Chapter 31: Chapter 31
What you think about in the day, you dream of at night. Encouraged by my best friend and my admiration for Daniel Carter, I dreamed of him while I slept. Chapters first released on novel·fire·net
In the dream, there was no mishap at my wedding with Adrian Gordon; it proceeded as planned.
I wore a wedding dress I had sewn myself and walked up the red carpet amidst exclamations and praises, slowly approaching my Prince Charming.
When I got closer, the person lifted my veil, and as I looked closely, the groom turned out not to be Adrian Gordon, but... Daniel Carter!
I was terrified, thinking I was hallucinating, and searched everywhere for Adrian Gordon’s figure.
But Daniel Carter held my hand and continued walking as if we were going to walk till the end of time.
I was so intoxicated in the dream that I didn’t want to wake up. Just as the alarm buzzed, I dreamed I was kissing Daniel Carter, feeling as if I were floating...
However, reality eventually triumphed over the dream.
I struggled to open my eyes, reached for my phone, and the reminder on the screen instantly cleared my mind.
Civil Affairs Bureau appointment, divorce.
I quickly got up to get ready for work and called Adrian Gordon on the way to the company.
Recalling the unpleasant ending at the auction, I thought Adrian Gordon wouldn’t answer, but unexpectedly, after just two rings, his cold tone was heard: "What is it?"
Hearing his tone, without even addressing me, I was taken aback and couldn’t understand who had provoked him so early in the morning.
"President Gordon, I’m calling to remind you that at three o’clock this afternoon, don’t forget to go to the Civil Affairs Bureau."
"Does it have to be today? Sophie Miller’s situation is not good, I can’t leave." His tone was still indifferent, tinged with impatience.
"Adrian Gordon, it’s just a divorce, how long do you want to drag it out? If you think we can reunite after Sophie Miller dies, I’m telling you, dream on! Be a man, be decisive, and get the divorce over with." I also got angry and spoke bluntly.
Unexpectedly, he ignored me and directly hung up the phone.
Looks like I really need to prepare for litigation and go through legal procedures now.
When I arrived at the company, I immediately asked Cherry to arrange an appointment with a divorce lawyer for me.
At ten in the morning, as I was on a call with the divorce lawyer learning about the divorce litigation process, Cherry knocked and entered: "Ms. Lily, there’s a man outside looking for you, claiming to be your cousin, with the last name Greene."
A cousin with the last name Greene, that would be my aunt’s son – what’s he doing here?
I was puzzled, "Let him in."
I ended the call with the lawyer and looked at the young man entering, who indeed was my aunt’s son, my cousin, Oliver Greene.
"Oliver, why have you come? Is there something wrong?" I stood up to greet him, smiling.
Oliver Greene didn’t look well, and his words were filled with animosity: "Cousin, you’ve already made your family fall apart, and now you want to mess with ours? You’ve been pitiful since childhood, my mom has cared for you, and this is how you repay her?"
This sudden barrage of sarcasm left me completely astonished.
"What do you mean? Did something happen to Aunt?" I asked, confused and concerned.
Oliver Greene spoke in an agitated tone, "Did you borrow money from my mom? Asking for twenty million right off the bat, you really have the nerve!"
I was taken aback, coming to a realization.
Is there a problem with the money Aunt lent me?
"I did borrow money from Aunt, but it wasn’t used, and I returned it to her the other day—has something gone wrong?"
In recent days, to raise money for the auction, I scraped together funds from various sources and even took out a bank loan.
Later, Daniel Carter helped me win the bracelet at the auction, so I didn’t use that money, and over the past few days, I’ve been returning it to my friends and the bank.
The money from Aunt, I also transferred back to her on the night the auction concluded.
"Of course there’s a problem! That money was a public fund my mom embezzled to lend to you, she hid it from my dad, and he only found out today. Even though you’ve returned the money, the implications are serious, my parents had a big fight, smashed things in the living room, and now they’re talking about divorce! Isn’t this because of you?" Oliver Greene was infuriated, accusing loudly.
