Chapter 481: Chapter 481
Li Man didn’t wait for Lu Jingchen to answer, and continued, "My mom is waiting for me at home. I came here just for breakfast and to pick up some documents that she forgot yesterday. I took a cab here and it’s rush hour now; taxis are hard to come by, so could you possibly give me a ride on your way?"
Lu Jingchen looked at Li Man in front of him, his eyebrows imperceptibly furrowed, but he did not say much, neither did he refuse. A hum was his way of agreeing.
Li Man grew up in a single-parent family. Her father had an affair and divorced her mother over a decade ago, taking his new love and Li Man abroad to settle down, leaving her mother behind to run their breakfast diner alone.
Lu Jingchen’s adoptive parents were not wealthy, just average folks. When Lu Jingchen was young and had not yet returned to the Lu Family, but was living at Murong Rui’s place, Li Man’s mother was very kind to them, often bringing him to the diner for free meals.
Having known Li Man’s mother, Lu Jingchen could say he has known her for almost twenty years.
Li Man returned to An City and to her mother only a few years ago. By that time, Lu Jingchen had already gone back to the Lu Family. However, because Li Man and Murong Rui became best friends, Lu Jingchen had seen her a few times but felt nothing special about Li Man.
But now that Li Man had brought up her mother, naturally, it would be difficult for Lu Jingchen to refuse her request.
Seeing Lu Jingchen nod, the slight discomfort Li Man had felt in the diner dissipated instantly. Her voice was sweet and tender, yet not off-putting, "Thank you, Jingchen."
Lu Jingchen didn’t speak. He turned and walked toward the driver’s seat, still carrying the bag of freshly packed breakfast, his dark and deep eyes void of any emotion.
Seeing Lu Jingchen entering the car, Li Man hurriedly followed, but instead of opening the rear passenger door, she chose to sit in the front passenger seat.
Lu Jingchen saw Li Man sitting in the passenger seat, his brows furrowed slightly, but he said nothing, instead, he turned to glance at Song Qiao, who was resting with closed eyes, his lips pursed, his jaw clenched even tighter.
Due to her pregnancy, Song Qiao was becoming increasingly sleepy. She had planned to rest her eyes a bit, but without realizing it, she slowly drifted off to sleep. She had just fallen asleep when the sound of Li Man speaking excitedly to Lu Jingchen from the passenger seat irritated her for no apparent reason.
Her beautiful eyes snapped open, her gaze landing on Li Man’s profile as she coldly said, "Can you keep it down? Keep it up, and I’ll kick you out of the car!"
The moment she got in the car, she started talking non-stop, and Lu Jingchen only occasionally responded and did not pay much attention. Who could have expected she would keep babbling so cheerily?
After getting pregnant, her temper naturally became much more volatile, a common trait among expecting mothers, thus Song Qiao’s tone when addressing Li Man was not very pleasant.
Li Man was suddenly stunned by Song Qiao’s scolding, and when she turned to look back at the woman seated behind her, she found herself staring into a pair of eyes filled with cold anger, which caused her to swallow hard and left her unable to find words to retort.
The car stopped at a red light, and only then did Li Man belatedly realize the situation, subconsciously turning to look at Lu Jingchen beside her. After a long time, she hesitantly let out a sentence, "Jingchen, did I do something wrong? Is that why your wife hates me so much?"
Her eyes suddenly reddened, and when she looked at Lu Jingchen, she appeared somewhat pitiful.
Seeing this woman’s expression, especially hearing her words, Song Qiao almost couldn’t refrain from snorting derisively.
Damn it, she makes it sound like she’s been wronged... But isn’t this fragile and pathetically pitiful look precisely what most easily softens a man’s heart?
With this thought, Song Qiao’s eyebrows involuntarily raised, her gaze shifting to Lu Jingchen, curious to see if he would blame her for the woman’s attitude.
If he really did react that way, she would immediately open the car door and take a cab to the film set herself; there was no need to stay in the car any longer.
