded her head.
“I will be back in a heartbeat. Just…” he was about to tell her to stay safe but before he could complete his sentence she leaned forward and pecked his lips.
“I will” she assured him answering his unsaid words as if she could hear his thoughts.
He took her lips in a quick kiss and got up on his feet. He took his jacket from his room and walked towards her who was standing near door waiting for him.
He once again wrapped his arms around her pulling her in to a hug, still not liking the idea of leaving her alone.
“I don’t want to go” he told her honestly. She patted his back with one hand and caressed his hairs with another.
“Go and come back quickly. I will wait for you” she said.
He pulled away from hug and nodded his head.
“I called George. He will be here within half an hour. Open the door only after watching who is outside through this monitor” he pointed towards the monitor which is connected to the CCTV camera outside in the lobby, on top of the main door.
“Let him stay with you until I return” he told her and she just nodded her head with a smile.
He smiled back at her and left her body. He came out of the house and she locked the door carefully behind him.
She sat down on the couch and started closing her laptop. She won’t be able to focus on her studies right now when she is all alone in here.
She told him that she would be okay but inside, she is terrified. And anyone would be if they found out that there is someone out there who wants to hurt you in order to hurt someone you cherish.
She is scared to death right now. When she is with Chase she doesn’t feel even an ounce of fear but as soon as he left her side she can’t help but feel afraid.
She was about to pick her phone up to call Sapphire so that she can distract her mind from the terrifying thoughts of Albert and escape from her fear.
But before she could do that her phone started ringing and a beautiful smile appeared on her lips.
She answered the call immediately and his face popped up on the screen in front of her eyes. It was Chase who face timed her.
“What?” she asked pretending to not know why he called her but couldn’t hide the smile which was adorning her lips.
“Nothing, just missing you” he said while glancing at her face with a smile of his own.
“You just left a minute ago” she chuckled.
“I know. I don’t know why I am missing you like this. There must be something wrong with me, don’t you think?” he asked faking the expression of worry.
“There is indeed something wrong with you and you know what is it?” she asked getting up on her feet.
He moved his gaze from the road ahead of him to glance at her face for a moment and then again fixing his gaze back on the road.
“What is?” he asked.
“You are crazy” she said while laughing and her laugh made him feel a little calmer.
He was feeling so worried for her and in his heart he knew that she was also as scared as him.
That is why he called her so that he could see her continuously and his heart can be rest assured that she is okay.
Both of them knew how restless and anxious they were feeling inside, without one another.
That is why they both kept talking about random stuff, cracking jokes every once in a while until Chase reached the club.
“Let me call George and ask him where is he” Chase said and disconnected the call.
Within two minutes her phone again started ringing and Cara answered the call.
“He is stuck in the traffic. It would take ten minutes for him to reach there” he informed her.
“Okay, now go” she said.
He nodded, “I will call you again once I settle down everything in there and come back in the car”.
“Okay”.
He didn’t want to disconnect the call but when she reassured him that she is okay and will call him if anything happens, he disconnected the call.
He came out of the car after parking it. He made his way into his club which is in the basement of the building he was in right now.
He entered into his club and right at that moment his phone started ringing. His employee who called him, turned around upon hearing the sound.
“Chase, I was just calling you” his friend Rocky who works in the club and had called him earlier said to him while disconnecting the call.
“Where are the police?” Chase asked looking around when he didn’t see anyone.
“Yeah, I was calling to tell you about it. They just left saying that everything is sorted out and now they don’t have to meet you” Rocky said.
“What?” Chase frowned in confusion.
“If they didn’t want to meet then why were they so persistent earlier?” Chase asked in his cold tone, getting angry at the situation.
“Yes, it seemed strange to us as well. This whole situation seemed strange actually” Jake another employee said this time.
Chase raked his hand through his hair feeling uneasy. He couldn’t understand what was going on. He was confuse.
In an instant the confusion got replaced by concern and fear when a weird thought came to his mind.
He quickly fished out his phone from his pocket and was about to dial Cara’s number when his phone started ringing.
He immediately answered the call and put it over his ear and asked in panic, “Cara you…”
His words died in his throat and his heart stopped beating when he heard her trembling voice coming from the other side of the line.
“Ch.. Chase… he is here”.