I was startled and could guess what had happened.
My uncle’s company has had chaotic management in recent years because he brought all his relatives into the company, regardless of their capability, just to feed off it.
A few years ago, my aunt was persuaded by my uncle to leave the company and return to the family.
But because so many of uncle’s relatives were in the company, making the company chaotic, my aunt, worried the company would eventually be hollowed out by these parasites, fought hard to regain control of the company’s finances.
With my aunt in charge, the finances tightened, and those parasites couldn’t easily gain benefits anymore. Naturally, they defamed my aunt in front of uncle, causing the relationship between my aunt and uncle to become increasingly strained.
My guess is that this time my aunt embezzled public funds to help me and was found out by uncle. He finally caught her in a shortcoming—even if there was no actual mistake made, uncle would make a big deal out of it.
If they divorce, my mother’s tragedy will repeat itself on my aunt.
Uncle will surely find a way to press my aunt, making her leave with nothing or burdening her with debts.
Having figured this out, I quickly calmed down.
"Don’t shout, just tell me what’s going on, shouting won’t solve the problem." I soothed Oliver Greene and grabbed my phone, "Calm down first, I’ll call Aunt."
I couldn’t just listen to his one-sided story, I needed to understand it all comprehensively.
I sensed his sudden visit wasn’t just to vent at me, there had to be another motive.
I made the call, and Aunt’s voice was noticeably hoarse, her emotions still unsettled.
"Aunt, Oliver is here with me, I heard you and uncle had a fight over lending me money, and now you’re talking about divorcing?"
Aunt was surprised: "Oliver went to find you?"
"Don’t listen to his nonsense, I can handle it, don’t worry."
I understood Aunt’s earnest intentions; she didn’t want me feeling guilty.
But I was even more worried about her.
"Aunt, uncle’s side has many people with a large network, while you’re outnumbered and overpowered. If you keep even me in the dark, who will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you? Who will help you fight for your interests?"
With my words, the grievance in Aunt’s heart was stirred, and she once again burst into tears.
"That bastard Leonard Greene... he himself made poor decisions, managed poorly, and then brought all those parasites into the company, causing financial deficits. Now it’s blowing up... He blames me, refusing to let go of me borrowing money for you..."
I listened quietly as Aunt recounted the whole matter, and the confusion in my heart was finally cleared up.
It turns out my uncle’s company’s financial chain is broken, now several creditors are pursuing payment, and a bank loan of tens of millions is also due.
"How much funding is needed for the company to get through this crisis?"
Aunt said, "I’m not sure about the specifics. Leonard Greene has been secretly making some investments outside, but it’ll be at least thirty or forty million..."
"Alright, got it, I’ll talk to Oliver."
Just as I was about to hang up, Aunt repeatedly instructed me not to get involved, saying she had prepared for the worst.
But how could I stand by and do nothing?
Over the years, Aunt has treated me like a daughter, with care and love, and Grandma only has this one daughter left.
Back when Mom was bullied by that scumbag, I was still young and powerless.
Now that I’ve grown up and gained capability, I absolutely must seek justice for Aunt, if only to fulfill my mother’s wishes.
Putting down the phone, I looked at Oliver Greene and straightforwardly asked: "You came here to ask me for money, right? Tell me, how much do you want?"
Seeing my straightforwardness, Oliver Greene was clearly surprised, hesitated, and said, "Hmph, at least you have a conscience, my mom hasn’t cared for you in vain."
I couldn’t help but chuckle coldly.
I’ve always been guided by my conscience; I repay kindness tenfold to those who are good to me.
My thorns are only directed towards those who hurt me, like the Miller Family, like Adrian Gordon.
I calculated the money I could gather together and proactively asked: "Is ten million enough?"
"Ten million? Are you joking?" Oliver Greene sneered disdainfully, paused, and said, "At least fifty million is needed to clear bank loans and external debts, to avoid prosecution."
